I ate here in the fall of 1980 and had the best lake trout I have ever had. Over twenty years later and I can still remember how great it was. The Onagaming was a wonderful place to dine...good food, good view, and the "purest, most vitalizing air on Earth!" (See July 2, 2001)

Not far from this very spot that sign used to hang:

...I still haven't received any color pictures of the old sign - (get out your shoebox memories and email me).

We live on the lake across from Pilgrim Point, so it features in many of my lake photos. Here's a nice summer view.

Used to swim off the dock there in the mid 50s. The Pelto cottage was across the canal from the
Onigaming Yacht Club. It's a private residence now? Wow! Beautimous!

There was an historical event that occurred on the Yacht club site.

Prior to white men settling the area, the fierce Iroquois tribe had driven a part of the great Algonquin nation westward from the lower lakes region. They took refuge in the deep forest of the Upper Peninsula, splitting into various tribes - the Menominee, the Keweenaw, the Pequaming and the largest, the Chippewa.

Harried and desparate, the Chippewas finally turned on the attacking Iroquois and defeated them. The Iroquois withdrew from the U.P.

The Rev. Edward Jacker's very readable account of the "Massacre of Battle Island" is on pages 255/256 of the Houghton County chapter in THE HISTORY OF THE UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN published in 1883 in Chicago by The Western Historical Company, A. Andreas, Proprietor.

This is one of the things I love about this site: someone always knows a little history, the scientific names or details, the who, when, and where! And can supply links or photos. I have learned so much. Thanks.

My mom, daughter and I also dined there with Andrea Hauge, a great lady who taught PE at Suomi College, was a neighbor and a wonderful friend to my mom.

Pilgrim point looks wonderful Uncle Wally. Is it named after your birthplace?
Wish I could have taken a vacation in the UP this summer, I missed seeing you and all of my Aunts, Uncles, and cousins and Grandma.

The family reunion was perfect, it is amazing that is is almost 4 years ago now.

Does anyone know who I need to get in contact with to inquire about renting the building at Pilgrim Point for a reception? Please respond.

When I graduated from Michigan Tech in May 1986 all of my grandparents and my parents came to the beautiful copper country. We all went for dinner at the Onagaming Supper Club. Everything was perfect - the food, the view, the service, and the atmosphere. One of my most favorite memories.
