Lift bridge resurfacing has resumed for the fall. As a result, two of the four Houghton-Hancock bridge lanes are closed. This link may give you a glimpse of the construction. The shot above was one of the more pleasant side effects of traffic delays. I've passed this garden literally thousands of times and rarely ever had the privilege of giving it a closer look.

Every time I come to Hougton (which isn't as much as I would like) I stop and look at this statue. My great grandfather was a miner in the Quincy Mine. I never met him, but this statue always makes me think of him.

Thank you for posting it.

Hmmm... every time I used to pass by this miner, he seemed to have just been to Burger King, and picked up a crown while he was there! Or was that just our (MTU'ers) imaginations gone mad??

Is that a Norwegian flag in the background and if so does anyone know why?

By mike on Thursday, September 14, 2000 - 12:38 pm:

Regarding the flag of Norway shown in the picture, Michigan Tech holds a "Parade of Nations" early each fall after school starts up. The main streets of Houghton (both of them) are lined with flags from all over the world and the internatinoal students usually march bearing their own flags. In this case, given the Scandinavian influence of the region, this particualar flag is only outnumbered by the Finnish flag!

My Great Grandfather, Grandfather and several uncles all worked in the mines...as I look at this picture I glance over at the helmet and lunch pail I have on my shelf...this picture is what the Copper Country means to me. I see my relatives on their way home after another shift. Thanks for keeping our memories alive on a daily basis!!! Memories are just a click away thanks to you!
