Oooo... I'm sitting here this evening in Eagle River, Listening to the sound of sleet on the windows (or is it just hard rain drops or <gasp> SNOW?) Well, at least it's warm and dry here at my window on the world, the other end of the Pasty cam pipeline.

And what a neat shot Dan Urbanski gave us to send your way for today's cam... I wonder if ANYBODY knows where it's at? Dan says its called "Virginia Creeper". In his travels around the U.P. (that narrows it down) he spotted this batch climbing the walls.

Any ideas?

maybe take the picture a little farther back. Otherwise my guess is a brick building in the U.P.

HA...sleet on the windows. Its been a while since I,ve heard that. I can only imagine :) Or snow... the U.P. is one of the few places that I've been where you can go somewhere to really "here" a lite snow fall in the woods. A place of many colors, sites, sounds, feelings, and aromas...the U.P. Its really Heaven.
Thank You

How about Lancet Glass? ..i thought you would have scrambled the letters :)

By Amber, Laurium MI on Friday, October 5, 2001 - 02:04 pm:

Wow good call Rose! I didn't even catch that until I read your response!
Lancet glass is all the bold letterrs in it...pretty sneaky!

By Mary on Friday, October 5, 2001 - 03:01 pm:

Jeepers Creepers (pun intended). I saw those bold letters and I was wondering what the heck Charlie was doing when he typed this!! You're really on the ball Rose! :D

That Virginia Creeper creeps in just about every state. I am in Illinois, and it is all over. For those who do not know, the leaves are about 5 inches wide. When I first saw it, I thought it was a "wild grape vine" as it resembles grape leaves somewhat. It is a thick vine that spreads by really strong underground runners. I know because I have trying to eradicate the vines from my yard by pulling the roots out. Some of the roots are 1 inch thick. It does turn that beautiful red in Fall, and there are tiny berries that birds are supposed to eat, but I never saw a bird go near it. Horticultural lesson over for today.

I agree with Mike. The U.P. is heaven, especially the Copper Country. Good luck to the Football and Hockey Huskies this weekend !!! And a good start to the Red Wings season last night.

Where the heck is Lancet Glass?

By Nancy E. Nelson, WI on Friday, October 5, 2001 - 05:34 pm:

WHAT the heck is Lancet Glass. I'm an English/Literature teacher--former Yooper. NOTHING about that makes sense or rings a bell.

By Scott Laurie, Mohawk on Friday, October 5, 2001 - 09:11 pm:

I would guess it is on the Superior Crafts building in Mohawk?

By Candy Goulette, CA on Friday, October 5, 2001 - 09:19 pm:

If it is Lancet Glass (good hint, Charlie!), it's on the way up M-26 toward the B&B Bar in Houghton just past the Memorial Chapel. Virginia Creeper is also all over the Calumet Electronics building on the corner of Mine and Depot Streets in Calumet (the former C&H roundhouse).

Fall has arrived in Sacramento, CA as well -- we peaked at 80 degrees today, with low 50s predicted for tonight. I don't miss the snow, but I'd love to see the leaves changing first hand (thanks, Dan Urbanski for a glimpse back to last year's color).

Great picture--I guess I have been away too long. Where is Lancet Glass?

By Charlotte, Florida on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 10:51 am:

My sister just moved to the U.P. (Marquette to be exact) and to listen to her she is living in Heaven right now. I'm stuck in Florida, pining for the mid-west, for the changing seasons, for the smell and rustle of the leaves, for the first snowfall for the holidays to be like the holidays should be. Anyone have any advice on Web sites (in addition to yours which is super) that talk about real estate, job opportunities, etc. Especially interested in picking out a site for retirement. Must be above the Mason Dixon Line. Thanks for any info and thanks for a site to get "my daily fix" of autumn.

By Don Schwenk on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 01:11 pm:

It is Lancet Glass... My son and I live on the top floor of the building ... WE bought it to have the ultimate GUY place .. I guess we have a loft in the U.P.. The view is great out the front window too..... Thanks for the pic,,the leaves fell off the other day, they were growing across my bedroom window... Don

By Chris, Pelkie on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 06:36 pm:

Nancy,
Lancet Glass is on the m-26 South, next to the B&B bar and just a couple buildings away from Hardee's in Houghton. What a shame to have to identify a landmark by a fast food building!
