Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 07:00 pm:

Living here in the U.P. we seem so isolated from the rest of the world, especially the big cities. Today, however, we could not ignore the events in Washington DC, New York City, and near Pittsburg. For those in the future who may look back into these archives, this was the day a co-ordinated terrorist attack on Amereica occurred, with unbelievable destruction and loss of life.

For some time now, at the end of each month our daily photo journal has dedicated a sunset to the memory of friends who have traveled that 'valley of the shadow of death'. Today our thoughts and prayers are with those families and individuals affected by this tragedy.

By Doug Smith Wixom, Mi on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 08:27 pm:

A very fitting message today for this awefull tragedy that has occurred in our nation. Our prayers go out to those unfortunate ones that will never see another sunset.

By DMac/Lake Linden on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 08:46 pm:

A beautiful tribute and photo to go with it. Thanks Charlie.

By Janet Mikkola Rosenberg on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 09:33 pm:

Having worked in the World Trade Center and then in a building right nearby, today was chilling. I know the entire area intimately. I heard about a man who ran right by an airplane's wing and then down a many-storied staircase and got out in time. Another friend exited the subway under the Trade Center on her way to work and heard an official shout for everyone to get out. She did and while she looked up, she saw the second plane crash into the building. She ran for what she thought was her life. This has been a terrible, terrible day for the Nation and especially for those of us who live in and love New York City.

By Idaho on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 - 11:50 pm:

I knew in my heart that there would be a sunset when I opened Pasty Cam. Then the tears came.

By David S. on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 01:20 am:

This is a terribly sad time for all Americans and cililized people around the world. We will get through this and go on. Terrorism will not bring this great country down. This may have woke up the sleeping giant, again.

By Jen in Washington State on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 01:57 am:

A sobering and mind boggling day for all of America, and indeed, the world. How could so much evil come together to create such a tragedy? May we all treat each other more kindly and gently in all our daily contacts with our fellow sharers of this world after seeing what hate does.

By Walt, Ohio on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 06:16 am:

Charlie,
Thanks for creating and maintaining a site that provides such an effective forum for Faith Hope and Love in a way that helps to bring Peace to heavy hearts and troubled souls. God Bless!

By Jack, Dallas TX on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 09:16 am:

Here in Dallas TX, the traffic was somber all day; there was none of that jockeying for position, passing one another and speeding here and there as Dallas area traffic is so known for. People drove in straight lines, below the speed limit, with no one changing lanes… as if in a funeral procession. The mood here is with a sense of morning as we watch and feel with great pain and mystification the tragedies of our neighbors in New York. It was a sunset kind of day.

By Jack OK on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 09:20 am:

Even in my little part of the world, I sat numbly and watched the news unfold throughout the day yesterday. Then it really hit home as I retired to bed last night, all the spouses and children who were alone in their homes due to this horrific act. Yes, it was a sleepless night for this American.

By NLH, Massachusetts on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 09:21 am:

I work in a Lutheran Church in Sudbury, Massachusetts. As the news came in, we waited to hear if people from our congregation were on the planes out of Boston which had been used to create these horrendous acts. So far, the news is good. We have heard from no one who was travelling. There were some close calls, though -- a mother of two who works for United as a flight attendant was supposed to have flown out of Logan yesterday morning. We found out that her flight had been cancelled the night before, and not rescheduled.

Another of our members was in the air as it occurred, and was headed for the west coast. His wife was in limbo for hours until he could land and get a clean call through to her.

This is still a tragedy for us. At any time life is lost, senselessly, needlessly, it's a tragedy. Even as close as we are, we feel separated from the tragedy. I long to be with friends, family, most of whom are all in Michigan, to be able to be sure that they're all right.

We can only pray, and wait. We can keep faith, and hope that tomorrow brings us yet another good day, with no mass destruction.

But our lives will never be the same.

In the memory of all those who died, let us pray for peace.

By Yooper in the South on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 09:44 am:

This is the greatest tragedy I've seen in my lifetime(25yrs). However, I've never felt so proud to be an American before.

By Karen on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 09:45 am:

Thank you. The picture provides a measure of closure.

By Trudge, Minnesota on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 10:21 am:

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

By Karen in Oshkosh on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 11:26 am:

I was so moved by the message above from Jen in Washington State that I copied it, enlarged it to fill a full page, and just now hung it over my work station. Thank you Jen.
And Charlie. . .thank you for the sunset.

By Lesley on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 12:39 pm:

Idaho has already said what I would have said. I knew there would be a sunset, and it was more wrenching than anything else I saw yesterday. It has happened, it is real.

By Lesley on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 12:45 pm:

My high school class has their own e-mail network and we've been trying to track down 2 of our NYC classmates, both of whom work in the financial district. This came though at the end of one of this mornings tracking messages and I thought I'd pass it on to you .... "Raise your guard, not your fears."

By CheddarJohn on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 01:18 pm:

A sad day for America yesterday. A moment of silence for the victims, a prayer for the survivors and rescue workers.

By Svein on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 02:09 pm:

Dear friends. Watching the CNN sending the news from USA, we dont believe what we are seeing.
Shocked at the horrible incident, we are thinking of you all. We feel sorry that this is happening to our friends. Outside the American embassy in Oslo, people did place candlelights and flowers, in sympathy, and today we fly the flag at half mast. All good wishes to all of you from Norway - Scandinavia.

By Joan,Ohio on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 02:44 pm:

After sitting through all that horror yesterday on all the TV channels, I did pretty well...only cried when the towers came down. But this morning when I logged onto this site, I totally lost it when I saw that beautiful picture of the sunset and the wonderful comments from the people who also logged on...never have the Americans been so close as when there is such a tragedy...God Bless America...that song should be sung by us all! Hopefully our government will get to the bottom of who is behind it and they will pay the price. We should all continue to pray for our president and all who help him, even if we are not in the same political party...no time for that now. And pray for the victims families, friends, and co-workers. Our country needs reform and revival!

By Fred, Germany on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 03:22 pm:

What a total useless waste of human life. I can't believe that such people really exist. My thoughts go out to the victims, families and rescue teams. And I hope that our Government brings these animals to justice soon.
The Germans had their flag at half mast today in memory of the victims. It was nice to feel their support.

By Kathy, Michigan on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 07:49 pm:

Please have this wonderful picture as a "Wallpaper of the Week". I kept Margaret Uren's picture as mine, until this one. It is a way to remember, but then I don't think any of us will ever forget September 11, 2001. I am so touched by the foreign responses to this tragedy.

By John Bernard Chabot, California on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 08:37 pm:

Thank you kindly for the opportunity to again gaze at part of the beautiful U.P. sunset on your web site, it brought back, precious, fond, treasured memories of long stays with our beloved grandparents. At beautiful, peaceful, Lake Linden & also Calumet MI before WW2.
Then carnage, likened to bloody, war battles, came into view from media & awakened my reasoning. I wept inside myself, when I saw billows of smoke over Arlington Cemetery. The resting place of our country’s hero’s.
America’s free soil, which was bought & paid for by the blood of our brave patriots & forebear’s, was being stained, by the ugly forces of evil.
Devastation’s, pain, sufferings, travail & death was inflicted, upon innocent men, women & children of New York City. The symbol & home of ‘Our Lady of Liberty’. Also upon D.C. The citadel of our brave fore fathers & heritage of precious American freedom. May the torch of our Lady Liberty, always continue to be held high & remain bright.
My point in this sharing. Could it be, that Armageddon battle lines, are now being drawn, against the forces of such evil. Has the count down begun, for the final major decisive battle, set forth in the prophetic Book of Revelations ? There may be wisdom, in our listening, in order to determine, if nuclear trumpets, are in fact being sounded.
May we always, prayerfully, , be united, together, in praise, with thanks to God, for our many blessings. Especially that we are still able to live in this beautiful land, with our freedom. Let us ask for protection, in order, to stand together, in harms way, with out fear, for the ways of truth. May we also commit our selves, to preserve the bulwarks, ramparts & parapets framing the principles, that were laid down, under God, in truth, in order to found this great free nation that we lovingly call the
United States of America.
With peace, hope & fond memories of the U.P.
Another example of our free citadels, in America The Beautiful, designed for us, by the master of all creations.

We all seem to feel so far apart and distant from each other as a Nation...Until now when through our grief and horror we are joined toether!
My sympathys to the victims, families, and all those people who have risked thier lives and continue to do the same ...the firefighters,EMT and countless others who are showing outstanding Human Spirit in the face of tradedy..We are now brought together as a Nation in mourning!

I, as every American is in shock, disbelief... The images of September 11, 20011 are forever engraved in our phsyches. Words cannot express what will hopefully be the most horrific day in our lives. Today's photograph will never be removed from my computer in honor of those lost as the result of the acts of the faceless vermin who have disrupted our world. God bless America! Display your flags and resolve proudly!

God bless our colleagues/comrades in Oslo, Norway for sharing what our U.S. media has not.

A message to those who have lost loved ones on this day.

Even though it seems that God is not in control, I want to say that it is important to remember that He is. I know this all too well. My wife and two children died in a house fire in Elkhart, IN. seven months ago. It may not seem fare but God has a PLAN.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL OF YOU!!!

By praise God on Thursday, September 13, 2001 - 01:10 pm:

Isaiah 13:3 "I, the Lord, have assigned this task to these armies, and they will rejoice when I am exalted. I have called them to satisfy my anger."

Psalm 9:15-20 "The nations have fallen into the pit they dug for others. They have been caught in their own trap. The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked have traped themselves in their own snares. The wicked will go down to the grave. This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God. For the needy will not be forgotten forever; the hopes of the poor will not always be crushed. Arise, O Lord! Do not let mere mortals defy you! Let the nations be judged in your presence! Make them tremble in fear, O Lord. Let them know they are merely human."

Isaiah 65

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 "Each time he said, 'My gracious favor is all you need. My power works best in your weakness.' So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may work through me. Since I know it is all for Christ's good, I am quite content with my weaknesses and with insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Psalm 56:3-4 "But when I am afraid, I put my trust in you. O God, I praise your word. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?"

As a whole, our country has turned away God. We have found security in things other than the only true security that we have, God. We have become self-sufficient in all that we need and do, not leaning on God for those things. We are a prideful nation. God is a jealous God and I praise Him for that. When we turn from Him, He will do what He has to do get us to turn back to Him. My prayer is that God's people will unite and will be empowered by Him to show everyone, boldly and confidently, that God is the only thing that will never be torn down. He is the only thing that will last for eternity, nothing that we treasure here on earth can promise us that: not buildings, not our government, not money, nothing, only God. We must confess the truth (2 Corinthians 13:8-9). I long for the day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Lord of all.

By God is in control on Thursday, September 13, 2001 - 01:17 pm:

I want to share some lyrics from a song that express the prayer and cry of my heart:

"Break our hearts, O God, break our hearts. Break our hearts, O God, break our hearts. For the sin in our lives, break our hearts. For the sin in our land, break our hearts. We cry out, we need Your hand. Come back to our land. And we confess we lived in sin, please show Your power once again."
