Nancy has the spelling, and the Wenbergs have the green thumb. This type of plant along with azaleas love acid soil, the makers of Miracle-Gro have a product called Mir-acid that is very helpful, especially where the soil isn't naturally acid, as it is in the copper country.

No sharp division is made between azalea and rhododendron as they are Classified by plant taxonomists as Rhododendron. Azalea is the name used for native deciduious species and rhododendron is used for the plants that have large leathery leaves. I had to look this up so I ain't all that smart. Gotta make that computer pay for itself somehow eh?

It was also my understanding that you have azaleas in the southern climes and rhododendron in the northern ones. But I didn't look this up, so could be wrong...just what I remember hearing. Up at UC Berkeley, at their botanical gardens the rhododendrons were the height of tall trees! I have never seen anything like it! That was back in the late 70s. Don't know about now.

I think also that Rododendrons grow wild and azaleas are pretty much a domesticated plant.

I think susan's right. I was once attacked by a bunch of free-range rhododendren in the back country. An azalea would never do that...
You guys enjoy summer back there, I'm up near the arctic circle in the North Sea and it's still mighty cold here!

It looks maybe like a Rhododendron,japonica. There are dozens if not hundreds of native and hybrid "rhodies" Here in Northern California and also the Pacific Northwest,there is a native Rhododendron,bright,dark pink in color. Then we also have the native,Rhododendron, occidentalis, which is the Western Azalea,It is decidious, has very fragrant white flowers splotched with yellow and,or,pink.

The small city of Eureka,CA has a Rhody festival the end of April each year. The kindly doctor who first promoted the festival 35 - 40 years ago,promoted the idea that every home in Eureka should have at least 1 Rhododendron in the yard,and that wish is close to beieng fulfilled. didn't mean to get carried away, but Rhodies are special !!

I have many varieties and colors of Azalea and one Rhodendron in my yard - however the specie Rhododenron is generally found in cooler mountainous areas as evidence by driving down through the Blue Ridge - Appalacian chains, Great
Smokey Mountains. It was a pleasant suprise to see the flower there in Dollar Bay just the same, things like this provide more lift to the Lift Bridgers. Former Tamarack/Calumet dweller.

Love all the pictures of that sweet place - including this one too - and would love to live there :) But my only option is to get married and then settle in Dollar Bay !!! Well, kidding... Well, my understanding is that yes, the two are of the same family but the Azalea is decidious in all but the southern most parts of the country. Whereas the Rhody is evergreen, with it's leaves only curling up through the winter. But maybe everyone is sick of Rhodys and Azaleas and would rather think of the rich mesmerizing sent of those lilacs that are just opening!!

I have a Rhodo in my yard that has gone leggy with branches going every which way,I've been told that it needs to be pruned.
Could anyone tell me when and how I can do this.Thank You.
