This photo may be of interest to some of the ole' timers out there. It's the Quincy locomotive train wreck back in the 30's, probably '38 or so. It happened on the Quincy track leading to Mason, just above Dollar Bay. Apparently a washout took out a small bridge. There was one fatality.

Don't remember, 'cause that was before even I was born, but another fascinating piece of history from the shoebox. Keep digging in those boxes, Yoopers and former Yoopers.

When I was going through the Fr. Herman Page collection at the MTU archives a couple months ago, there were a few blurry pictures of the same wreck. Nice shot! The locomotive appears to be the #5 which still sits atop Quincy Hill behind the #2 hoist.

It is Q&TL Number 5! My grandfather, Joe Schneiderhan was the engineer. He was killed when steam got to his lungs. The fireman jumped to safety. The bank let go after the engine and tender passed over, then they were drawn backwards. For years the ore cars lay in the ravine below at the wreck site. The engine was put back in service. My relatives in Ripley have told me stories of hitching rides, as kids, to Torch Lake with my grandfather. He would tell them what time he would coming back on the return trip so they could get home!

There was supposedly a train wreck around 1930 in Quincy, MA. Does anyone have any details? My father saw the wreck from a bridge while on a field trip. Ironically, the engineer, Herbert Tripp, his uncle was killed. I am trying to find additional details (date, photos).

Dave.....I guess you ment Quincy, Ma.....we're Quincy, Mi...however, this area was financed by the monied men from your Quincy. When copper was discoved in this area in the mid-1800s it brought the eastern establishment to the "wilderness" to finance the mining operations.....many of our forefathers came to this area, from all over the world to work the mines and smelters of the region.....the real money went east to your Quincy....but we were left a "rich" heritage too.
