Several requests have come in recent weeks, asking to see the sights at Mount Bohemia. In her ongoing travels this week, Daryl Laitila snapped these shots of the shelters for the skiers and the Mt. Bohemia sign, with a view of the runs.

Why are they called "yurts"?

By Joe, IL on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 04:14 pm:

Mary as my father used to tell me, "Well they hadda callum somethin"--plus,they look just like yurts.

By Nancy Nelson, WI on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 05:20 pm:

'cause they are designed after the homes of the nomads of the high plains of Asia, and the name for them there is yurts! Got any fermented Yak milk for after skiing?

By WhiskeyCreek on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 06:06 pm:

By ks-WI on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 06:40 pm:

We found the same kind of structures in some of the state parks in Oregon. That was the first time I had ever seen or heard of yurts! Kind of a nice thing though, in rainy Oregon to be able to be warm and dry and still in the state campground.

Yumpin' yimminy! If you yipped and fell down the hill here, it sure would yurt!

Hey! We even have yurts in Chugach State Park outside of Anchorage, Alaska.

The Mongolian travel booth had a yurt at their display just recently at the Adventure Travel Show in Chicago....neat. I also went in one in Istanbul last year. Part of the restaurant was set up as a yurt.

Check out www.yurts.com to learn more about the yurts at Mt. Bohemia, a very interesting structure indeed!

By Ken in Saginaw on Sunday, February 25, 2001 - 10:38 am:

Yurts are big out West where ski touring outfits use them as portable housing...that's the beauty...US Forest Service will allow you, with permit, to usually put them on forest land because they aren't permanent.

Wish some outfit in Michigan would use them here to help folks enjoy the backcountry.

MOUNT BOHEMIA IS THE BEST PLACE TO SKI IN THE MIDWEST BY FAR. WHO CARES ABOUT THE DRIVE? IT'S ALL WORTH IT IN THE END!!!
