When visiting Copper Harbor, if you're looking for a place to 'set a spell' and contemplate the deeper things of life, then Karla Korpela shows us the perfect spot. Located on First Street, the hand hewn log chapel, Lady of the Pines, was constructed entirely of pine logs, with the baptismal font and candlesticks hand-crafted from local pine. The interior is quite unique and gives one a feeling of peace when you drift through the doors. Looking at the outside picture, then the inside, brings to mind my Mummo and the little rhyme she taught us with our fingers: Here is the church, here is the steeple, open it up - and there's all the people!

I stopped in this chapel when I was in the Copper Country one morning. It is a very peaceful place, and it's nice that it's open to the public at all hours.

By PJF - Petoskey on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 06:46 am:

Good Morning All. It truly is a wonderful place. I encourage everyone to stop and spend some time there if you are nearby.

By Marko in Columbus on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:03 am:

Brings back memories of the "harbor" . Just down the back street from Zik's place. And that brings back memories of a dear friend that has passed - Curt Twardzik, may he rest in peace.

By Arn Wendt Coopersville, LP on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:03 am:

Even in Gods country, we should take a moment to enter into 'His rest'. God bless you all this morning.

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Beautiful and serene come to mind when I look at the pictures of the chapel.

Good morning everyone and happy 39th anniversary Roxane & Jim!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:29 am:

After yesterday, I hope this church building wasn't put up today for me to go repent in. The A-1 is in the garbage, folks!

By jan, troll on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:33 am:

Either it is very very foggy up there, or there is a problem with the bridge cam....

By DB on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:35 am:

When I lay me down to sleep, i " visit " this place & several others . i'm out like a light.

By Anita from the U.P. on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:41 am:

Alex, Alex, Alex
It's OKAY to eat pasty with A-1! I thought it was a very creative idea and will try it myself since I love A-1 sauce. Now go and get it out of the garbage.....well on second thought....leave it there and buy another bottle. It really is OKAY :)

By Rose, Illinois on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:56 am:

Wow, I've been coming to Copper Harbor for vacations most of my life, and never knew this existed! Where've they been hiding it?!

By Soupy on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 07:59 am:

The bridge cam is fogged in pea soup. It will emerge when the sun burns the fog off, shortly.

Sharon's bird feeder has a relative of those chipminks visiting it right now. All ya' can see is a tail poking out frm the bottom. Pretty funny.

NKR in Mishawaka... Not too many people on this sight probably know what famous college you live by but I do. Too bad last year they were beaten by MOO-U (MSU) and equally sad that you won this year. GO GREEN!

Here is another picture with the 'Lady' of the 'Lady of the Pines' chapel. It really is a wonderfully serene place to visit in Copper Harbor.

I love the Copper Harbor area, will be comming that way next week-end. Can anyone look outside and give me a color report? I have only been able to "HIT" the color once or twice in the past 10 years...what's the odds of hitting the first week of October up there??? Any one help me?

By ace,tx on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 10:01 am:

Had the chance to attend a wedding in the chapel this past summer & it's a very beautiful peaceful little chapel. Good to see that you are still up & kicking yooper 66 ! I know I miss your daily comments & your great pictures of god's country. Wish we could have had more time to visit when we were back home in july, take care & everyone have a great day.

I hope everyone won't mind me adding these pics of another great Church attraction of the Keweenaw. It is another stop that should not be missed when in the area....enjoy!
ch1 ch2
St. Mar;y's Church was built in 1858 in the mining community of Cliff. In 1899 the church was dismantled and reassembled in Phoenix where it was renamed The Church of the Assumption. Masses were held here until 1957. The church now appears much as it did when folks from another century knelt in prayer, a fitting memorial to one chapter of Keweenaw's proud heritage.

Roz GR:

I have a feeling that the Portage Cloud has made a return, but since I slept in this morning, I didn't see the picture folks were talking about. Happens fairly often in the fall though - cold night causes the lake/canal/river to put a lot of moisture into the air, into a cloud that hangs in the valley, but often doesn't expand much past the waters edge. That would cause the bridge to be fogged in, but the campus cams to show a bright sunny day.

I lived in Douglass Houghton Hall on campus for a couple of years, on the side facing the Portage - some mornings I'd get up, look out the window, see the cloud, and figure I'd better dress warmer for walking through the fog. Then I'd walk out the front doors into a gorgeous sunny morning.

Our Lady of the Pines Church
Category: History
Address: First Street, Copper Harbor, MI 49918
When: Open daily from mid-June through September.
A unique, secluded church made entirely of pine logs. The candlesticks & baptismal font are handcreafted from local pine.

By old Kaleva waitress on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 12:16 pm:

Our Lady of the Pines Chapel was largely funded by the Azar Kirkish family. You might recognize names like George (Kirkish Furniture) and Jimmy (Kaleva Cafe). There are plates on the logs with the names of the family members. There are also bulletins and brochures with the history of the chapel. Its a wonderful place for people of any faith to visit. According to the sign, Mass is on Sundays at 11:30 a.m.

By ace,tx on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

One of the most beautiful churches in the area is st. pauls church in calumet & the church at the start of fifth st.(don't recall the name). Went in this past summer to tour it some very beautful stain glass & learned that it's congragation were of the french canadian heritage. Thank you for another nice picture yooper 66 of the church in Phoenix. Do they still hold services in the church at all? Many thank to the kirkish family for such a beautiful church in the harbor.

By MI on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 03:05 pm:

Yes they hold services in the summer months at 11:30 am on Sundays at the Lady of the Pines till sometime in September.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 03:10 pm:

I also thought there were many interesting churches in the Keweenaw and photographed the Lady of the Pines, the church in Phoenix, and St. Paul's in Calumet. I don't know how to insert them here, but if you are interested you can find them in my gallery under the Keweenaw Peninsula album.

By ace,tx on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

Cindy - Thank you for sure that info. with me, I visited your gallery & you did a great job with all the main spots to see up north. We'll try and get to a service there next summer. Thank you for the memories!

By Rose, Illinois on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

OK, I've just figured out where the chapel is, and am feeling embarassed! The picture with the statue out front is what jogged my memory. I guess I've never been inside, though.

Victor P., you're one in a million! Most guys, including my husband (of 25 years) would not want to go through the rigamarole of a second wedding! I was more than happy to get a long weekend at Cedar Point for our anniversary. Of course I would not have been disappointed to go back to the U.P.!

By Dianne, IL on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 05:54 pm:

The cooper plaques on the logs in the chapel are not all of Azar Kirkish family. My grandfather Alfons A. Bonde has a plaque with his name on it in the church. The story I was told was that there was a funding request made of all the property owners in Copper Harbor at the time and anyone making a donation received their name on a plaque.

Hey Karl from Cadillac...I live in the Copper Harbor area, and work there also. Saturday was a very busy day for this little hamlet although the leaves are just starting to reveal their splendor.I estimate 20% leaf change as of today. You'll probably hit close to peak next weekend. Pray you will hit it at the right time.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, September 25, 2004 - 09:00 pm:

Those churches are beautiful. The only thing we have down here that old is the dirt. Thanks for the pictures.

By Dave, Seattle on Sunday, September 26, 2004 - 07:50 am:

Seeing the church reminds me of Fr. Jordan Telles OFM, and all the good work he did there and throughout the Keweenaw. A wonderful Franciscan, fisherman, and a truly remarkable person. He had the heart of a lion and the singing voice of a bear.

By ILMHitCC on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 - 12:20 am:

Nice pics! I've always loved that church. Grew up going there, was married there, too, oh, but a few years back. My family's got a few copper nameplates on a few logs, too. Won't give you them here, though. You'll just have to go and look for yourself! I have pictures somewhere with the original color. Now, where did I put those...
