Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone. It was a
lovely day for a parade today in downtown
Hancock this morning. It was about 36
degrees and the snow is melting fast. It must
be the luck of the Irish.

I was born and raised in Hancock, Thanks for the pictures, I wish I was there today.

There is a fascinating paper on the lives of Irish immigrants in the Copper Country, authored by William H. Mulligan, Jr. He sites Keweenaw celebrations of St. Patrick's day during the Civil War, and one incident in particular where an Irish priest used a horse whip to break up a dance, because it fell during Lent. Click the link above for an interesting glimpse of life in the U.P. during the 1860's.

...then come back and order some pasties to celebrate Spring's arrival next week :o)

Some of my ancestors may have came from Ireland, but who can be proud of a people who claim to be Protestants and Catholics (but not Christians) and that have been killing one and other for over two hundred years. No wonder Lepracauns(sic)stay in hiding. Let us all be proud of our origins, even though many of our actions are a disgrace to the human race.
Father we thank thee for this day... may we enjoy better ones and live in peace.
Amen

A friend of mine--a Lutheran pastor--would wear orange on St. Patty's Day. I guess it's the color for Irish Protestants.

Watch out for the green beer--it mighty be moldy! :-)

What's da UP doin' fer St. Urho's Day?
