By Ellie, San Diego, CA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 11:27 am:

I've been waiting to see that. We were in the UP 2 weeks ago & very litle color.

By Cousin Jack on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 12:02 pm:

By DAJ on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 12:24 pm:

Looks like a WOW to me!

By PJK @ SWMichigan on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 01:43 pm:

Had planned to head back up to view the color until we read the S N O W forecast, and changed our minds----Thanks for bringing the UP color to those of us who can't get back to see it ourself.

By Kelly and Paul, flat rock MI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 02:14 pm:

Same here PJK...My husband and I were also planning on going up next week for a few days...But driving in the first snow of the year is always a "experience"sliding on the slushy stuff...I dont mind driving in the powder and big flakes But the first snow..Nah we dicided against it too a little too !
So thanks for the picture of the colors and we will see the U.P. this Christmas !

By Von, Huntington Beach, CA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 02:34 pm:

WOW..., WOW! WOOOOOW! California doesn't get anything like this... but y'al don't get to surf at christmas either. Breathtaking simply breathtaking!

By Linda ,CA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 02:45 pm:

Wow!! I miss New England more than ever!!!

By Shawn,Detroit on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 03:06 pm:

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a sight to see!!! Nothing like that here in my concrete jungle a few trees here and there but NOTHING compares at all to the U.P. of MICHIGAN!

By Paul & Shirley Barrette Kenosha WI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 03:48 pm:

What a beautiful sight! You never know how much you miss something until after your gone from the area and see something as beautiful as this again. My wife and I have been making it a habit of making it to DA UP to see the color during their PEAK. She is a city girl and still she can't see enough of the beautiful colors. Sadly to say we missed them this year but we will make it again next year.

By John, Chicago on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 03:55 pm:

I was up there a little over two weeks ago hoping to have a scene like this, but was greatly disappointed. Just an incredible shot!!

By Carey,Milford MI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 03:59 pm:

I was there around the 25th of September and I thought it would have been near peak, It seems the leaves took longer to hit that peak time this year.
I remember a few years when the leaves were already starting to turn in August and when that happens you know oyu are in for a BAD winter, So maybe this year will be a little lighter on the snow (WISHFUL THINKING)

By karen, sunrise side of MI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 04:34 pm:

Actually Von, we can't surf at anytime of the year. Thats why God gave us the UP.

By DMac/Lake Linden on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 04:57 pm:

I think the "worm invasion" caused this late color burst. They ate the first leaves, and the trees re-budded and re-grew....Thus making the fall colors later than usual. It is just gorgeous U.P. here!

By Michele M. LL MI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 05:52 pm:

though there are many great places to see colors in the U.P. Ontonagon county has many breathtaking panoramic views like this. It was one of my favorite sights when I used to work in the Calidonia Mine in Mass City. WOW, what a great reminder.

By Dennis in Duluth on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 07:03 pm:

I was just in the Porkies Monday and it already feels like I've been gone too long. On Saturday, I saw someone Superior-surfing in the snow and wind at Marquette.

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 07:49 pm:

I have been taking fall pictures for many and many a year, both in the Yoop and here in WI. This picture tops anything I could have dreamed of. I have some oldies from Brockway that I thought were pretty spectacular, but I don't think I have ever been treated to the spectacular display in your picture.

By Jeff in Bremerton, WA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 08:01 pm:

Thanks, eh! It’s beautiful. One day a year - always in the fall, my Mom used to pull us kids out of school (we lived in Escanaba), and we’d ride around our area of the UP, and take what she called a “color tour”. We always looked forward to it, and this picture brings back the memories! Thanks again.

By TC Sterling Heights on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 09:19 pm:

It is really great to see some U.P color, even though I'm not there to see it myself

By Carol, Illinois on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 10:04 pm:

Wow is that a color show? Wish I could be up there to see it in person. Nothing like that in central Illinois.

By Candy Goulette, CA on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 10:22 pm:

Sacramento, CA, has nothing like this, either, Von -- and I miss home during color season like no other! (I don't, however, miss the snow so early in October -- I like the warm days and cool nights here.) Keep 'em coming, Charlie -- pasty.com lifts a lot of spirits on a daily basis.

By PMS, MI on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 11:23 pm:

God graced his colors on us; this is tranquility!

By DMK, TN on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 12:13 am:

WOW what a truly awesome view. Spectacular!

By Earl Kangas, Palmdale, CA on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 03:21 am:

That's the U.P. I remember and miss. One thing the pics can't convey is the wonderful smell of autumn in the U.P.

By Ken A. Wisconsin on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 06:08 am:

Uncle! You win.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 06:33 am:

Regular Pasty Cam visitors noted on Monday that Ken A. from Wisconsin challenged the U.P. to a color duel. Ken Mell from Illinois volleyed back with this shot from the Porkies. Looks like we have a winner :o)

By Matt, Metro Detroit on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 08:18 am:

WOW!!!!!!!!!

The only thing green about this picture is me turning green w/ envy!!

Breathtaking!

Here's excellent proof that this earth, our lives, are no accident--The Lord has richly blessed each one of us.

By Dave, Il on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 08:55 am:

Thank You Charlie this is a BIG WOW!!!!!!!

By YWB/ Richmond. on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 09:51 am:

I vote for WOW!!!!!
I agree with Matt. Not only is it boring in lower MI, it is raining so much that you can't enjoy the little bit of color we get. Thank you for the picture.

By ShawnR, MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 10:16 am:

So, so, soooo pretty!!!! Thanks Ken M and Charlie.

I vote for WOW too!!!

By Mr. ShawnR, MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 10:38 am:

I've never had a WOW on my screen - but I want this one! Nice job. This one has day dreaming written all over it!

Thank you!

By Don Johnson Calif on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 11:25 am:

Spectacular! Wish I could be up there to see it in person. Nothing like that in Calif.
GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!

By Linda in Maryland on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 12:44 pm:

It is just bootiful.I love nature, the change of the seasons. This is my favorite time of year. Nothing can discribe the many views of colors, scenery, etc. that one can enjoy in the fall....Its just breath taking. Thanks so much for sharing.

By Kathleen in MD on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 01:31 pm:

Thanks guys. It is so wonderful to see the images you put up. You have no idea how it hits someone who is far from home.

This is why I love it there and miss it so much. This is what 'fall' looks like to me in my heart always. Here in Maryland we get mostly yellows or burnt orange but not the brilliance to it that the Keweenaw has. I miss the reds most. (Thanks to Heidi for sending me red leaves in the mail.)

The day we moved to the U.P. was in October. The light was so strong with shadows stretching on forever. I can see it clearly from 35 years ago.
Nothing like it. Thank you again so much.

By Walt, Ohio on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 01:52 pm:

Great Shot! And great response! 8-)

By Stephanie Lansing,MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 02:45 pm:

Kathleen I am jealous now...I wigh someone would send me a few of the colored leaves as they are raking them up send a few my way( I didnt get up that way this fall unfortunatly)...I love all the colors and the smells of the leaves at that time of year especially the maple leaf smells so good.
So if anyone is so kind so stick a few colored leaves in a envelope e-mail me and I will give my address..
I miss the U.P. so much!

By Mary Schei, Florida on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 02:47 pm:

What a great shot, (and my new screensaver) I thought I had some good ones from the Keweenaw, but I haven't seen one this good in a long time. This is the time of year that I miss the most, except for winter and snow being hot on it's heels! There is no color anywhere like the color in the UP. (and sunsets as well). I'd give a weeks pay to be walking through those woods today instead of working here in Florida. A lonesome Yooper.

By AML NOVI, MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 03:34 pm:

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!GREAT PICTURE.

By Martha, K-zoo MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 03:45 pm:

WOW !!!!!!!WOW !!!!!!!!WOW !!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AMAZING shot of the beauty of the colors!
I'd send ya some of my leaves Steph but we are in the same boat , we live downstate and have nothing like this so I understand why you want some U.P leaves I wouldn't mind a few either it would remind me of Gods Country the BEUATIFUL U.P!

By Kevin, Brighton, MI on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 04:34 pm:

This really makes me miss the Fall color spectacular at the beginning of every school year up at the ol' Tech. I can only dream of color like this here at my desk in lower Michigan. Thanks for the awesome pic!

By Joan, Ohio on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 08:02 pm:

I had wanted to come to the U.P. and enjoy the fall colors this year but was put on Jury Duty for the months of September and October! But, with this picture as my screensaver, I look at it each day and feel closer! But, here in Ohio, we are finally getting our colors and they are a pretty close match!! In September we had none...in October it seems like they just popped out like the buds in the spring!
Thanks again for the picture...this is my first site when I log one the computer!

By JEO, Texas on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 08:18 pm:

What can I add to what has already been said!! I don't think words are enough. I don't think that I ever really thought of this before, but reading how many people mentioned the 'smell' of fall, now that I think of it, EVERY season in the U.P. had a wonderful smell AND sound.

Charlie, is this picture a record response?

Thank you so much for this site...it is just a part of my log-in process every day!

By Pat Michigan on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 09:07 pm:

This is why I continue to live in Michigan! The fall colors are spectacular!

By Kat & Mike, Texas on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 10:29 pm:

The picture was absolutely beautiful. God does paint this world with many colors......and this time he used everyone of them.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 11:04 pm:

JEO,

Yes, I believe this page has received the most comments in the shortest amount of time. In the past 1+ year we have had comment-enabled 'big pictures' there have been some pretty lively discussions - such as John Dee's haunted house and our coverage of the Laurium plane crash in the 40's. But Ken Mell's Autumn overlook has definitely inspired a record number of comments.

By Sharon and Gordon, Georgia on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 08:11 am:

I was amazed by the beauty of the UP while visiting last summer but this picture of the fall colors is the most beautiful that I have ever seen. My husband was born and raised in the UP and he calls me the want to be Yooper.

By Missy and Ryan East Lansing,MI on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 08:57 am:

How SPECTACULAR the colors are WOW makes me wish I never moved from the U.P. at all!!!
Downstate may have a abundance of people and jobs ...But the U.P. has the abundance of beauty of nature and serenity!
How I wish I could be magically transported to the serenity of nature and be enveloped by the wonderful smell of the fall leaves *something I will always remember that special fall time smell in the air*
Well my husband and I are on the way to the Michigan State Homecoming game this morning *luckily snagged come tickets earlier this year*GO GREEN!!

By Barb, IN on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 09:21 am:

How gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the beautiful
colors with the rest of us.

By Kathy-TN originally MI on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 11:16 am:

Now I'm homesick. When was the picture taken?

By Kate, CA on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 02:20 pm:

Tragic events in our country prevented me from making my trip to the U.P. this year. Thank you Ken and pasty-cam for giving me a virtual glimpse of phenomenal autumn color.

By Elliott Ortiz on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 04:40 pm:

Oh My God! I wish I was there with you, believe me I live in NEW YORK.

By Clina Barrette on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 06:08 pm:

What beautiful brilliant colors. I'm from up there and don't remember seeing them look as beautiful as this. Thanks for sharing.

By DMac/Lake Linden on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 07:26 pm:

Wow Charlie..how cool huh? Great responses. And, Earl Kangas of Palmdale CA, you are SO RIGHT. The smell is just incredible here. You CAN smell fall, before it hits in all it's splendor. HOLY WHA MAN...nuttin' like it!

By Shirley S. nee Bezotte on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 08:14 pm:

A future trip to dream about now!! I had my first trip to the UP in July for a family reunion. (ancestors are from Chassell/Houghton) Thought I was wowed w/ the UP then & wish I could have grown up there. Now I can't wait to get back there after retirement, spend some time, & see the beauty you have shared. Thank you SO MUCH for a glimpse of a little bit of HEAVEN!!!

By Aunty Kate, MI on Saturday, October 13, 2001 - 09:17 pm:

Pasty pix comments are going to be rather dull for awhile. All the available exclamations points were used on this one. :)

By P. on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 05:55 pm:

I wish everyone could experience the beauty, joy and peace of living in God's Country. Bless anyone living in New York.

By sandie h on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 08:07 pm:

I live in Ontonagon and have been to the Porkies this time of the year and yes it is a breathtaking view. Easy access to the view and your camera is a must.

By Walt, Ohio on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 10:29 pm:

The responses keep pouring in; over 60 so far, what is the record, Carlie, or do you keep count?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 11:33 pm:

Walt,

The two links in my earlier note (scroll back about a dozen) appear to be the previous high points, neither having more than 50 messages each.

By the way, this shot is now my wallpaper (finally replacing Paul and Dotty Kinnun's shot across Copper Harbor), and it can be everybody's when they go to our Wallpaper of the Week page. Our thanks again to Ken Mell for sending it our way.

Do you think it's about time we started taking votes for the 2002 Pasty Cam Calendar?

By Annie, Jackson MI on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 09:59 am:

YES a calendar would be great....Great idea Charlie!
Hope you seriously look into making a pasty cam calendar~ I know I would proudly hang it in my house to display the U.P. everyday!

By jld, Lowperlander, MI on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 12:58 pm:

Dear Charlie,

Ooooh, here's one photog-along who votes for this one to go in the Pasty Hall of Fame. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We almost went UP toward the end of September but chose to visit family down south instead when we learned that the colors were "en retard," as our French Canadian friends would say. How much joy you have added to innumerable peeps pigeonholed into office cubby-holes all over the USA - through you we can imagine, just for a moment, that we are back in God's country. Thanks a million!
From a granddaughter of Emilda from Laurium,
Naej the Wisdom-Keeper

By Amanda, downstate Michigan on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 05:06 pm:

I grew up in Laurium and I wanted to take my trip home this past weekend but I had heard snow was in the forecast and shyed away, Seeing this makes me kick myself in the 'Ol butt for not going to the U.P. anyway ..Thanks for giving me the chance to see the colors anyway!

By Ken Mell, Illinois on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 08:22 am:

Boy, I was hoping this photo would make it to the Pasty Cam but I'm totally amazed with the amount of comments regarding it. Kathy, this photograph was taken a couple years ago during the last week of September. I was amazed of the colors myself. We had planned to go back up to the U.P. this year for the colors but didn't make it. Thanks everyone for all the comments.

By Renee in IL on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 09:00 am:

A few WOWS from me! First for this most awesome picture!! Second, I think this is the most posts I ever saw one picture get! And third, I didn't realize there were so many other IL visitors to this site! HI to all of you from another IL person who wishes she was in the UP!! Drop me an email sometime and let me know your favorite place to visit in the UP or an interesting spot you think we should check out next time my husband and I go up there.
Best wishes,

Make sure to check out the Keweenaw Penisula the west end of the U.P. is absoulte HEAVEN! The central and eastern is nice too, But my vote is for the western part even though they get a ton of snow its a nice place to visit and I highly recomend!

By YDaleo, Mi on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 12:16 am:

That is totally beautiful. Just got back tonight from Alpena area and colors are really great there also. I wouldn't trade Michigan for anyother state. And I have seen a lot of them.

By Kristy, MI on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 12:38 am:

I dedicate this photo to my Father...two years ago he left this earth for a place similar to the one Dan captured in this photo.

This is absolutely breathe taking....God has surely Blessed Michigan with these fantastic colors and God has Blessed America with Michigan!

<Charlie>: Jack, The "pc2002" means a vote for using this picture in the upcoming Pasty Cam 2002 color calendar. Actually, many more votes are coming in by email than by these discussion pages. See the details on the
calendar voting page.

As for the racoon with the fluffy tail... Dale must have better eyes than most of us.

Just catching up on the Pasty Cam after returning to California yesterday from seeing all this in person for 8 glorious days. Thanks for this shot to show my friends what I saw! (Sorry to the earlier visitors--I believe the color peak waited until I could get up there late this year to see it). U.P. autumns never cease to take my breath away with the spectacular variety of hues the trees produce. Many have multiple colors in the same leaf; some have "brush strokes" of red on yellow or gold. I went leaf collecting with Mom along the sand dunes at Eagle River, and we kept saying, "Look at THIS one!" as our fistfulls of samples got fatter to take back to the cabin with us. There's a different fascination in examining the leaves closely in addition to the one in a picture like this, which views them from a distance, making them look like a puffy multi-colored quilt. It was hard to leave--I'm homesick already!!

I've never been to the UP but I did live
in the Twin Cities for a couple years.
Living in Texas, I miss Fall and Winter.
Also I've never had a Pasty :(.
They sound real good.
