On the way from Ontonagon to Houghton, you pass through a little village known as Donken. (Home of Donken Donuts?) Recently Dan Urbanski pointed his Pasty Cam at this picture postcard scene, for a good example of the cake-icing effect we see everywhere in these parts.

After a little clearing in the weather, the snow has returned here in the Western U.P.-Keweenaw region. Maybe we'll make that new record yet.

What a glorious scene....framed by the tree branch and the shadows!

Anyone know the history of why barns are painted red?

By Dean Luehrs, AZ on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 09:45 am:

The red pigment is iron oxide which is cheap. It does not have very good covering power so is not used much for house paint (in addition to the gaudy color). Keep up the good work at pasty.com.

A little more coffee to sharpen up your Donken humor, Charlie! Nice barn image.

Awesome pic! Certainly an early leader for next years calendar!!

By Jean on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 06:23 pm:

Dear Dan the barn is nice but what I noticed was the sunshine! I live in downstate Mi. and we have not seen the sun in what seems like a month and we need some soon, so this is the new wallpaper on my computer screen. Thanks for all of your great work .

It's a beautiful photo. Don't remember that scene, but used to make numerous trips down that way while on courior runs to Duluth from the Air Force Station, and remember the Donken place quite well.

While thinking of the AF Station - hope they are not using the Underground bomb shelter there now for sheltering some of the troubled youths. Calumet AFS And Baudett, Mn were the only two Radar facitlies with an underground shelter carved out of the rock.

By Pete, IL on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 07:39 pm:

A question for ALJ, where was the AF station and what type of station was it, when did it close?

Barns are red so they look pretty in the snow!

By Joystick Junkie on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 08:11 pm:

This reminds me of the video game kids used to play. It was called Donken Kong.

By Ken from da UP on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 10:52 pm:

Isn't it sad, like so many barns on small farms
in the U.P. No cows, no tracks in the snow.
Maybe I'm too nostalgic. Really pretty picture, though.

By Betty , AZ on Saturday, January 20, 2001 - 02:41 am:

I agree with Tim from Oscoda. It sure should be on next years calendar. Trouble is, ALL the pictures should be. They are all beautiful.
Thanks for the enjoyment seeing them. It is nice
to look at the SNOW from PICTURES only.....

Oh Betty,,,,,, Come play in the snow, make's ya feel like a kid again !!!!

By Mike ; Pontiac, MI on Thursday, February 1, 2001 - 04:56 pm:

The picture is a brilliant one. Everytime I view it I'm transported back to my grandfathers farm (gone from this Earth over 30 years ago). Not only is it beautiful it grabs the grey matter and provokes thought - thanks for posting it...
