Remember the first time you saw a Great Lake? I do... Couldn't believe that the water strectched all the way to the horizon, and you couldn't see the other side. I suppose that's the way people feel about the ocean - but there's something different about the water of Superior: you can drink it.

Our thanks to Steve Brimm, who was quick enough to track down this small herd of Birch trees grazing on the dunes. (Actually, it looks like they're hibernating at the moment :o)

I can't remember the first time I saw Lake Superior cause I was born and raised UP there.
I do remember the first time I saw an ocean, I was out in Rhode Island for a friends wedding and
I was so excited about seeing the ocean for the first time. What a disappointment!!! Give me THE Great Lake any day.

I remember a story Betty Swift (she had such wonderful stories) told about vacationing in Florida. She asked for a room with a view of the "Lake". The desk clerk said, "Lady, that's no lake, but the ocean." She replied, "Looks like a Lake to me." Miss you Betty.

Picking up on the comment from Kathy in Paavola location. Yes, Betty Swift was a dear. We all miss her. She really liked people and they reciprocated. That Paul is a nice kid himself.

Yesterday I happened to be out in that noisy metropolis known as Gay. There is an incredibly large birch tree out there--must be
2 1/2 to 3' in diameter at six feet off the ground. I think it believes its a maple as it has huge limbs beginning at about 15' off the ground. Maybe the grazing is pretty good on that side of the lake.
Directions: When you exit the Gay Bar, at the bottom of the steps, turn left, walk one hundred yards on Lake Street.

Another picture to make me homesick! We've had snow for a month now, but nothing compares to the beauty of the U.P. It puts a lump in my throat and an ache in my heart.

The ethereal beauty of the Keweenaw haunts those of us who once called it home. How could I ever have left that paradise?

The first time my wife, who is from the Philippines, crossed the Mackinac bridge she couldn't believe that she was seeing the Great Lakes, rather than an ocean. What a sight!
