Actually it's the Jeffer's High School in Painesdale, but students from South Range and the surrounding area attend high school here. It's all part of the Adam's Township School District.Home of the Jets.

Wait guys, there is no South Range High School! Or has something changed in the last few years? My recolection is that there is a Highschool in Painesdale. This room appears to be a carpeted version of the old grammar school auditorium in So. Range.

How can you say that this is the best school around, and what schools were torn down? I MIGHT ADD that Calumet High School and Houghton would compete to be the best schools around. Lake Linden and Houghton are even better than Jeffers.

I say it's too bad they took out the rows and rows of desks in this study hall at JHS! How many of you remember that?

Those of us who graduated from this fine school would probably align our vote with SK. Jeffers High is a Beautiful building and was also a great place to receive an education. There is a rich history to this school as well. The Copper Range Historical Society has had several very interesting and enlightening articles on Fred and Cora Jeffers in their Newsletters. All of you alums. look for the back issues and enjoy.

Wow, as soon as I saw this picture I was brought back in time. When I first walked into the study hall it was a bit intimidating. Through the years however, I found a real comfort there. In the 70's it was a place to gather before the first bell rang. During lunch hour you could find the boys playing poker, some of the girls goofing around on the stage and various groups talking and laughing...unless of course it was one of those beautiful copper country spring or fall days, then the study hall would be as empty as this picture. Does anyone remember Mr. Witting's 3rd hour study hall? That was the best!

I haven't seen this sight since 1963, the year I graduated from Jeffers. I remember the room being full of desks and how daunting it was when I transferred there from tiny Heikkinen School in Toivola. I didn't know how I'd ever find my desk and then remember where it was when returning from classes. We all gathered there when the day began and when it ended. Sometimes if it was noisy, Mr. Davis would shout from the front "THIS IS A STUDY HALL!"

I once had a part in a school play on that very stage but I have no recollection as to what it was about or the title.

I loved my four years at Jeffers and felt I received a good education. The two people who most influenced my life were teachers. One was my K-3 teacher at the Heikkinen School (Ingrid Wiitala) and the other was Edith Redeker who taught the commercial courses at Jeffers, both of whom I visited in my adult life. Edith Redeker would scold us in typing class if we had our legs crossed. She said if our legs are crossed, our brains are crossed. To this day, I do not type with my legs crossed. Does anyone remember her?

I remember this study hall very well. I graduated from Jeffers in 1961 and I was in a few plays there myself.

Lake Linden High has not been renovated per se, just the surrounding exterior to add a walkway for the new elementary school. Was there a year ago and it looked the same. I must say that since I graduated (in 1984) it has only gotten better academically. Go Lakes!

My Dad once told me that the late great character actor Albert Salmi(who appeared in a number of 1960's films) was from Sout' Range.
Maybe he once graced(or at least lumbered upon) the very stage which you have pictured at Jeffers High.

What a feeling of deja vu! I didn't graduate from Jeffers but I did go there from 6th thru 9th grade before my family moved. I remember sitting in the rows and rows of desks for study hall and Mr. Gustafson's office just outside the right door. I haven't been in this room since 1971, so it was a real blast to see it. I would have graduated in 1975, if any old classmates remember me.

This is a great picture that brings back some fond memories of good days, not so filled with the stress and worries of laboring for a living. Oh how we all would gather in this room to pondor our futures once we were free from the bond of high school. I too was overwhelmed when I first entered this room and adjoining halls, especially coming from a two room school in Winona. What Change! Yes, to the person who remembers the trees that outline the boulevard...they only added to those fall days discussed in one person's memories. Hail to the Jets....may they live on in our memories!

Thanks for all the Jeffers memories. They brought tears to my eyes, even though I wasn't blessed with a U.P. education. My high school "below the bridge" was quite similar, and it's still there in Grandville.

Jeffers is a good school, Academically it is the best school I have ever attended.

Jeffers is a great school to go to you know everybody and everybody knows you sometimes that's not the best thing but other times it is because there is always some one looking out for you. Jeffers is number 1

I graduated from Jeffers in 1950, in the hey days of Fred and Cora. In those years Fred stood on the stage each morning before classes started and preached a short lesson in morality. One of his more famous speaches was titled "the courtesy of the line", a message that I have remembered all my life and practiced. I played basketball for coach Rapala and became good friends with him and his wife. And of course "Chief", our manual arts and drafting teacher was a special person, humorous and always smiling. A great rabbit hunter.Jeffers and the dedicated teaching staff in the late 40's gave me a head start on life that very few high schools could have matched.

I graduated in 1960. Hampton was the super and Davis was the principal. Trees lined the walks and outlined the beautiful sandstone building . . . Jeffers High School. I, too, miss the rows of seats in the study hall. Nobody played poker, things were a lot stricter then. The "high school play" was presented in the study hall, and I had the pleasure of being part of two of them. I was also a cheerleader and Gary Arvo was the basketball coach. We had a few good seasons under him. It appears with the new renovations proposed, Jeffers will no longer be the school that I remember.

Yes I would have to say the renovations will change things but not that much. I am a student at Jeffers High School now. If some of you out of towners get a chance to come and see it again you should. Many things have changed it seems since you guys attended this school. In the study hall now we had to add two more class rooms so it is about half the size now. Everything else has pretty much stayed the same. We have a great school. You guys don't know what it would be like to come back so if you have attended before come back. Your letters seem to me that you want to come back.
I have also been in the play for the past 4 years and every year I get up in front of all the classes and perform. This year we put on our play about 2 weeks ago. It was entitled "I am a Star" It was about a teenage soap opera star that went to go to a high school in montana to show that she can play a nerd for an upcoming movie. In the end she gets the part of course. It was a great play. It had to be the best in years.
Well our school is a great place and I just can't believe I have only two years left.

Hi to all of you former and present yoopers! My family is from the Toivola,Michigan and Liminga,& Ironwood Michigan area's. My last name is Bakki,my mom was a Taskila from Toivola. Are there any people out there who know of these family's past and present decendant's? The reason i'm asking is because i'm trying to find out if there will be a family reunion in the Toivola area? I haven't seen most of my relatives in 40 years or so, i think it's about time to see the ones i know, and also the ones i've never even met before! Some of my other relatives names are, Niemi, Wiitala, Eaken, Nevenpera, Heikkinen,and probably a lot i'm missing, imagine that!!!
