Beach fire at sunset

By
Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, August 27, 2000 - 01:35 pm:

Had just crossed the dunes next to Garden City Creek, when I came upon this scene of several generations of beach lovers. They had been roasting marshmallows, but now turned their chairs around to enjoy the final moments of the sun's descent into Lake Superior.

The sight reminded me of a favorite morning somewhere back there in the Pasty Cam archives, which Jonathan had captured on Bumbletown Hill. That day the same sun was rising, not through the glassy surface of the Lake, but a blanket of fog shrouding Ahmeek, Mohawk and the Cliffs:

Charlie,

Man, this particular picture sure does make me homesick! Just love that shot of the lake and the sunset, with the fire burning on the beach. Awesome!

Boy does this picture bring back memories of a bunch of us biking to Eagle River from Mohawk as teenagers and building a bonfire and roasting marshmallows and hotdogs!

Scenes like these bring back my memories of growing up on the North Shore of the Lake. But, I enjoy the South Shore now. The sunsets are important now for my family because my father, who I believe has Lake Superior water in his veins, is dying of cancer. This will be another picture for his wall of his room, like the PastyCam of Wednesday before last. Thanks you for the pictures.

Beautiful picture! Reminds me of the great times we had at Five Mile Point on the beach of the cottage there. Many good times spent there. Thanks for the great site.

Interesting how everyone has memories of bonfires on Lake Superior. Ours were at Big Traverse and a big part of the summer. I really feel sorry for anyone growing up anywhere else. The U.P. was the perfect place.

Summers in the UP are the best, and this picture tells you why. Oh how I long for those warm days on the shore of "The Big Lake." Love your photo!

Does anyone out there have a picture of 5-mile point taken from on the lake from a boat? Would love to have for my desk-top.

By Barb, Texas on Monday, August 28, 2000 - 10:06 pm:

Just returned to Texas from the UP and already miss the sunsets! Not to mention that the 108 degrees today was certainly a change from last week in Eagle Harbor!

You sure know how to make a grown person cry!

I have been religiously checking this site every day for some time now to get my daily "fix" of home.

As a native "yooper" living in Houston, TX for the past 6 years I have come to realize what a true gift it was to be able to grow up in the U.P. and take shots like this for granted! Keep up the great work...it makes Texas bearable!

How many nights at 5 mile point, Tamarack Waterworks and Bete Gris......Sad to think
that all these locales are being commercially developed. Great to remember how in the late 30's we used to picnic every Sunday.

Even the Blue Ridge Mountains don't have anything on stuff like this. I grew up in Gladstone and lived a block from Lake Michigan. Waking up every morning to views like this was amazing. Keep up the good work.
