On the other side of the bridge tomorrow (over in Houghton) will be the Parade of Nations, but this afternoon we find ourselves here in Hancock, passing through the familiar shops and offices. On the left is Family Independence Agency, then St Vinny's, and farther down is the Kaleva, known to serve a few pasties themselves.

And after you pass the big D&N tower (looks like copper windows), there's Gemignani's Restaurant if you're in the mood for Italian.

Can you name the buildings on the right hand side?

Is Finn Pro still there? One of my favorite shops in Hancock!

By Martha Bergh-Lantz, Indiana on Saturday, September 23, 2000 - 12:02 am:

I can't help but remember back to my early elementary school years when I look at this photo. I attended the Copper Harbor one-room school K-8th grades, and one day all of us were in Hancock for a field trip and then went to Kaleva Cafe for lunch. We were almost done eating when Mr. Gagnon (I hope I spelled his name right), a reporter at the time for the Daily Mining Gazette, came into the restaurant. He had done stories on our school before, and recognized us. He bought us all ice cream sundays! Mr. Gagnon, I believe, has passed away now, but I'll never forget his generosity.

I want to thank you, Mr. Hopper for this great website. It makes me homesick, though.

Some-on the right side: Post Office, Superior Bank, Doctor Aldrich's Office, Rudy's, Nutini's and ???

By Kathleen, San Diego CA on Saturday, September 23, 2000 - 01:30 pm:

... and then, Hancock City Hall, Hancock High School, St. Joseph - St. Patrick church, that cool old house with the round turret, Soumi College, Northern Motors, Conways, IGA, a barber shop, Phil's Upholstery, small white church with steeple, Santori's, West End Market, Lazzari's Market...
I walked this route many, many times.

By Paul, Hancock, MI on Saturday, September 23, 2000 - 09:28 pm:

It was cool to see the street I drive every day on the web. Gotta love the UP! Great shot jon! Keep up the good work!

I'd rather go to the Kaleva Cafe for pasty! The Salvation Army Corps. is just around the corner on that block, too. There used to be a small cafe on the next block on the left in the 50s. Can't remember the name. Used to go there for lunch if I had babysitting money, on our lunch hour from Hancock High. No cafeteria in school then, mostly had to walk up the hill.....for miles!!!....to go home and eat. Thanks so much for the memories. Wish I were there.

Forgot to say I like Gemignani's too, I'm just craving pasty right now!

By Roger Somero CA on Sunday, September 24, 2000 - 04:34 am:

The house with the round turret was Leiblein's, the IGA was Sakari's store, Ron's barber shop was next, a tavern was next-don't recall the name-then Ginnette's(sp?)store with Dick's barber shop in the same building. Does anyone remember the old school at HCH-by the church-right side, and the Catholic school on the left side of the church? I also went to the little cafe for coffee, but can't remember the name.

By AZ on Monday, September 25, 2000 - 12:30 am:

Reading all these messages is making me hungry for a pasty right now too, like Ellen in Fl! You sure have a great site here. We are in AZ and I
sit here and "dream" of being back in the Copper Country!!

By RJW MI on Monday, September 25, 2000 - 04:21 pm:

Where Gemignani's is now there was a little coffee shop run by -------Beiring, But I can't remember the name of it.

By Kathleen, San Diego CA on Monday, September 25, 2000 - 10:18 pm:

The Coral Shop

By R Somero on Tuesday, September 26, 2000 - 02:15 am:

The Coral Shop-thank you.

Somewhere in these blocks a long time ago (when I was very young), didn't there also used to be a cafe called the Coffee Cup Cafe, which burned down? My favorite memory of the Kaleva is that when we were little, and my mother got paid, she would take us there for a treat and I would always like to get custard pie and chocolate milk. (I still love custard pie, but hardly ever see it offered anywhere.) However, don't get me wrong - ain't nothing better than pasties, whether from the Kaleva or Suomi Restaurant or Connie's Kitchen up north!!!

By R Somero CA on Wednesday, September 27, 2000 - 03:02 am:

The Koffee Kup(I sort of remember K instead of C) was on the left side of Quincy St. between the Dime store and Coast to Coast hardware. They added a lounge to the basement in later years. It burned down about 1968-1970.

I can't wait to live here! Less than five more years!

The Coffee Cup changed from a coffee shop to a lounge, it was located next to Dr Janus office. The band that played in the lounge was The Silver Tones, Stan Roberts played lead guitar. Remember the dances in the Red Owl parking lot.

By Lucy, Texas on Thursday, September 28, 2000 - 12:38 am:

Thanks for the notes about the Coffee Cup (or Koffee Kup). Glad to know it wasn't just in my imagination. Mention of the Red Owl brings back a lot of memories too. Things sure do change over the years, don't they? It's strange to look at this picture and realize how many things used to be something else, like Neil's Cab Co. and Woolworth's and Kirkish's, etc.

Any of the old 'Duck' crowd out there?

By Kathleen, San Diego CA on Thursday, September 28, 2000 - 01:04 pm:

Roger, I remember my PARENTS going out for an evening and stopping at the 'Duck' (aka Golden Pheasant)! I don't know what it's name is now, but locals still call it the 'Duck'.

By R Somero CA on Friday, September 29, 2000 - 02:56 am:

Thank you, Kathleen. I hear it's called Uphill 41 or something like that.

By Sue Scalf, Alabama on Sunday, October 1, 2000 - 05:11 pm:

Dr. Leonard Aldrich delivered my daughter at St. Joseph's Hospital in l958. There was a bar or lounge on Quincy Street called Rudi's. I worked in the Woolworth store two weeks before Christmas in l957. I was the only employee with a Southern accent. Also I lived at 205 Quincy Street, upstairs over Joffee's. I could look right through the picture window of my apartment and read that sign that says Kaleva cafe. The Coffee Cup had wonderful pasties, but they didn't offer them every day. I went to Michigan Tech while my husband was there with the Air Force ROTC department. I would love to visit again.

My Great Grandfather, Henry Sakari owned the Sakari Store in Hancock. Does anyone have any memories of it and or him or his sons Carl, and Hjalmer who also worked in the store ?

By Mike Hauswirth |Negaunee,MI| on Thursday, September 25, 2003 - 11:48 pm:

My Grandmother and Grandfather used to go to the 'Duck' (Golden Pheasent) when it was a club. I hear there was a fire or something. I live in Negaunee and play in a band that plays there once in a great while (Uncle Ugly). I have been in the basement of the now 'Uphill41' and you can see evidence of a fire. Man, the Red Owl...my Parents used to shop there and I too. May I just say, going through this site really brought back memories...and I thank you for that. I am sending this site to all my long lost Copper Country buds!

By Michael, Houghton on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 - 12:30 pm:

Is anyone here old enough to remember a Saloon owned by my Great Grandfathers younger brother, Matt (Matti) Mathew Jestila located where the Salvation Army building is in Hancock now at 301 Quincy? Supposedly closed down at the end of W.W.I with the adoption of prohibition.
