Yesterday we shared a view from the Soo, and today we work our way over to Marquette... in our continuing exploration of the land of pasties. Come to think of it, wasn't this overpass labeled "Soo Line"? Anybody remember?

Ah...but the Bunny Bread sign still lives! (...or part of it does, anyway.) You'll find the Bunny gracing the entrance of the U.P. Children's Museum in Marquette.

Since graduation, Jonathan has been taking a lot of pictures in the Marquette area. Of course one must spend much time in a new business area; am I missing something?

Bunny bread! Looked forward to eating it when visiting the grandpartents YEARS ago in Laurium. People down here looked at you kind of strange when talking about bunny bread. But come to think of it they still do when I mention saffron rolls, bread and Thurners turnovers.

Two more months and we will be back up to visit.

Oooh! I vote YES on the lighthouse series, too. I spent the weekend in Houghton at the Relay for Life event held on the Houghton High School football field/track. Beautiful weather & great participation at the Relay. Heard today the money raised is at $104,000 and climbing. We lived about 2 blocks from the Bunny Bread Bakery in Marquette, such a wonderful smell. I had never heard of it till moving there in 1962, but it is now sold in southern Indiana, where we are now living. Brings back reminders when I see it on the shelf. And to see the old trestles coming down, I will miss seeing them when we visit there, it was a landmark I looked for, something from the past.

Ok Ok, I'll share the name. If we have to wait to live in Gods Country, Its not fair for just me to have the name. Lets just put our location of where we live now after the Yooper Wanna Be. 4 more weeks till I leave troll land to spend 2 weeks in Northern Marquette County!!!!!! The old trestles were a great sight to see. You knew you were close. I too remember Bunny Bread. I've been spending just about all my summers from an early teen to now in the Great North.

Not to change the subject but to change the subject, what is going to be the results of the defoliation of the trees by the tent worms? Will the trees recover? What will the fall color season be like? We just returned from Eagle River and when we were up on Brockway Mountain we could not believe the destruction. The black flies were nothing compared to the tent worms.

My wife and I drove up to Copper Harbor last evening, and the hillsides up through the peninsula - across Lake Bailey and Brockway - look like early Spring, with the trees grayish instead of heavy green. The experts in Forestry at Tech say the trees will recover.

Unfortunately I left the Pasty Cam at home, and couldn't get a fresh shot. But we can tell you this: Mount Baldy really is bald!

H***'S Bells, I can remember when Bunny Bread used to be "OUR OWN BREAD"!!! Honest! That was the name!

Bunny Bread was a fitting name, because (Mama used to bake bread for us) it looked like cottony bunny tails. One could fold it many times, squash it down flat, and make a square to eat with a little dab of jam...sort of a Playhouse Tea Party's hors d'oeuvre!

I always thought Bunny Bread was a Yooper special, but several years ago I was in Greensboro NC and passed a Bunny Bread bakery. Made me home sick. But not for much longer

Does anyone remember fried baloney sandwiches with mustard?? Had to be Vollwerth's baloney and had to be Bunny Bread or it just wasn't right.

Just returned from a southern trip and I was surprised to find Bunny Bread down south in Tennesee and Georgia! I thought that was a Yooper Special! Bought a loaf and put it in camper freezer to surprise my daughter who is crazy about the U.P. and remembers Bunny Bread from our many trips up North.

The bakery in Marquette was Our Own Bakery. Bunny Bread was one of their brands. The Bunny label was probably sold or abandoned.

If this is the trestle over Front St. heading into downtown, I was sad to see it go. How I remember the welcoming sight of it proclaiming Marquette the "Home of Northern Michigan University" each time I headed back to college! I do, however, have it immortalized in the back of a photo from an NMU photography course I took back in my freshman year of college. 1991 probably doesn't qualify as a "historic" photo but perhaps it could be submitted for the Pasty Cam archives!

Very sad to hear about the tentworms making their way up to my favorite part of the world - I hope they don't do too much damage.

I for one will miss the old trestle. It was part of the Old Marquette that I fell in love with.

I a like the yooperland a very much. It remind me of Japan. The peole so so nice and help me get arond the yooperland. A very special thank you for a great vacation!

I'm new to the internet and have no idea how this public posting works, but here goes. (I found this public posting while doing a search.) I wondered if anyone might be able to tell me where I could find this jigsaw puzzle. It's a map of the Upper Peninsula titled "Yooperland U.S.A." By Kathy Waters, Copyright Da Yoopers, You Guys Inc.
I've tried the Tourist Trap, the shops in Copper Harbor and Calumet and to no avail. The puzzle has each county in a different color and lists all the teeny tiny towns in the U.P. A great gift for those who have moved away from the U.P. It was given to me as a gift and every friend and relative of the U.P. wants it! The store in Calumet no longer carries it and mine is going to end up missing if I don't find 10 copies for relatives. Hope you can help.

Hi, this thread is probably long over, but I wanted to ask about the Bunny Bread factory in Marquette, Michigan. We lived in Marquette twice during my childhood while my dad was stationed at Lawry AFB, and I remember so well the Bunny Bread factory with it's large bunny sign that lit up at night. My husband and I just visited Marquette this week, my first time back in 26 years, and we drove all over town searching for the Bunny Bread factory, and could not find it. I seem to remember it was a pretty brick building with trees near it, and maybe a small river behind it (?) We used to drive by it a lot and it was a landmark, and now part of my fond memories. Was it really torn down? Wasn't it a historical building? Why was it torn down? Thank you for answering my questions. I was just so curious to find out what happened to it. Angela
