As the caption on the main Pasty Cam page implies, the man behind the camera is a student also. If you've been viewing this daily feature for the last 3 years, you have seen hundreds of photos by Jonathan Hopper, who is a senior in Computer Science in his last semester at Michigan Tech University. Jon actually started Internet coverage of the winter carnival on Pasty Central back in the winter of '96 - '97 with screen captures of some video of the sculptures. A year later, with the purchase of a digital camera, we started the Pasty Cam.
If you attended Tech, perhaps your final semester found you with some tough choices: Do I seek a job in my field and most likely leave the Copper Country? Is there a job, a cause, a place for me here in this unique region? Is there possibly a job opening in my field right here in the Keweenaw?
For Jonathan, the answer to that last question is: yes! Over the years, as Pasty Central grew, it required an increasing pool of technical resources. In fact, Jonathan's contribution was key to the creation of the website (automated forms, secure transactions, interactive features). Then in '99, when we became an ISP, it was possible only because of our pool of in-house talent. Jonathan serves as System Administrator for PastyNET's hundreds of dial-in members and dozens of hosted domains. Graduation means he will simply have 1 job now, instead of 2.
...and still there's time to frame his classmates in a glimpse of life from the U.P.
