No matter how warm the temperatures topside, down here in the bowels of the earth it's always in the upper 40's... unless, of course, you hopped a tram and ventured deeper. Eventually the heat would begin rising. But the shafts are filled with water these days, and so we stay on the cool levels.

Jonathan found enough light in this cavern to capture his friend Katriina, visiting from Marquette. (I know we'll hear from our friend Bill Penprase about THAT :o)

For more about Delaware Mine, see their website.

I've been impressed by Jonathan's diligence in pursuing the internet business in Marquette. The Michigan Highway Department has probably recorded a record traffic increase between Calumet and Marquette this summer. There have been trips for a wedding, seeking new business, and even a piano recital.

It is so nice to meet you, Katriina, and we all welcome you aboard this special ship.

I've been trying to piece together all of Jonathan's activity the last few days and have come to the conclusion that we visited the Hiawtha Drive In and the Delaware mine because he is searching for an unusual site for the next piano recital. ( PIANO ? ) :o)

Does anyone know if there has ever been a wedding in a copper mine.

The Adventure Mine by Rockland comes to mind. Does anyone else remember a wedding there?

Thanks for the shot of the Delaware Mine. As a kid growing up in Houghton in the '60s I used to explore the abandoned mines with my friends, and this picture brought back many memories. Admittedly a dangerous passtime, but great fun.

Hi Bill P.,

It was a VOICE recital, not piano. In fact, when Katriina visited us in Eagle River last week she found an old original sheet music of the Bing Crosby song "A Ghost of a Chance With You", and sang it while I ad-libbed on the piano. What a voice! In fact, her smooth tones and melody diverted attention from a piano badly in need of tuning.
