With this weekend's Houghton County Fair, perhaps you would consider using the attached photo for your weekly shoebox memory. It was taken on September 29,1927 at the HC Fair. The 7-year-old "Sabu" is my mother, Carmen Wimmer. This was taken along the Hoton waterfront near the old Dee. This sort of customer interaction with the circus animals would not happen in today's world.

Once again--so glad I inspired the "shoebox memories" Never imagined what it would start, and how many wonderful pictures would come to the site. Thank you "Chopper" for being willing to start this site. Obviously there are a lot of people who have the shoeboxes and would love to share the memories.

Didn't the HC fair celebrate it's 50th birthday this year? If that is so...then this picture wouldn't be from then. Otherwise, the HC fair's 50th birthday would have been in 1977, if this pic was taken in it's first year. Pretty cool picture tho! Thanks!!

Any ideas?

At first i thought it was a picture of the elephant that died in the late 1800's (i think)
that had been part of a circus. Heard that it was buried across from the Schoolcraft Cemetery in Calumet. Anyone know anything more about that story?
