A shot Dan must have taken by the bay... There's really not that much ice on the open Lake. From our vantage point above the dunes in Eagle River, we see mostly open water. Seems like every few minutes there's a ship headed for Duluth or the Soo.

But it won't be long and all of Superior will look like this - almost like another planet. The ships will have to rest a few months. Late at night we may hear the chilling screams of the coyote pack when they trap a deer out on the ice.

You could fill out a freedom of information act request, for the location of the wolf, but the answer wouldn't be forthcoming, as endangered species and their locations are exempt from those requests.

There are wolves in the UP? And why would you not want to tell us where the picture was taken?

Yes, wolves are in the UP. They are slowly migrating over from the denser populations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. This is great news! I'm extremely delighted to see the revitalization of such an extraordinary species. I know that there is a professor named Peterson at Michigan Tech who studies gray wolves extensively; he might be able to offer information. However, I believe that he is on Isle Royale right now doing research.

Wow - what a awesome picture of the lone wolf out on the ice. Reminds me of the stories I read about the pack on Isle Royaale. That was back in the 50's when I was a youngster & living in Chassell. The pack at that numbered in the 50 to 60 if my memory serves me right.

Saw three wolves last year, the 9th of Nov. I was in a tree. Rattled an 8-pt shed. Noise behind me. One of the three was 50 yrds back.
And last year, one wolf collared the second day of deer rifle was found dead in Minnesota in January.

Nice picture. Have been fortunate now to have seen a wolf on two different occasions. Both sightings were on the road returning to Calumet from Copper Harbor. It was an awesome experience as they are beautiful creatures.

I love this site! If I can't br there in person at least I can see the UP on the webb!

saw a wolf near watersmeet last year.beautiful to see, but if you hunt for deer or bunnies it can be somewhat disheartening as prey animals become very scarce in the presence of predators.
