This week we have had reports of the northern lights being visible even in the deep south. There is a neat website devoted to this phenomenon at SpaceWeather.com, telling of an Auroral blast on the Sun this past Sunday, which led to the current ionospheric storm.

There was a different kind of storm here in Calumet yesterday, arriving via the Internet. It was a flood of pasty orders as a result of the Detroit Free Press article entitled "The U.P. Clicks". Heather Newman focused on the Upper Peninsula and how technology is affecting our lives, mentioning Pasty Central along the way. When photographer Al Kamuda was here recently, he clicked this shot, which the Free Press published with the article:

We go camping on the U.P. every couple of years (Hurricane River, Copper Harbor, etc.) and enjoy tooling around Keweenaw County, but I've yet to see the Northern Lights. This Virginia native is looking forward to that first time....and I'm told I'll never forget it. Thank you for posting such incredible pictures of this phenomenon. And let me add, that when we head North, pasties at Toni's in Laurium are the best, next to pasty.com, of course!

We saw the red aurora best on Monday night, Nov 5. Nov 6--much less. -- Porter County, Indiana (NW corner) What a treat!

We had a gorgeous showing of the Northern Lights here in Lansing on Monday night. I was hoping someone had caught the lights up in the Keweenaw. Great job! There's supposed to be another good display tonight. Let's hope so!

Interesting as it was...But what was really interesting here in the Toledo area Monday night was the "crawl"(The little ticker tape thing that scrolls across the bottom of your TV screen) on NBC 24...
It was a message saying something to the effect that the reddish glow in the north sky was not cause for panic, it was just the northern lites.
Don't be alarmed.

We saw the aurora on Nov. 5 way down here on Hilton Head Island! That was the first time in my life, but hopefully not the last!

saw it in Dubuque Iowa on Monday night. Thought it was the city lights but it was too streaky!

I thought it was neat that my son who lives in Delano, MN called to alert me to look at the Northern Lights. I have never seen them red before. Awsome.

The Northern Lights (very red) were seen as far South as Knoxville, Tennessee, shortly before World War II. People thought the world was coming to an end.

This summer we saw the red Northern Lights in Tucson, Arizona. Very erie and beautiful over the mountains with coyotes howling nearby.

The local radio advised yesterday the possiblity of seeing them, I was so excited! I kept a watch for them through out the night and early morning hours, Did not see them. :( I did see some great shooting stars though. :)

I sat on a swing in the Lake Linden park and watched those red lites swirling with the green. Looking straight up above me, it was like being in the middle of a giant flower that was budding open. The swirling colors looked like petals unfolding. Gorgeous. Outstanding photo!!!

Wish I could have seen this. You people are sure lucky to see them. In all the years I have lived here I have only seen them once. Makes me homesick for the UP.

Looked for them over Saginaw Bay last night, but no go. Congrats on the great article in the Free Press.

The first time I saw the lights was at midnight of my 17th birthday. A group of us staff from Bay Cliff Health Camp were camping out by the black rocks in Big Bay. We were down on the rocks with a camp fire going. They sang to me at midnight, then the lights came out for a very long show! I was hooked on the yoop from that momemt on. It has been such a treat to share the lights with my kids. We still vacation in the Big Bay area every year. We always get at least one showing. Thank you for this picture.

Well, I just can't believe it. I MISSED seeing the beautiful northern lights here in my hometown of Monroe (south of Detroit, near the Ohio border) because I was tired from driving home (11 hours) from--where else--Houghton!!! Yaah!!! Was just up last weekend to visit my sons (MTU students) and enjoy the beauty of the Brockway. I'm sure we'll get to enjoy both again soon! Thanks for the wonderful photos you share. We "downstaters" or "trolls" really appreciate it.

Saw nothing as usual. ALWAYS cloudy in Seattle when there is a flare/aurora. The next evening it was perfectly clear! Arrrggghh!!!! :-(
