Yesterday's aerial photo over Lake Linden was taken exactly on the other side of these buildings, up a couple thousand feet, and many years later. Last winter we discussed St. Joseph church (see March 11, 2001), and about the only thing we have not reported regarding Lake Linden is the *future*.

Ah... now we have that covered, too! There is a water expansion project in the Village's future, and you can see reports and share your comments at the new discussion center on the Village of Lake Linden site.

Our thanks to Jim Haralson for finding this shot in a box in his basement. I'm curious if any Pasty Cam visitors attended St. Joseph's back in Rev. Raymond's day?

RPE Grand Rapids, MI. Getting some great old pictures showing up on the Pasty Cam and they really bring back memories. By any chance does anyone have an old shot of the corner of Elm and Seventh Streets in Calumet? One that shows the old residence on the corner and the grocery store between it and the Italian Hall. Monsenior Raymond, I remember him well.He would give us our reportcards. Most kids were afraid of him,but he was nice to my sister & I.Did you know he had a glass eye? He use to ask us if we wanted to see it and it grossed us out. No one wanted to see it.His car of choice was a cadillac. You can see the house we lived in from the aerial picture.Thanks for the good memories

Is Jim Sue's husband?
My father and I were going through some of our old pictures, and came across pictures of cemetery road when my great grandfather and his father owned that property throughout known as the Harris farm. He apperently donated cemetery property to the local churches and the village.
I guess our Family and the "Captian William Harris" family has always crossed wires of history. We did not own the General store or the old sandstone block home on 2nd street.But funny as it seems, I was raised at the corner of 2nd and Kit streets. The old house has since burned down along with MRS Kusisto's house back in 89' or 90'. Which reminds me I have one of the very few pictures of my dearest friend Jim McNickel. Im sure alot of people still remember the happy go lucky man who lost his eye sight in Veitnam. You could always find him at Lindells or the old Jim's Pizza having coffe. When I have a chance I'll send it out to remember a great man that had more than enough people who cared about him.

I sure remember Jim also, working for the airline I came in contact with him numerous times. He was quite a guy, and it would be nice to see a photo of him.

Well I am coming home for a sad visit home soon for the funeral of a good friend..But I will take in the serenity of the area also..it will be s short trip this time..I hope to be back again to see the fall colors!

Jim is not Sue's husband. He is Sue's husband's father's or grandfather's cousin. I'm not sure which of the Clayton Haralson boys Sue is married to. Jim is Elmer Haralson's son.

In the aerial view of St. Joe's Church, the rectory is on the north side of the church. In the street-level shot on this page, the rectory seems to have moved to the south side. Am I seeing things or is this picture reversed? I recall looking from my grandparents' house on the corner of 8th and Calumet and seeing directly into the rectory, where I imagined Msgr. Raymond had a spyglass on me and was taking notes!

Good observation. The house to the right of the church in the picture above is missing from the 8/18 aerial shot. Over the years the house was removed, addition built on the church, and parking lot added.

Another piece of Trivia. The Church, when originally built, was inteded to face Front Street (east). That would explain the large arched doors you see in the rear of the church in the aerial photo. Also, notice how the roofline and sidewalls jog outward near the rear where the steeples would have been. Because the elevation of Front street is lower than Calumet street, there were many steps to climb to reach the sanctuary once entering the front doors. Before the Church was completed, the entrance of the church was changed to face Calumet Street (west), eliminating the number of stairs needed to reach the sanctuary. This is the facade you see in the old black and white photo.

I remember the statues above the entrance to St. Joe's being painted to look human-like! They have been painted white now, for a number of years. They just fascinated me as a little kid, when they were colored.

Hi - Sue's daughter here... she's married to Bob Haralson! :-) and even I remember Jim... my parents have a nice picture of him in his uniform when he was in the service. My daughter just pulled it out the other day and asked who it was.

Sure would be nice to see that photo.

This was the church my mother attended--I have heard much about Fr. Raymond! She graduated from LLHHS in 1934...anyone out there from that time? (She just turned 86.)

Hi Shan and everyone! Michele here (Jimmy's "little" sister) all the way out in Seattle, Washington. I just wanted to say 'hi' and thank you for being such great friends to Jimmy and remembering him so fondly. This is one of my favorite photos of him. I have most of the family pictures from when my dad died (Jim Sr.) and will see if there is another picture that I could scan and add to the memories. Hope this finds you all well. I love this web site, it has left me craving a pasty!!!!

I put my dad's name into a search engine just to see what would come up and this website came up. My dad's name is Jim McNickle, but we're from Ohio. Wonder if we're related to anybody out that way! Lemme know if you think it's possible!

James A McNickle II grandfather name was George C. McNickle. George had a brother called Charles. Their father name was also Charles and he was from County Tyrone North Irland. Charles senior had a brother called Clifford who lived in the Detroit Michigan area. Any relation?

My name is Jerry McNichol and I live in Montana.
My ggrandfather James McNickle (SIC) came from County Tyrone, the townland of Rousky. My grandfather, John McNickle, changed the spelling of his name to McNichol after meeting with a first cousin in New York at the turn of the century.
I'm not sure when my ggrandfather James came over, but he came to eastern Kansas in 1857 and joined the GAR in 1861.
My grandfather John was a twin. His sister;s name was Mary. He had other sister's Jane, Emma, and Margaret (Maggie) and brothers Charles and William.
I would be interested in pursuing the McNickle name in Ohio. I do know that a James McNickle from Ohio served in the Civil War and that several McNichols and McNickles from the Cincinnati area also.
In fact, I had thought that maybe my James might have come down the St. Lawrence Seaway through Ohio on his way to Kansas.
I do know that the Colonel chosen by President Lincoln to lead the Kansas Volunteer Infantry was from Ohio and he just happened to land in eastern Kansas about the same time as my ggrandfather.
I have tons of material from County Tyrone, and especially the townlands of Culvacullion, Rousky, Carsona, Glenlark, Gorticashel and Gortin.
I have a relative that married a Quigley and lived in Lake County, OH, near Cleveland.
