We've reached the time when the pure white of winter is gone and the green of spring hasn't arrived. Makes for some dirty looking snowbanks. Today's Cam is aimed at some in the yard of "Little Gippers" Child Development Center on U.S. 41.

Our thanks to the Cam Watcher in Idaho who provided the comic book cover from 1950. The legend of George Gipp lives on.

Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have regained control of Pasty Central from Hans the Hacker. What a weekend!

A little over a year ago, while gathering oral history about the Italian Hall, I had a chance to talk with a 95 year old man, named Archie, now living in Detroit. Somehow we got talking about George Gipp and I will never forget how Archie suddenly had such vivid memories of seeing George Gipp around Calumet and Laurium when Archie was 10-12 years old and George was the ultimate hero. Talking of Gipp in the candy shop, Archie made Gipp huge, as though Archie were once again a fourth grader. Describing Gipp in center field in the late 19-teens, Archie said, "He ran like the wind."

To Mary, Betty, and several dozen folks who emailed me about the tunnel on last Friday's Pasty Cam:

In fact, this is the tunnel under M-26 at Great Sand Bay. For many years we have lived just a few miles from this spot, and I wasn't aware the passage existed, far below the road's surface. On one side it opens into a swampy woods, and the other end steps out overlooking the shore of Great Sand Bay. Truly GREAT

Hey, I'm from Calumet, you guys should check out the Opera Children of the Keweenaw, by Paul Seitz. It world premered about 2 years ago, and is the closest representation to what actually happened that I can attest to. If you need a copy, e-mail me.
