Typing these words from a motel room at Birch Run... We miss the U.P. already, though it was nice to eat at an Applebee's this evening.

On our way down this morning, there was quite a bit of highway construction. Here's a creative sign man on the Seney Stretch - passing the time with some reading material.

Eventually he finished the chapter... and we were on our way.

I've been told they're adding a passing lane to the Seney Stretch. Is that really true? I can't believe it. Years ago, as a student at Michigan Tech, we used to kid about tying the wheel down and going to sleep for a half hour as we traveled the 30 miles, straight and level.

Larry, that's a good one..."passing lane on the Seney Stretch". I never tied my wheel down but sure could have used a nap while driving that road.

Actually, the rumor you heard about Seney Stretch was probably related to MDOT's construction of a scenic lookout at the mid-point of the run.

ive been headed to hancock every summer since i was a baby. my family dates back to the original settlers up there. Now we have always called them the seney flats. cause when i was young before all the trees grew there was just flat land.

Years ago a policeman stopped my then traveling salesman husband for traveling somewhere in the area of 85-90 MPH on the Seney stretch. Asked if he knew how fast he was going, he said yes, followed by "and who am I bothering?" Policeman had no answer, and let him off with a warning. He also got caught in some horrible snowstorms on that stretch--nothing much to stop the howling wind.

Drove the Seney Stretch on Monday, going to and from Marquette and Grand Marias. Yes, they are adding passing lanes in that area and it looks real nice, even though they are not finished.

What is scenic about the Seney Stretch that would require a scenic turnout? About the only scenic thing on that whole stretch is the new rest area with the water that you could not drink for a short period of time. Tell Candice Miller to raise the speed limit to 70 MPH. Deer will be killed just as efficently as before at 55 MPH.

Talking about eating at Applebee's. I hope the one's in lower Michigan are better then the one's here in Wisconsin. I would much rather eat at The Ambassador in Houghton.

I too traveled that Seney Stretch, and, like the traveling salesman mentioned above, was also stopped for going approximately 85 mph - by a City officer of all people. What he was monitoring out there I'll never know, but when I responded similarly to the salesman, this police officer didn't let me off quite so easily. Perhaps because he had heard the response before.

I can't believe that you were happy to eat at Applebee's. The U.P. is one of the few places that isn't overrun with such ugly chain places.

Ahh, the old stretch. It seems no matter how fast you drive it it still takes the same 1/2 hour. I can personally confirm the "bad snow area" comment. There were times like Thanksgiving and Christmas on our way down to relatives that my wife thought I was crazy for continuing. I just told her that at least driving at night my field of vision was limited to the beam of my headlights and made it easier to see the last set of tracks. Thank you Subaru.

M28 is a god awful road of nothing. As a troll visiting the U.P., I was amazed at that 55mph speed limit when most people set their cruises at around 70-75. If you go ten over, at 65, you will be passed. Get your reps up there to change the limit. I didn't have any problems though, went from Trout Lake to Marquette and back. Each way was only 2 hours going 75. ;-)
