There are 3 kinds of pictures I've found extremely hard to take: the moon at night, the northern lights, and a rainbow. 2 out of 3 have come our way this week, with Dan Urbanski's shot on Tuesday, and today's view from Sharon Smith.

These have been delightful days at the Pasty Cam, and a tough choice to determine the WOW (wallpaper of the week). But I must admit, my new wallpaper is John Olson's portrait of Tahquamenon Falls from this past Monday.

Thanks to all the contributors to these pages who make it so much fun to explore just a little bit more of the U.P. every day.

What a cool picture. I remember one time, probably a decade ago, a double rainbow, with the end of one side in the Lake Linden park. What a site. Rainbows, like the Northern Lights, put me in awe everytime!

There must be leprechans living in those 3 buildings across the lake, for there's where the rainbow ends. Although I think they already know where their "pot-o-gold" exists!

By Sharon on Saturday, October 27, 2001 - 01:21 pm:

Doug, only if they're Finnish leprechauns.

The Irish leprechauns and Finnish menninkäinens dwell in harmony together there where the rainbow ends. As always, fantastic photography!

Just absolutely beautiful! I believe the rainbow ends at the buildings where the Isle Royale Queen docks? A lovely shot, Sharon!

Why we love Michigan......

A man in Topeka, Kansas, decided to write a book about churches around
the country. He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working
east from there. He went to a very large church and began taking
photographs, etc. He spots a golden telephone on a wall and is intrigued
with a sign which reads "$10,000 a minute." Seeking out the pastor he
asks about the phone and the sign. The pastor answers
that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he
pays the price he can talk directly to God. He thanks the pastor and
continues on his way.

As he continues to visit churches in Seattle, Austin,
Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and around the United States, he
finds more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each
pastor. Finally, he arrives in Michigan.

Upon entering a church in Munising Michigan, behold,
he sees the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign reads
"Calls: 25 cents."
Fascinated, he requests to talk to the pastor.
"Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I
have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct
line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches
the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 25 cents a call.
Why?"

The pastor, smiling benignly, replies, "Son, you're in
Michigan's upper peninsula now, and it's a local call."

But for a Pasty Cam watermark(sorry Charlie), we would easily see all 3 of what is the branching Halloween essence of this picture's unique genius!

Charlie, I like the Pasty Cam watermark. Having a little reminder of the UP down here in TX is kinda nice. Please don't remove it.
