Dedicated to the memory of:

Deloris "Lori" Marsy
Jan (Erickson) Morris
Todd Wiinamaki
Tom Ruppe
Bob Stenroos
Annabelle Lynch
Doris Westergaard

...and, as always, you are welcome to add to our memorial list.

We were saddened earlier this month to learn of Jan Morris' passing. I had spoken with her just a few days before. She had been a staff member at Still Waters a few years back, and often visited the home. We will remember her smile.

Another year is history. On this day, two other friends come to mind. Above the fireplace in our home here in Eagle River is a rustic clock given to my wife and I over 25 years ago by Carl Lerke, shortly before he was killed in an accident on New Year's Eve. And an old friend, Heine Ollila, has been remembered fondly in our home this holiday season. We were given a recording of Heine and Steve Jones, the songs they used to play at the Hut in Kearsarge. Their music certainly brings back memories. Heine passed away on New Year's Day 1998.

May 2002 bring peace, safety, and blessings to you and your family.

Tom Mottonen (Uncle Tom)..passed away this past summer. He lefted behind so many people who loved him and will miss him. He was with me in my deer stand this past deer season when I came home to the UP for my annual hunt. In the spirit of the fond memories off all the good times I had growing up in the UP with my Uncle Tom....

Our Second mother, Doris Westergaard, 87, left on her new adventure 12/15/01. She loved Eagle Harbor, sunsets at Sand Bay, watching for ore boats, the Shoreline Motel, and the meals at the Eagle Harbor Inn. She will always be in our lives.

Thank you Brad for posting my mom's name. I would like to add the name of Irene Fosness who also passed away this month. In honor of my mom (Lori Marsy)and Irene Fosness I would like to post this Native American Prayer. "I give you this one thought to keep - I am with you still - I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened gain, I am the gentle autum rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone - I am with you still - in each new dawn." Amen.

Jean Petermann Zimmer, of Eagle River and Laurium, passed away December 29, 2001. The daughter of Phil and Myrna Petermann, in 1939 Jean was the first woman to earn a degree in Geology from the Michigan College of Mining & Technology.

Jean was a lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula. During the 1950s and early 1960s, she lived in Sault Ste. Marie with her first husband, the late Ernie Kemp, Professor of Geology at Lake Superior State University. She returned to Houghton in 1965, where she served as Curator and Director of the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech until her retirement in 1986.

After retiring, she married Paul Zimmer, MTU '40, and lived in her family homes in Laurium and Eagle River. From childhood Jean had a reverence for nature and wildlife, and dearly loved the Keeweenaw. Her warm and kind spirit brought light to the lives of all who knew her.
