Not only did snow arrive in abundance today in Calumet, but so did pasty orders. Some kind of record today, as Pasty Central appeared in the Detroit Free Press annual food gift guide. We are grateful to the folks at the Freep for also bringing the Pasty Central story to folks all over the country, through their features which make it to the wire services.

The pasties leave snowy Calumet these days by way of a Fedex truck, and there's an interesting feature we've added to our order process. After your package is on its way, you will be automatically emailed the TRACKING NUMBER of your package. This way you can follow the progress of your delivery over at www.fedex.com. If your pasty order is a gift, you'll be able to verify the time it arrived!

I often think of the copper miners who lived 50 to 100+ years ago on streets like the one above (though the houses have changed). Wouldn't they be amazed to see how far pasties have come!

Lunchtime

I can remember years ago, jack rabbit hunting with my dad and older brother in northern lower Michigan....My mom made pasties for us to take with us and we'd always stick one in our pocket in the morning before going out.....had lunch sitting on a stump by a stream....pleasant memories, great lunch!!

Thanks for the "lunchtime" shot, Charlie.
Just off the cuff here--Anybody remember an old Houghton diner near the "Dog House" called simply "Lunch"?
I remember eating there a few times in the early 1970's. It was a neat old Mom and Pop place that had somehow hung on downtown(like Jerry's Bar) from an earlier era.
Ahh, don't get me started...

Thanks for the nice shot of "home," Alicia! This is truly just down the road from my house, and looks at one of my favorite houses in the world -- nice peek from your strawberry patch. Nice to look through your eyes at what mine are missing....

Last Friday was a wonderful day to be back there! 50 degrees and no snow that late in Nov. Nice to see home again. Signed the guest book at Stillwaters on Sat. Didn't get to meet you people-maybe next time.

Same thing with me R.Somero, even tried to get a calendar but the lady couldn't find them so I guess I will have to order some pasties and get my calendar too.... only difference is I wish I was still UP there !

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 06:30 am:

Sam,

I think you stopped by just before the calendars arrived. Sorry I missed your visit, and Mr. Somero as well. This time of year is unbelievably busy, so I'm in and out a lot. Maybe next time :o)

Thank you kindly for the pictures posted on your web site today. They brought back fond, tearful memories.
I am the eldest grandson of my grandfather John P. and Mary Downey. They came from Ireland to Calumet before turn of the 20 th century. He worked as a miner at the C & H in Calumet.
Our large family ranks from that era in the U.P are now growing very thin.
My fond memories of living with them & my beloved grandparents Lucien S. Chabot Family at Lake Linden before WW2 are profoundly joy-filled, proud & strong.
May God continue to bless America with peace in this millennium. John Bernard Chabot & Family in Shingle Springs CA.

Is that a handicap walk or is it one of the many winter walks put up so the home owners don't have to shovel so much snow? Charlie how about a shot of one of these walks with the high snow banks in February when the snow banks are so high.

Hey, Alicia - do you live on Rockhouse? The boardwalk in the picture leads to what used to be my front door (#1140). It's a much nicer boardwalk than we had, though. My folks sold the place about two years ago to move down to troll land where Dad grew up. The winters were getting to hard on him, having to clear all that snow.

By Alicia, Michigan on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 11:53 am:

Hi Dawn, I was your parents neighbor. They lived next door to me. RJW that is a handicap walk next door, makes it easier for the busdriver when he drops the children off.
Hi Candy! Nice to hear from you.

~WoW~ Looks great...Your making me homesick !!!!! Looks like its beging to look alot like Christmas!

What a great nostalgia trip, Alicia! Thanks, Charlie, for including this picture of "our" front yard and the little tree we planted. As we look at green grass and the last of our fall flowers, it's hard to think of snow scoops and snow blowers and winter coats.

Love the pic!
I know exactly where that is too.....making me very homesick for Calumet/Laurium!
Its cloudy and 43 degrees here in East Lansing...Hope to see some of the white stuff here sometime soon too!

A nice shot of my great Uncle Bill Thielman's old house, the angled house across the street. It was built in the early 50's and was one of the first houses with a heated cement slab.

3-1/2 weeks and we will be in gods country.
