Keweenaw thrill seeker Paul Roberts walked about 250 feet out on the ice to check this formation. The Pasty Cam caught him carefully testing his footing, as there was some undulation of the surface... not as serious as they saw in Seattle this week, but cause for concern.

It's like the surface of another planet out there on Superior: caves and crevasses, cracks and even open water. This crystallization appears as though there was a sudden cold snap when surf was up.

So far on the Cam this winter, Paul has been snow shoeing, roof sledding, and now - ice surfing. What next?

I remember as a young girl going to McLain Park during the winter and seeing a wave just like that. I was so amazed and I will never forget it. I always tell people that on Lake Superior the waves freeze while in motion.
I wonder what Paul will do next. The roof sledding takes the cake. Too funny. Tell him not to quit his day job.

I too try to share with friends in Alabama, they wonder why do people have to even live there, are they being punished or something ? (to funny). Thank God it's not for everyone !!!

Yes, I show the pictures to my co-workers, and all they can see or think of is how COLD it looks, they seem to miss the beauty of it all! Now this one of the frozen wave is fantastic, and maybe they can appreciate it since the waves on the Pacific are a daily sight here. I have told them that the waves get really high. Now they can see for themselves.

I drive to work in Santa Barbara along the ocean and one of the surfers sometimes asks if the surf is up, or how did the waves look. Now this is a wave!

I LOVE to see Paul out there. Seeing the pictures helps me to know he is still alive after the adventure. Plus it brings him a little closer to home than the 14 hours that stretch between us. Love you my Northern Nomad-Mom

Great picture! I was wondering why Jonathan and Paul were out on the ice, then I looked at George's Eagle Harbor site and it all came together. Seems that the wolves like to go out on the ice in the early Spring. I thought they referred to the four legged type but, having met Jonathan, perhaps that drive extends to the human wolf also. Something to think about? :)
