So far this year we have managed to have people appear on the Pasty Cam every page. But today, coming down to the end of the week, I realized we only had scenic and historic subjects... and no people. We saw several parties of kids headed for the Prom, but weren't fast enough to grab a shot.

While in Houghton there were lots of people, even a guy on a jet ski in the canal. No matter how hard I tried, none of the shots turned out. Then, on the way home to Eagle River, here was this guy doing his Spiderman routine right up the face of the Cliffs.

Any of our Pasty Cam-watchers ever climb these rocks?

Did any of our Pasty Cam-watchers ever climb these rocks???? Our father,L.W. Hooker,freqently snuck up there to climb, and one WINTER--Carol(nee)Gullstrand do you remember being dragged along on the expedition????- the whole family had to have a wonderful day climbing. Not exactly what someone with severe height fright wanted to do! Loved to explore along the cliff drive, but with my feet planted solidly at the BOTTOM of the cliffs.

Ah've clumb up dem cliffs every summer ah could Master Pasty Cam, once even free-handin' it on a wicked dare, so 'ere's a helpful hint(I 'ope) for dose scalers wit'out stickum' on dere paws.
Say 'bout an eighth mile or so past the Gratiot, travelin' Nort'Nort'East on your compass t'at is, one can find if one closely looks on one's left, a well-trod trail to the top.
Viz'lize it as a courteously mowed pickup-size rectangle of short grass cuz t'at's what da trailhead 'ppears to be.
Don't have to be no Johnny Weismuller to endure it's altitudinous demeanor neither!
I recall one spring, early '70's, when a bunch of us Toots Sorel'd it up dere tr'ough deep snow and t'en slid down(like April fools)on da slipp'ry backsides of our ski jackets only to find ourselves beachin' up at the mouth of an unplugged crypt leftover from some subterranean copper enterprise of a now distant century.
I'm t'inkin' you can ferget da danger of snowboardin' Mt. Bohemia eh, cuz t'is schuss t'was what you'd bloody call EXTREME!

Wait a minute. Isn't a "spelunker" one who explores caves???

You're right about 'spelunker'... just a couple hundred yards from the spot above, you will find a cave which appeared on the Pasty Cam back in '98:

As a warning to those who would scale the cliffs without ropes or REALLY knowing what they're doing, my husband and I have twice gone on calls to rescue those so foolish here in NE Oregon. For one, we got to the kid with only minutes to spare. He'd been clinging for four to six hours and hypothermia from a summer thunder shower and fatigue were setting in. He would not have held on much longer. So, kids, not to spoil your fun, but don't try this at home. Sophomore year at Tech, climbed up the face of one of these with about 8 friends (just off of Cliff Drive). No ropes, no sense. About 2/3 of the way up, rocks started getting really slippery and moss covered. Stable foot holds got to be fewer and further between. We climbed up in a row and the people toward the bottom got the real treat of dodging large rocks everytime someone above them dislodged one. Looking back on it, its hard to believe that we avoided even minor injury, let alone serious injury (The penalty for failure was very high). Beautiful view from up there though (we walked a trail down). Sadly, its not the dumbest thing we ever did up there (we tried spelunking too, among other things). Luckily , we all lived to tell.

I recall rapelling down these cliffs one beautiful spring day while I was a student at Tech...we went down one at a time, and had all the appropriate safety gear....Lots of fun!!

Ahh yes, I will soon be climbing these cliffs on a daily basis this summer. We recently acquired all the gear we need and took a class in rockclimbing here at college. So, yes I am glad it's not quite a populated area. See ya this summer.

Yeah, I remember climbing those cliffs. It was a whole lots of fun. It was probablly about three years ago now...when I was in highschool at Hancock. I went with a couple friends. We spent all day climbing, and then repelled down later. It was the first time I had ever rock climbed, and we climbed 170 feet straight up. It was so much fun though , i would love to do it again. Such a rush!!
