Aaaaah, "my" lighthouse! I've loved it ever since we started visiting Copper Harbor when I was 10. I once embarassed my husband in a gift shop by pointing out that the replica of the lighthouse was wrong - there are only 2 windows on the one side instead of 3. The sales clerk overheard me and took all of them off the shelf to send back! (I was told by my very embarassed husband to keep my mouth shut next time!)

p.s. Anyone know where to get permission to walk out on the road like we used to before all the "No Trespassing" signs went up?

home every summer. I love walking the shores.

I have been to Copper Harbor many times with my family. Have never gone to the Lighthouse. It is one of my want to do things along with spending a winter in the Copper Harbor,Calumet area. What a wonderful part of Gods world.

I probably shouldn't answer Rose about the road, because I only live here, and I'm not part of the Norland Association board of directors, but I think perhaps a lot of people don't understand the situation with Lighthouse Road. The road is a private one, owned (and maintained, by the way) by the property owners who live on it. The "No Trespassing" signs were erected as the area began to get built up, to keep out people in ORVs who wanted to use the road as a race course, and others who preferred to drive to the lighthouse rather than take the boat (and pay). It is also true that many homeowners are big city people, with a natural suspicion of people passing their houses, which may be unoccupied. Rose may have been a careful and polite walker, but I have heard many stories about people who walked or drove along the road and who stopped, walked all over private property, picked our fruit, and even peered in the windows of the houses. As a result, the Norland Association posted the "No Trespassing" signs, and the only way to legally use the road now is to be a property owner or know someone who is. I'm sorry.

My Dad & I walked that road many times in the 60's. It is one of my wonderful memories of Dad & the great times we always had when we were in Copper Harbor.

Sharon- It is too bad that things come to this. We owned property in Houghton, and my dad posted it as Private, No Trespassing, but still people would ignore the signs and go all over hunting, off-roading, and as you say picking fruit, destroying things. And if my dad went out to ask them to leave, people would ask, well, who are you. He would tell him, well I am the guy who owns the place. He would allow the MTU geology dept on the place as they never took advantage and asked permission first.

On that same property, there had been an old farmhouse which when the family left for the Detroit area during WWII, people broke into the house and basically stripped it of all the furnishings, especially the antiques.

Also, just because someone isn't in current residence, doesn't mean that someone doesn't own the house or property. Some people own summer homes.

I know, Linda, so did I - with my mom and dad, both of whom are just fond memories now. And I remember saying, "boy, would I like to live here!", little knowing that my dream would one day come true. That's why I said I'm sorry things are the way they are now. But we all have those wonderful memories. I don't know when you walked it, but we always went in September, and walked to the lighthouse on a sunny, crisp fall day, and I can still visualize how it looked.

Wow, great shot of the harbor and light. I've been to Copper Harbor many times, but never to the light house. I hope this year I'll visit it. It is too bad many people don't follow the basic forest rules. Walk peacefully amongst the beauty. Leave only footsteps, take only memorys, and photo's if allowed. I feel a lot of mankind needs a good boost of respect training. I leave this Saturday for the most relaxing 2 weeks I get all year. Tell those Thimbleberries I coming and ready to make some jam!!! :)

We visited the Copper Harbor lighthouse about two weeks ago, and I can say with all honesty, I have never been in a more beautiful spot. My bicycle tour through Scotland and the Netherlands took me to some gorgeous vistas, but little did I know on the boatride to the lighthouse that I soon would stand in the most breathtaking spot of all. The paintings and photographs are all fine, but nothing can do justice to it. Can't wait to return!

What beautiful lighthouses. I grew up in the UP on Lake Michigan, but have lived away from there for over 26 years. I always miss the Great Lakes in the summer. I have good memories of growing up in the UP.

After living in Copper Harbor for many years (20 plus years ago), I too am saddened that the lighthouse is no longer open to those of us who want to go by foot. However, we must respect the privacy of those who had the good fortune and insight to buy a piece of that heaven long ago. I have seen many time where people who are on vacation seem to "leave their brain at home". Enjoy the boat trip, it's also a great way to go. There are others place in the Keweenaw open for a good hike.

I, too, have fond memories of walking out to the lighthouse. We were always respectful of nature and other people's property, but I know there are too many people who aren't. We generally don't take the boat trip because it is somewhat costly, if I remember correctly from the last time I was up there!

COUNTDOWN--9 days 'til I get to see the Copper COuntry! :) My friend is 100% yooper and we are coming up next week! Can't wait to see it!

Visit the Michigan Historical Center's Fort Wilkins pages and take the on-line minitour of its Copper Harbor Lighthouse exhibits. It's closed for the season, but this is a good way to get your off-season lighthouse fix!

water taxi ride aboard a 26 foot US Navy motor whale boat each way from and to the Copper Harbor Marina. This gives you a full hour to enjoy the guided tour and examine the maritime exhibits along with Ft. Wilkins well appointed 1849 residence/museum and 1866 lighthouse done in turn of the century antiques.
