The best sunsets look good in both directions. Like Jonathan's photo yesterday of the pine forest illuminated by the last light of day, here I present both views. I prefer the easterly view of the pebbles. If I were more successful at slowing down a little and enjoying nature for itself
rather than recording it, I would have looked for agates among those stones.

Those pictures bring back the joys of our August vacation! What beauty!

I can't believe the clarity of the pictures, particularly the one of the pebbles and woods in the background which were both in focus. Is that called depth of field? I am looking at digital cameras with plans to buy one soon and am so impressed with these pictures. What camera do you use and is it difficult to use for someone who is not a photographer?

I use an Olympus C2500L which gives me a choice of
two "f-stops", f2.8 and f5.6. I usually use f5.6
to maximize depth of field. The photo of the
pebbles was taken with a wide angle lens.
Sometimes I'll sharpen a photo a bit usine a
sharpening filter in Photoshop.

So, Dan, is your Olympus C2500L a digital camera?

I often see questions in the cam notes from inspired visitors asking about camera equipment. I would like to recommend a site that I used extensively when shopping for my own camera last spring: http://www.dpreview.com. This is an exhaustive independent site which catalogues information on practically all the digital cameras on the market. The best feature is a side-by-side comparison option.
I wound up getting an Olympus C2020Z. I have been very very happy with it. You can see some of the results at www.jalapenodesign.com and www.gardenparkhouse.com (just went live last week).
Congrats to Dan U. and yesterday's guest photographer for a smashing set of photos. Makes me wish I could get out of Chicago more often...

When I saw yesterday's picture of the pine trees, I made it my wallpaper, changing it from another magnificent, PastyCam picture earlier this year. Now today's picture left me grappling with decision making...the pine trees, the sunset, the rocks? The rocks won out for today, but I wish I could have them all!! The photography is soooo..beautiful! Thanks for my daily inspiration.

What can you say...the sunset, the agate beach, pine trees, encaputuring clouds, and all the colors, being gentlty serenaded by the Blue Gem...Superior. Thats the Upper Pennisula.

I'm homesick. I lived in the U.P. as a boy in the 1950's, but I still get back every summer for vacation. Exactly what beach is this; looks like Five Mile Point.

One of the things I enjoy about this site is the ability to make the various photos into wallpaper -- providing me with a window to the UP while I'm at my computer :-)

Dan - you ARE the man. You are the consummate photographer for the UP. No one captures its essence like you do, and you keep outdoing yourself. Like some of the comments above, I get both homesick and indecisive on which photo to use as my wallpaper! I'm a natural born Yooper transplanted to Ohio, but I do get up there every few years for vacation/reunion, including July and August of 2000. Thanks Dan, for keeping me "home."

These two pictures made my heart go flip-flop! I was just there in August, and these bring back such memories of the beauty in the U.P! Every time I go there, I bring back interestingly colored and textured rocks from Lake Superior, and add to my "rock jar" in front of the fireplace. I've never seen such beauty in rocks as those found there. The rock beach photo is exquisite, and I commend you for your talent, and perception!

Both of my daughters love to throw rocks into the water. They would be in seventh heaven in the first photograph!

about the location of the photographs, they were
taken in downtown Silver City near the Porcupine
Mountains. As president-for life of the Porcupine
Mts Chamber, I invite everyone to visit this
scenic part of the UP.

The last few days cam pics will convince any non-believer that a picture is worth a thousand words. You can be transported miles with a vision.
But maybe you have to experience it once, at first, for yourself, eh? Thanks for a 600 mile trip condensed for me, who can't make the trip until at least spring. Keep 'em coming Pasty cam. I believe we'd all go thru withdrawls without you.

Love the picture with the rocks...the only place you can find them like that is near Silver City and in Union Bay. I have another picture of rocks on the beach with the sunset(Dan's, natch)...that I see every a.m. when I awake and it warms the heart! I would love to get a copy of the picture at the beginning of the Pastycam...the one from outer space of the U.P. That is a beauty!! Anyone know how to get it????

These pictures make me homesick as well. I grew up in Copper Harbor, and now live in northern Indiana. I miss the water and the trees! These pictures are so beautiful and capture the scene in a way that does a Lake Superior sunset justice. Many sunset pictures don't! It was a joy to see these beauties...thanks for sharing them!
