We were on the Keweenaw Star sunset cruise and just before the Lilly pond (on Portage Canal) saw this majestic bird. All cameras were busy clicking away. As we boated by, it took off to its nest on the other side of the canal. We all heard the baby birds calling for their supper. Totally awesome. I highly recommend a cruise on the Keweenaw Star. What a unique opportunity to see the canal and the Lake from a different perspective.

Thanks.

Beautiful picture, Ann. We saw some eagles as we were going through the canal coming back from Isle Royale, but not in our dreams up that close.

What an awesome image! Particularly at a time when the symbolism is a focus of the entire Nation!

I frequently see Bald Eagles' on my trip up north. Right around the junction of 117 and M-28 just west of Newberry.
I have also spotted them just South East of the town of Seney in an old gravel pit.
Not to mention along U.S. 2 by Engadine, where the Zoo is.
These sightings were last year. I have yet to see one this year.

Saw two (probably the same pair that nests by Lily Pond) cavorting over Tuff Truck at the snowmobile club just south of Houghton this past Saturday (the 22nd). Also somewhere in my piles of pictures from working on the lake a couple summers have one of a juvenile sitting on the metal pilings along the canal by the north entry. Always good to see them. :)
