I wanted to share this bit of natural beauty that I captured this summer because some gifts are too good to keep to yourself. I also wanted my friends to know that I am NOT crazy to make the drive from Maryland to the UP a couple of times a year.

Hey Peter,

I also am a Yooper and I now happen to live in Maryland (Germantown/Gaithersberg area), and I was wondering how many hours it took you to get to the UP?

My kinda picture--at my favorite place.

MD Yooper,

I leave from the Frederick area and it takes me 17 to 18 hours. I do the turnpike driving at nigh (if I can) so that the ever-present construction doesn't slow me down as much.

Great picture. I love the details of the driftwood and the colors of the rocks.

You think Nancy Nelson like's to take pictures of the UP - You should see all the rocks from the Calumet water works that she has in her garage to paint!!

When I was a teenager growing up in Calumet, we called the Calumet Waterworks "Bucky's" after a vendor who had a small shop there in the summer. It was a great place for kids like me to swim and be with friends. The police never let things get out of hand of course. We had a lot of fun at the Calumet Waterworks.

My daughter attended MTU for the past four years. Of course, every visit, I found myself at Calumet Waterworks Park. She met her future husband at school, graduated, married and moved away. I doubt that I'll be back for many years. In my office desk drawer I have a small bag of agates I found on that very beach. Part of that beach is with me - but more important - part of me will always be on that beach. How I miss it's quiet beauty...
