In the kitchen at Gitche Gumee

By
Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, August 17, 2000 - 05:37 pm:

Summertime in the U.P. brings a lot of vacationers... and a lot of seasonal workers to make their stay here a pleasant one. Sam Utecht and Kelly Bjorkman are among the crew this year at Gitche Gumee, where a many folks spend their vacation during the "family weeks".

I happened by the Dining Hall in Eagle River just as Sam was demonstrating his handiwork. Seeing the Pasty Cam poised for a shot, Kelly leaned in to join him in this "Glimpse of life in the U.P."

The watermelon was sweet :o)

This shot took me back to the days in the early 60's when I spent my summers working in the kitchen at Presbytery Point in Michigamee. Don't check any of my spelling, please.

Sure miss those Thursday Gitche Gumee picnics! Getting back to family camp with the kids is high on my wish list of things to do. Many fond memories of camping and staffing at that dear place.

This picture brings back fond memories or working in the kitchen at Gitche Gumee. Although I've never cooked (I think there's a conspiracy against me to make sure I DON'T cook)I've done dishes many, many times and that was quite fun. Somebody's gotta do it!

In the mid 60's I spent three weeks at a summer camp named Camp Ketchewa (sp?) on Lake Michagamee. Is this the same place?

No, Doug, this is Gitche Gumee in Eagle River.
