Grandma's Pasties is proud to partner with Pasty Central! We're Sandy and Chuck Hoyer, the owners, former Yoopers from Houghton and Hancock.

Visit us at the Minnesota State Fair August 23 - September 3. We are located on the corner of Underwood and Dan Patch, across from the Visitor's Plaza and next to the original Penny Arcade.

This year we are adding two new flavors -- breakfast with ham, scrambled eggs, cheese and potatoes and pasty pizzano with sausage, pepperoni and cheese. This brings our menu to six different pasties -- meat, chicken, veggie and our delicious apple dessert pasty. Grandma's also offers frozen pasties to take home.

Another surprise for everyone -- VERNORS ginger ale. It took much searching and we found it in the fountain variety. Vernors kind of goes hand in hand with the South American cruise boat which was featured not too long ago on the pasty cam. They both stir little remembrances of the past.

After the fair, these wonderful pasties are available locally by calling 612-747-6033 and placing an order. Our office is located in Bloomington not far from the Mall of America. Pasties can even be picked up the same day if your order is received by noon. You can reach us at the fair by calling the same number.

We are happy to be a part of the Pasty Central family!

Cruise out to the fair

Thanks for the directions to find the booth.I will definitely be by to enjoy some yooper food before I head up to god's country for Labor day weekend(Ontonagon).Take care all...and enjoy the fair if you get a chance to go.

By Ken from da UP on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 11:12 pm:

Oh, man. Waves of nostalgia when I see a pic of the North or South American. Someday someone will realize that there is a place on the Lakes for a cruise liner from Michigan, not Germany or Norway. I still drink Vernor's Ginger Ale when da tummy don't feel too good. It helps.

By Kate, St. Paul on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 09:11 am:

Good luck with this new endeavor! I'll tell my friends to try a Pasty rather than walleye on a stick or gator on a stick or corn dog on a stick, or other less wholesome foods on a stick. And Vernor's too --that's a Michigan treat too.

By Hyla versicolor on Thursday, August 23, 2001 - 03:40 pm:

One of the best State Fairs on the planet!

We can even get Vernor's in selected grocery stores in California but you have to really look for it. Not everyone carries it. A real treat...and Ken, not only when the tummy is upset. However, when the tummy is upset, there is nothing better. Used to be able to get hardtack too, but that is no longer. Now have to find an Ikea to get the round packages out here. Do they still sell that hard cinnamon toast in paper bag packages in the UP? The kind my dad used to dunk in his coffee.

By Betty - AZ on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 01:55 am:

As I'm reading this I was drinking a Vernors here too in AZ. When I do, I think I'm back home in MI. We moved from 'up home' (Mohawk) to Detroit area when I was young, and we used to go down on Woodward Ave. to the Vernors plant and watch it being bottled right through the windows. It was sad when they stopped doing it there on Woodward Ave. Oh what memories the Pasty Cam brings to us. THANK YOU CHARLIE FOR YOUR TIME.

By R Somero CA on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 02:35 am:

Alice in CA. What stores carry Vernors? I'm in San Jose. Lucky's-now Albertson's had real hardtack a few years ago. Maybe Safeway too. My mother-in-law sends me Trenary Toast in a care package once in a while. Also, home made saffron buns! (They're not all bad you know).

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 05:11 am:

Betty -

Thank you for the Thank you :o) It does require a lot of details every day to keep Pasty Central coming your way... But it is very rewarding to see all the comments and hear from so many friends who share our love for the U.P. and the Great Lakes region.

By Rita MN on Friday, August 24, 2001 - 12:05 pm:

We enjoyed the first day of the state fair on Thursday with the delicious pasties for lunch. Our 10-year-old twins chose pasties instead of the usual corn dog and foot-long hot dog they like...and when a number of hungry fair-goers asked us where they could get one, we just pointed them to the Grandma's Pasties stand. Thank you!

By Phil & Nancy from MN on Saturday, August 25, 2001 - 12:11 pm:

We will be there first thing Monday morning. What time do you open??? Thinking of a breakfast pasty.

By The Hoyers, Minnesota on Saturday, August 25, 2001 - 03:41 pm:

Pasty sales for the first two days of the State Fair are up 45% over last year. Everyone is getting into the pasty thing. We open at 7AM and close around midnight. The breakfast pasty is a huge sucess, ham and eggs with shredded potatoes and cheeese wrapped in a flakey crust nothing could be better in the morning. Then at noon go for the meat pasty. Later in the afternoon have a apple dessert pasty topped with grandmas special sauce

By Lorraine on Monday, August 27, 2001 - 12:18 am:

By R. Pennala, Howell, MI on Monday, August 27, 2001 - 10:09 am:

Trenary toast can be ordered direct from the Trenary bakery - just call 1-800-toast-01

I always stock up when leaving the U.P. but when I run out - it's only a phone call away!

By DH , Houghton on Thursday, August 30, 2001 - 10:17 am:

My family and I visited the MN state fair on Friday, August 24. What a great surprise to see Yooper pasties for sale. It was the best part of the fair - pasties from home with Vernors ginger ale.

By The Hoyers, MN on Tuesday, September 4, 2001 - 11:43 pm:

It's late at night on 9/4 and the fair is finished for another year. One more day and everything will be home again. We want to thank everyone who visited us. There were many. Glad you liked Grandma's/Pasty Central's offerings. The Vernors was a huge success. We'll do that again for sure. Breakfast was great. There's very little portable breakfasts out there. See you all next year. Thanks Charlie, John and Mike and everyone else who backed us up. We love you all.

By Sharon MI on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 - 09:14 pm:

There isn't much better than a pasty and a Vernor's to go with it. That is classic Michigan cuisine and we are grateful for it. Sharon

By Sharon, MI on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 - 09:17 pm:

I am so grateful for the history of having pasties and the Vernor's. We have had them in our lives and tend to take them for granted, and not everyone is so blessed. Sharon, MI

By Big Daddy , California on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 05:46 pm:

Vernor's is great with scotch !! Why is it so hard to find even before having a drink ? It is by far one of the best ginger ales around. I think A&W distributes it but they're doing a lousy job of it. Pepsi should distribute it and maybe we can all get a look at Britney Spears guzzling some of that tasty Vernor's down the old hatch. I guess that would be young hatch but you can still get the visual.

By Helen on Saturday, September 7, 2002 - 01:40 am:

Does anyone know where we can buy Vernor's in the San Diego, CA area? We would really like to know.
As kids used to go on a cold day and drink hot Vernor's in a really special Vernor's building in Flint, MI.
Thanks.

By Anne, South Caroina on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

I was sitting at my desk at work drinking a Vernors Ginger Ale & thought I'd do a search & see what turned up. What a surprise! Also got a rush from the past remembering my Mom's homemade pasties. I used to make them, but it's been a long time. Down here in the south, Vernors can be found at Publix and sometimes Winn Dixie grocery stores. Still my drink of choice after all these years!

I am in great need of cases of Vernor's Ginger Ale! I am from Detroit and have lived in Boston for 26 years and can't find it anywhere. I used to travel to Detroit a couple of times a year and always brought back cases of this nectar. Now I no longer go there and I am down to one final bottle of Vernor's! Help I need to find some around here.
