As administrator at Still Waters in Calumet, I've come to know many area residents, and learn a little of their background and family history. Before he passed away in 1998, Rudy Bylkas shared with me his love of photography and love of the Keweenaw. I have several of his photographs which capture the 40's and 50's in black and white. Here is his son, who passed away some years before Rudy, during one of their happy times exploring the shore of Lake Superior.

Rudy lived in Centennial Heights for many years with his wife Erma. I'm curious if any of our regular Pasty Cammers remember them?

Massie: Did the Bylkas family run a general store at one time in Centennial Heights?

Any relation to Ken or Carl Bylkas who were sons of Andrew and lived on a farm in the Bootjack area?
Ken was my uncle and he and his wife Lydia(Wittaniemi) ran the old DX gas station and grocery store in the 1950's, which was across the street from the farm.

this pic shows the contrast of how things change ...but then again some things seem to stay the same... Looking at that beachfront..it looks the same as it does today...What beauty and a blessing it is to call the U.P. Home~
