I have a picture very like this. Mine is marred by the presence of a goofy looking guy sitting at the base of the statue. Wait a minute...that's me! It is Wakefield all right. Peter Wolf Toth was the sculptor.

I knew it was Wakefield IMMEDIATELY. It's the one site along our trip back home (from Washington state), that really makes me FEEL like we're almost home. My old boss, Dr. Victor Lepisto, was from Wakefield originally so I always think of him when we pass by there.

Yup, you're right... it is the Indian head at Sunday Lake in Wakefield. I've tried to capture this shot many times in the past, but always had the sun in the wrong location for the camera. ;) Daryl

I agree with all above who said it was Sunday Lake in Wakefield; drove by it many times on my way to Duluth while I was going to college.

Growing up, our family drove by it so much that my sister and I nicknamed it "Jim-Bob" after our grandfather, whose teeth resemble that of the Indian...he wears dentures. (We were kids, what can I say!)

I live in Minneapolis, My fiancee in owns Flint's Bar in Ishpeming. I make the Mpls to Marquette drive at least twice a month. My kids and I always know we are on the home stretch when we pass the "Big Indian" at Sunday Lake! Next to the "Big Skier" he's our favorite Landmark!

afternoon. Kilpela and Friends and Mike and Marlene Rydeski, for Suomi Kutsuu's 39th anniversary dance. Sure was a nice time! But I didn't see the Big Indian. Must be on the other
side of the lake, huh?

I am originally from Ironwood. I live in Memphis, TN now. My father is a wood carver and actually helped Peter Wolf Toth carve this Indian! Toth actually has done an indian carving like this in nearly every state! He does them according to the type of indians who once lived there.

It keeps the Indian culture alive!!!!

I watched Peter carve a statue like this in Hillsboro, Oregon. I bought a small carving from him one evening.

My husband and I saw one of Toth's Indian sculptures last July in Portland, Oregon. Just 2 days ago, we saw the one in Narragansett, Rhode Island. We hope to see many more as we travel about.

Jane, again, with a correction. It was not Portland, but Astoria, Oregon where we saw our first Peter Toth sculpture.

We have one of Peter's carvings in Dunkirk, New York.My wife and I watched him carve it, in a tree that grew in our neighborhood (in 1973).

There is another Peter Toth Indian Carving on the grounds of Prince William Sound Community College on Pioneer Drive in Valdez, Alaska. My son and I were touring the state when we came upon it. It's enormous! We thought at the time it was strictly Alaskan. Hardly!

We tracked down Toth's statue in Williamsport, PA today. Spectacular! Also would like to know if there is a list or map showing all sites! I found a list at GreenvilleOnline.com but it does not give much information.

It has an "almost complete list" of Whispering Giants locations. The only one I've found -- so far -- that isn't on the list is the one located in Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, Canada.

I'm glad others have finally started noticing the Whispering Giants. I found my first in 1977 in Atlantic City (this one is no longer) and have searched them out as I've traveled around the country ever since. It's been an interesting side light to my travels. I have photographic records of over half of them.

His works are beautiful. My wife and I just happened across his working home studio as we were traveling down in Florida. We were peeking over the fence just as he pulled up on his motorcycle. We talked a bit and purchased one of his small sculptures. I think everyone should make a special trip to 102 Arthur Ave - US 1-S, Edgewater Fl. It is really interesting to see all the work he has done, just sitting around the yard and hanging on the fences. He has a lot of really wonderful sculptures. He also happens to be a really nice guy.

We have traveled around the states by motorcycle looking for Peter's Indians. We have photos of 28 in our collection. Watched him carve the first PA Indian that is now at the PA Welcome Center on I-80 near the Ohio border. Also saw him carve the 2nd Ohio Indian in Akron after vandels destroyed the one in Sand Run park. Hope to add one more in a few weeks in South Carolina. Peter, nice to see your above post. Hope to get to Florida to see your carvings there, soon.

I am collaborating with Peter Toth to write a "coffee table" book that features photographs of each of his statues. The book will include his biography, background information about the the tribes the statues represent and anecdotal accounts of the sculpting of each statue.

Hi, I have been trying to find the exact location of the Whispering Giant in Forest Park, in St. Louis, Missouri. Forest Park is a big area and no one seems to know where it is exactly. Any help would be appreciated.

Peter Toths work is amazing! The carving of Glooscap in Bar Harbor Maine that was done 20 years ago was taken down last Summer due internal rotting and was ready to fall over. The good news is I worked for a year restoring it and it is now standing tall again, totally restored. It can be found at the Bar Harbor Campground on Route 3 Bar Harbor Maine, just five miles closer to Bar Harbor. It is still right on the road for everyone to enjoy! I have many post cards of Peter's work and several of his books if anyone is trying to find information out about locatations of carvings. It is amazing how he dedicated so much of his life to honor the American Indian's by creating these wonderful landmarks! THANK YOU PETER TOTH!

Sweet Little Susie, is a nickname given to me 3 decades ago, by peter and our bond remains today . This wonderful man continues to devote his life to the Whispering Giants and the maintenance to keep the lasting beauty. I can only suggest that everyone see and enjoy his truly amazing works of art across the U.S.A. and if possible visit his working studio in Edgewater FL. as he works daily on smaller pieces. Hi, we live in Akron,Ohio about 2 miles from "Rotaynah" that Mr. Toth created. It was dedicated in 1985 and is a beautiful tribute to the American Indian. We have also seen the one in Ocean City, MD. It makes me feel so proud that someone from our little town has done such awesomw work !!1 Sue

I moved to Edgewater, Florida in May of 2004, just in time for the three hurricanes that hit the area. Peter's studio is on the main drag in town and he has some spectacular stuff that I would admire everytime I drove by.
I was having a number of storm damaged trees cut down and it occurred to me how cool it would be to have him carve something out of some of the oak stumps rather than have them ground up. I stopped and chatted with Peter and he agreed to come take a look. He is nearing completion of two works now.
One is a small version of a Whispering Giant about 12 feet tall. The other is an eagle in a full dive. Its about 7 feet tall. Really cool!
It has been fun watching him create. He is really an interesting guy to talk to. We have discussed Sociology, Economics, Politics, etc. Turns out he likes to play chess while he works.
A reporter from the Daytona Journal came out and did a story. Its front page of the local news section, 2/24/05.
I really got more than i bargained for with these sculptures. They are beautiful and skillfully done. They are thought provoking and initiate some great conversations. Most of all, I have found a good friend and a challenging chess opponent.

I am so glad I found this site. I was digging through my old pics and saw some taken in Ocean Springs, Mississippi back in the early 70s. It was then and there I first met Peter Wolf Toth and saw his great works of art. I remember the whole town seemed to be present. We had the local high school band and even the governor present for the dedication. I moved away from the Gulf Coast in the early 80s, and have lived along the VA/TN line since. I am pretty certain that I have run across another of Peter Toth's sculptors in Johnson City, Tennessee. Please let me know if this is correct, is this a Toth original? I had been scouting out the web sites concerning the sculptor,and I had almost given up hope of finding a site that was still valid. Then I found this one and saw where Mr Toth himself had posted. I had begun to wonder if the artist was no longer sculpting or was deceased. I am very glad to know he is much alive and still creating art.

I was very disappointed when I discovered that the sculpture of "Crooked Feather" in Ocean Springs, Mississippi had deteriorated beyond repair and that a Thomas King was hired in 1999 to build a new one. I havent been able to located any pics of the new "Crooked Feather" or anything on Thomas King except the following article. I am wondering why Peter Toth was not the one to rebuild another. Mr. Toth, if you read this, I hope you will answer, and also if you could, supply us with more sites that we can see your works. Thank you. Debra

The original Crooked Feather was presented to the city of Ocean Springs, Mississippi by Peter Toth in 1976.
Peter is best known as a 'humanitarian' artist with a dream to honor the Native Americans by creating a giant Indian statue in each of the 50 states. Since beginning his mission "with hammer and chisel" in 1971, Peter has donated 67 Whispering Giants (20 to 40 feet
tall) in all 50 U.S. States and Canada. Peter's giant statues are prominently displayed in parks, on museum grounds, Indian Reservations, Interstate Welcome centers, and library and courthouse lawns. The small wood and stone statues that Peter creates at his studio, have funded his travels and are collected by museums, corporations, and most often by "just everyday private collectors."
Time and weather eroded the original hand-carved cedar sculpture. In 1999, repair efforts, due to the extent of the damage were abandoned. Ocean Springs officials chose to replace the 24-year old statue and Ocean Springs sculptor Thomas King was hired to do the job.

Hi everyone, I asked for help in finding the one in Forest Park in Saint Louis and have since found out that is was hit by lighting and destroyed. No wonder I couldn't find it. Also the one in Fort Wayne, Indiana was destroyed by termites. Hope to see a few more on our vacations. The most unique one was in Punta Gorda, Florida. It was two faced, literally. Most beautiful.

We were driving by Peter's Art Museum in Edgewater a couple of weeks ago and discovered all the wonderful sculptures. When we saw his work, we were amazed! So we purchased a very unique Tiki Sculpture (with a fabulous hair do) for our new pool.

If you are passing through Florida on I-95, you should plan to visit his store/art studio. The exit to take would be Scottsmore/Oakhill. Go east about 1 mile. Turn left on US1, and his museum is about 13 miles on the left.

You can see three very LARGE indian sculpture's from the road, and hundreds of carvings. This guy does amazing work and reasonable prices.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Toth on Sunday August 07, 2005 in Punta Gorda FL.

The sculpture located near the Harbor was moved last week to a new location in town from it's original location at the Best Western Waterfront Hotel. The Hotel was severly damaged a year ago from Hurricane Charlie.

Peter is in town to make repairs to the sculpture that was damaged during the move as well as from age. Details of the move can be found in the local August 07 news article (HearldTribune.com).

Look for follow-up in a few days.
