The terrain at this location has changed drastically since 1890. There is no longer a gulley, but the church building and many of the houses are still standing.

Where do you think today's retro-Pasty Cam is pointed? And what is the name of the business located in the old church?

By Becky, IN on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 09:08 am:

I'm probably WAY off, but I think it is that shop in Lake Linden that sells copper gifts. It's accross the street from the grocery store with the name I can't remember right now.

Now, my guess is that we are looking at Hancock, and the church now houses the car dealership that has the cars parked in the top floor. Can't think of the street name, but it is the main drag that leads to the bridge from downtown.

By Mina Beck on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 10:42 am:

Well, I'm pretty sure it is Hancock, facing East Hancock, because that looks like my house just to the left of the church. (The big house to the right used to house the ISD? and Dick Kahn's house has the white tower at the far left.) I'd say the first floor of the church is now the base of Dave Dow's Marathon Station.

(P.S. Yours is my favorite site, and the comments build on the special community that is the Keweenaw.)

I think that it is in Pelkie near the Pelkie co op.

By julie IN on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 05:33 pm:

I don't know what the business is but here is another vote for Hancock. Impossible to be Lake Linden, the terrain would slope down to torch lake. Pelkie Co-op?????

I don't know what the name of it is now, but it's that bar on the NW corner as you turn to go up the hill into Downtown Hancock - 'I think'

By Joan, Florida on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 07:47 pm:

Greeting from Florida. My guess is Dave's Marthon in Hancock.

Also, years ago it was Brunos Gas Station

holiday station in hancock

The Library in Houghton (not the bar)? Possibly looking NorthEast towards where Burger King now sits about where US 41 splits. Just a guess.

You should have a now picture. Just to show how much things do change. Yet stay the same.

By Judy, MI on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 10:09 pm:

Because of the hills in the background, I don't think it could be Lake Linden. My guess would be top of the hill off the bridge in Houghton.

By Jim on Thursday, April 26, 2001 - 10:30 pm:

It's Dave's Marathon.

By Den Kemper, Hancock on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 05:38 am:

My guess is Dave's Marathon in Hancock...

By PJK SWMichigan on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 06:12 am:

St. Mary's in Calumet---now a warehouse.

By Phil Verville III, Green Bay on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 09:19 am:

It is Dave's Marathon on the corner of Dunston and US 41 in Hancock.

By Tim in Oscoda on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 10:00 am:

Another vote for Dave's!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 10:05 am:

Congratulations to all who identified Dave's. I personally would not have guessed it because of such a deep gulley.

If you look at Friday's Cam Notes, we have a little animation of then and now.

By Ken from da UP on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 06:55 pm:

When I was a kid, it was Bruno's.
