Fantastic RHODODENDRON---great to see that spring has sprung in the yoop!

By a troll on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 09:15 pm:

Charlie - check out Nancy's spelling of of the name of that plant compared with yours. Where did she go to school??

Glad to see yous broke the 300" barrier. It's been a great winter.

By nancy sterling heights, mi on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 09:48 pm:

BEAUTIFUL PICTURE, MARLIN--I KNOW THESE PLANTS REALLY DO HAVE BLOOMS. I'VE HAD ONE FOR FOUR YEARS AND HAVE YET TO SEE EVEN A HINT OF A BLOSSOM! IT'S NICE TO HAVE A COUSIN WITH SUCH TALENT--

By Simon, Washington State on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 09:50 pm:

Hate to tell you troll, but Nancy spelled it right...check your webster's...

By Walt, in Ohio on Monday, May 14, 2001 - 11:00 pm:

Nancy has the spelling, and the Wenbergs have the green thumb. This type of plant along with azaleas love acid soil, the makers of Miracle-Gro have a product called Mir-acid that is very helpful, especially where the soil isn't naturally acid, as it is in the copper country.

Hey ya'll, having planted two and a half hundred of them when we lived in Texas, we think we know how to spell the name of that plant in front of Wenbergs:A Z A L E A...

By Marie, Ok. on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 12:34 am:

No sharp division is made between azalea and rhododendron as they are Classified by plant taxonomists as Rhododendron. Azalea is the name used for native deciduious species and rhododendron is used for the plants that have large leathery leaves. I had to look this up so I ain't all that smart. Gotta make that computer pay for itself somehow eh?

By Tim in Oscoda on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 08:23 am:

Didn't know I was entering a science class here! Let alone add in a spelling test! It's amazing what you'll find at Pasty.com! Everyday is a new experience...

By Alice Neilson, Ventura, CA on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 02:05 pm:

It was also my understanding that you have azaleas in the southern climes and rhododendron in the northern ones. But I didn't look this up, so could be wrong...just what I remember hearing. Up at UC Berkeley, at their botanical gardens the rhododendrons were the height of tall trees! I have never seen anything like it! That was back in the late 70s. Don't know about now.

By Alice Neilson, Ventura, CA on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 02:12 pm:

Hey Tim, I also say that a day is not a loss if you have learned something, so consider this day very special!

By john,Dearborn Heights,Mi. on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 03:58 pm:

Hey Marlin, beautiful Rhododendren!! didn't know bout them green thumbs....hehe...some good dirt round there,huh?... :)

By mike, tx on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 04:50 pm:

What a great site. I think its a very pretty flower.

By susan,VA on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 05:23 pm:

I think also that Rododendrons grow wild and azaleas are pretty much a domesticated plant.

By Marc, Norway on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 06:09 pm:

I think susan's right. I was once attacked by a bunch of free-range rhododendren in the back country. An azalea would never do that...
You guys enjoy summer back there, I'm up near the arctic circle in the North Sea and it's still mighty cold here!

By Granny, Garden City MI. on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 12:32 pm:

It's Azalea all right - my Rhoda's still in bud.

By Nita, California on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 01:38 pm:

It looks maybe like a Rhododendron, japonica. There are dozens if not hundreds of native and hybrid "rhodies" Here in Northern California and also the Pacific Northwest, there is a native Rhododendron, bright, dark pink in color. Then we also have the native,Rhododendron, occidentalis, which is the Western Azalea,It is decidious, has very fragrant white flowers splotched with yellow and,or,pink.

The small city of Eureka,CA has a Rhody festival the end of April each year. The kindly doctor who first promoted the festival 35 - 40 years ago, promoted the idea that every home in Eureka should have at least 1 Rhododendron in the yard, and that wish is close to beieng fulfilled. didn't mean to get carried away, but Rhodies are special !!

By North Carolina on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 07:44 pm:

I live on the sunny shores of Whiskey Creek within the sound of the Atlantic Ocean. I have many varieties and colors of Azalea and one Rhodendron in my yard - however the specie Rhododenron is generally found in cooler mountainous areas as evidence by driving down through the Blue Ridge - Appalacian chains, Great
Smokey Mountains. It was a pleasant suprise to see the flower there in Dollar Bay just the same, things like this provide more lift to the Lift Bridgers. Former Tamarack/Calumet dweller.

By CO on Sunday, May 20, 2001 - 10:35 pm:

Hey, any single guys living in Dollar Bay ? Love all the pictures of that sweet place - including this one too - and would love to live there :) But my only option is to get married and then settle in Dollar Bay !!! Well, kidding... You know it's spring time and it really makes you playful. God bless all you good people.

By art and alison on rice lake on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 11:58 pm:

Well, my understanding is that yes, the two are of the same family but the Azalea is decidious in all but the southern most parts of the country. Whereas the Rhody is evergreen, with it's leaves only curling up through the winter. But maybe everyone is sick of Rhodys and Azaleas and would rather think of the rich mesmerizing sent of those lilacs that are just opening!!

By Wenberg $BAY on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 06:54 am:

Hello Friends;
I have a Rhodo in my yard that has gone leggy with branches going every which way,I've been told that it needs to be pruned.
Could anyone tell me when and how I can do this.Thank You.
