I was reviewing the list of towns and cities around the country which received pasties from Pasty Central this month - the most ever for any single month. There seemed to be a lot of orders from one particular area which I hadn't noticed much in the past. By a remarkable coincidence, my inbox contained a shot from this area from Thomas Simpson (who is usually shooting the eastern U.P. for the Pasty Cam.)

Kinda looks like a typical street in Laurium, doesn't it? Or even the neighborhood on the hill in Marquette... Guess again...

It's Grand Rapids, Michigan.

As a former Grand Rapids, MI resident(1954-7), I can attest to the love for pasties down dere--well at least in our family, eh(whose patriarch grew up in Calumet).
This looks like some of the same classic 1900-1940's architecture that built the first ring of metropolitan suburbs in the Upper Midwest.
Keep up the great pictures!

To KMR WI. . .glad to have heard from you. I, too, check this site (nearly) every day. It's a taste of home! Hope E-Bird and all the Little D's were well this Christmas. Do you drive through Oshkosh on your way to the Keweenaw? Give us a call next time.

Yes, Grand Rapids is looking a lot like the UP lately! 36" since Sunday... Our house was on the list as we opened a box of pasties on Christmas morning! Thank you, Pasty Central! I'm in GR right now, but heading back to Tech in a few weeks and I can't wait! I check the pasty cam every day to see what I'm missing!

Yep, Grand Rapids is getting their typical snow fall for this time of the year. I live 2 hours west of them and we only have an inch.... if that! My friend lives in Holland and as of yesterday says it's only stopped snowing "for an hour since Christmas Eve"... looks like it's time for the snow mobiles to get around town on.

Way to go Thomas! One of my favorite Pasty Cam photographers.

Yo Tom, Looks alot like Union Ave. SE. Is it?

By Thomas Simpson, MI on Friday, December 28, 2001 - 07:18 pm:

Nope, not Union Ave. SE but very close to Union Ave. NE.

I am in the UP right now visiting family, and GR looks very much like up here right now. We will be going back to the Detroit area soon. I hope it does not look like that down there. It will be a big mess if it does. They can not drive like us Yoopers:)

You know, I looked at this picture, and thought it looked like the street I grew up on in Detroit. Then when you said it was Grand Rapids, I was even more surprised. I knew it looked familiar. I did my first year of teaching in Grand Rapids, sixth grade, 1960-61 at Buchanan Elementary School! That was a wonderful town, wonderful people. I was always in the snowbank, however from all the snow. I didn't know how to drive too well in snow in those days. Yup, that's what it looked like all winter! Except that often the snow was a lot higher on the street side of the car after the snowplow came by and snowed in your car.

By Betty - Sun City, AZ on Saturday, December 29, 2001 - 11:40 pm:

Alice, I grew up in Royal Oak, MI and when I saw the picture, I thought it was from there. Funny how we all think it looks like where we lived. But it is interesting. I was born in Mohawk, and that day, the snow was up to the second floor bedroom window. Now we are in AZ and enjoying not having to 'shovel' that nice 'white stuff'.....

By Lyndelle Chiomenti, Frederick, MD on Sunday, December 30, 2001 - 06:01 pm:

All right, just down the road from GR is my hometown, Holland, and this pix sure is making me homesick. If we get precip in Maryland for Christmas, it's rain. You know the song, "I'm dreaming of a wet Christmas!" (If you pronounce "wet" with a real southern accent, it almost sounds like "white.") All you yoopers and trolls alike, enjoy it for me!

By jan on Monday, December 31, 2001 - 05:08 pm:

Okay---what street is it?

By Pining Yooper in TrollLand on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 - 10:28 am:

To me it looks like around the Benjamin SE area...
East of Eastern SE, just about anywhere, and either side of Wealthy SE. That area seems to typify the style of home.

Then again, there's the streets either side of Plainfield Avenue NE, North of Leonard and South of Three Mile Road; but I suppose it's in the Heartside area?

But if the truth were known....I'd rather be anyplace in Marquette/Alger/Keweenaw.

Enjoyed the pasties! Too bad they don't multiply in my refrigerator the way leftovers do!

By Sarah O'Malley, Utica, Michigan on Sunday, January 6, 2002 - 09:22 pm:

Looks like Traverse City to me!! :o)
