Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 08:18 am:

After a colossal thunderstorm last night across the Keweenaw, this was how sunrise looked here in the western U.P. But - surprise - this is actually a sunset, from the east end, over at Trout Lake. Thomas Simpson captured this beauty, apparently on the other side of the lake from which he supplied the Trout Lake moonrise over a month ago.

I have a personal memory from 30 years ago around Trout Lake. My buddy Steve Siegwart and I spent the night at his folks cabin, and then we tooled across some of the backwoods trails in his old beat-up Dodge Dart. Way out in a field in the middle of nowhere, the engine suddenly went dead. After a few minutes of checking under the hood, we concluded it wasn't getting any gas. So we traced the fuel line back to discover... THERE WAS NO GAS TANK!

...next time Thomas Simpson sends a shot from Trout Lake area, I'll tell you the rest of the story :o)

Another WOW!!! I love how the clouds reflect in the lake. Thank you so much for starting off my day. The Pasty Cam is the 1st sight I go to every morning after I check my email. It is better than reading the newspaper down here.Keep up the great work!!! :) You are keeping us trolls sane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What an incredibly refreshing way to start the morning here in k-zoo. Thanks for that breath of the freshest air on Earth. Counting down the days until I get up there to enjoy it all in person.

By YWB living north of Detroit but not too close to Port Huron or Flint for that matter perhaps somewhere in between say Imlay City - ish on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 02:03 pm:

I think if we use the abbreviation YWB many of us can shorten our handles.(OK so I am not one of them). Yes, YWB is yooper wanna be...This is a beautiful "sight" Charlie - thank you...

By Yooper Wassa who actually lived in Port Huron and has been to Detroit AND Imlay City on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 02:38 pm:

I was a Yooper! Didn't necessarily want to be, but enjoyed several years at Michigan Tech. The wilderness is beautiful, as this picture attests. This reminds me of the year I lived in a house trailer just up the road from Dollar Bay and we would canoe out on Torch Lake. The northern lights use to be spectacular. And the star gazing was great, too. There is nothing quite like it, especially here in Chicago.

P.S. Order some pasties, there excellent!!!

WOW WOW!! This site only gets better and better, just like fine wine. Charlie this would have been a great end of the month picture.

By Holly, Saginaw, MI on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 04:28 pm:

Absolutely gorgeous!! Makes me wish very badly that I was there now. I will have to wait until my trip in October to Michigan Tech.

Keep up the great work. You really capture the beauty of the UP.

Imlay City? Sports rival. Richmond. This is where I am stuck till all 4 kids are out of High School. One down, three more to go.... Go Blue Devils! :)

Great site! Great photos! Big Question,
Who's got the best Pasty in the Keweenaw?
Will be UP there next week. Staying in Eagle River.

By JEO, Dallas on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 07:48 pm:

Absolutely unbelievable!!! What an incredible shot! We have some nice sunsets in the south, but nothing like this...especially with the lake.
The beauty of the Copper Country really is amazing.

I don't know if I will make it up to the UP again this year...haven't been up since 1999 and this is the longest that I have been away. When I first left at 18 in 1981 I thought that I would never look back, but I do believe you can take the girl out of the UP, but the UP stays within the girl. I see pictures like this and I feel so drawn to it.

I work at a radio station and right now we are playing "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong and how appropriate!!!

Hey Yooper Wassa...Sorry, yer only an implant.

To be a Yooper, ya gotta be born and raised here. OR, we will adopt after awhile and the passing of a few tests! :)

Best Pasty in Marquette area is only made on Thursdays. You must preorder them. The Big Bay Corner store has the best ones I've had in a long time.

By YWB, living north of the border, south of the Grand Canyon on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 10:59 pm:

Absolutely beautiful. Will be in the UP in 9 days! Cannot wait. Hope the moths aren't hatching, heard horror stories of them last year.

By BWD on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 11:38 pm:

I can't wait, 24 days until I get up there

By envy, CA on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 03:23 am:

Mike - while in the Keweenaw, you've got to have a pasty fresh from Tony's Kitchen in Laurium. In between visits, however, just order from Pasty.com!

By Tim in Oscoda on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 03:33 am:

Tony's are the BEST!!!!

By Sharon, downstate Michigan on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 08:16 am:

Tony"s are the BEST we have had so far.I love the atmosphere at the restaurant. The cookies, rolls, bread and all the specials. I wish I was there right now for breakfast.

By JR, MI on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 09:07 am:

I agree with all that Tony's are the best, but if I had my way I would be at the Soumi bakery right now enjoing breakfast!

By Clamdigger - Jersey Shore on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 09:41 am:

Ah YES,

Suomi Pancakes in the morning and Tony's Pasties later on....... Throws a party in my mouth!

By Grizzly Adams, somewhere in da UP on Friday, July 20, 2001 - 02:15 am:

Grand Canyon YWB, Bugs are really bad. Those horror stories you heard were all true. But it is a necessary evil. Dont let it keep you from enjoying the beauty of da UP. BTW, it is my goal to be a yooper (hopefully) soon. I've already done some pretty, shall we say, unique things. Hopefully I'm close to acheiving that life long dream I've had of being a yooper.

How about a pasty from Lawry's in Marquette, then going to Jilbert's dairy for the World's Best Milkshake??? Yes the U.P. is the closest place to heaven...

By Recent college grad from Western Michigan who wants to be back home in the Yooper. on Saturday, July 21, 2001 - 09:14 pm:

I am going to get an ice cream at the dairy flo in Rapid River and then ride my jet skis tonight yet on Little Bay De Noc. Ah yes this is definately heaven and I am not looking forward to going back to kalamazoo tomorrow. YUCK! I will be home shortly though in a few more weeks. Man I love being a Yooper.

By Liz, Livonia on Thursday, July 26, 2001 - 08:19 pm:

Yes - We always get pasties from Lawrey's in Ishpeming when we pass by to and from our cottage in Twin Lakes. In fact, I just had one for dinner tonight! Unfortunately, these were picked up on the way down state instead of up. At least it's cooled off here now that I don't have a lake out my front door.

Beautiful. Found this pic, searching on google with the keywords "Night+Skies"- the title of my new song. I'm going to use part of this picture, for a little online promotion. Absolutely gorgeous photography.
