I must confess I'm like a lot of people I've talked to lately: overcommitted, overloaded, somehow realizing that life has become overcrowded with demands and deadlines. Friday evening brings back thoughts of a simpler time - school days, when every weekend was a vacation, without a care in the world.

When my daughter was about 8 or 9, one summer we started walking along the Lake every day, going a little farther down the shore west of Eagle River. There were some real adventures, clinging to the rocks, running the ridges on the bluffs, or just strolling along the sandy beaches. By autumn, we had worked our way clear down to Five Mile Point and the Sand Hills Lighthouse (which was deserted at that time). It was some of the best times we've spent together, when we came to know the shoreline like a good friend.

When the demands and pressures of life become great, and the week comes to an end, I like to just sit here listening to the waves, thinking back to those walks. My daughter's married now, and enjoys hiking with her husband. Maybe one of these days we can share some of their Isle Royale photos from earlier this summer.

Thanks, Charlie (and Jon!) for a great big 'ahhhh' at the end of a very busy school week. If weekends are great for school kids, imagine how eagerly anticipated they are for school principals! Since I can't walk that wonderful craggy shoreline in person, my eyes can follow the memory path in my mind, jogged by Jon's terrific map.

Sounds good to me, Charlie! I feel the beach calling me at times, too, here in Florida. Walking along the beach watching the ocean waves puts my life into perspective and clears the cobwebs. I remember when my Mother saw the ocean for the first time. She was in awe and wonder and she said how amazing it was that her parents and older siblings came across that ocean from Finland in a small boat to settle in this country.

You said it! A great place to get away from it all. Just listen to the wind and the heart beat of Lake Superior, smell the pines and relax! I could just look at this photo all day long...its the U.P.

Thanks Charlie for the photo to bring us all back to what we need to see and do. We all need to just be human beings and not human doings sometimes. Working 6 days per week there is not much time to just be.

I call those strolls on the big lake, NATURE'S VALIUM. There is nothing like sitting (or walking) on that lake to take away the worries and problems of day to day life. You relax. You unwind. You lose your worries. You simply enjoy and know you are truly blessed.

I need a big bunch of it right now,but must hang in a little longer. Thanxs for the pick me up.

Amen! to Dick's thought. Me and a friend walked from that Five Mile Point lighthouse to Jacob's Creek back in '56 or '57. Sure does bring back memories, Charlie. Thanks or should I say 'Kiitos."

My husband and I beleive this is along M26 by Hebard Park.... 5 mile point beaches have sand not so much rock.....

Was Jonathan walking alone when he took this beautiful picture? This picture made me substitute it for the rainbow over Copper Harbor picture.

Lorne, you are right, this is not a shot on the way to 5 mile point, even though my narrative above referred to that stretch of beach.

For every picture you see on the Pasty Cam, I have the pleasure of looking through about 20 shots on average. (Yes, that's somewhere around 25,000 shots over the past few years). Based on the other pictures in the sequence from Jonathan's disk that day, I think this was somewhere out near the tip of the Peninsula. Two pictures beyond this, he has a pair of views which include the Gull Rock lighthouse in a fascinating depth-of-field comparison. In fact, I believe you could see the lighthouse if you were standing on one of the higher rocks in the view above. This animated view gives the perspective:

It's has been a few years since I have been in Eagle river. My family owns a cabin that way and I grew up along Lake Superior. I miss it and hope to soon bring my kids to share in the adventures that I grew up with. Thanks for the memories.
