Brita Haapla has brought us to a calm spot to re-coup before we go on with the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives and enter into the fall phase of life. What I wouldn't give to be sitting in a lawnchair with a good book (or even a bad one for that matter!). Or maybe perched on the edge of the dock, dangling my feet in the river. With the house and the boats decked out in blues and whites, it gives you the feeling of the sky reflecting on them, giving the same colors to those objects, as what's being mirrored in the river. What a good spot to spend the Labor Day weekend. Keweenaw, take me away!

By Rose on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:35 am:

I vote for the good book and lawn chair day !

Good Morning from Northern NJ-

When I first clicked on this picture and it came up, I swear I could see the water gently moving! Thanks for yet another relaxing beautiful pic from the UP.

Did anyone see the 7:02am picture this morning at Sharon Smiths site. What was that on the deck rail?

By anita, mi on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:54 am:

I vote for the lawn chair and the book. Morning from troll land. Have a good and safe holiday.

By maijaMI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:06 am:

Brita: wonderful gallery. Beautiful children! The children make me hope that all of us will send comforting thoughts to the parents in Russia who just lost theirs in the school takeover. And to the surviving children who have to deal forever with the memory. What an absolutely horrible tragedy!

"Mowin da lawn"--great comic relief!

By Carole on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:09 am:

NKR: Sharon has mentioned in her lastest journals about her 'residence' heron that apparently made a home under her deck.

By Tom Horne Toledo, OH on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:10 am:

Good Morning: I would like to be there in a good camp chair with a cup of coffee in hand just sitting there and reflecting on God's beutiful creation.

By SarahK, MI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:14 am:

Does that bird (Heron?) have a little head or is that a house in the distance?

By Tom Horne Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:14 am:

Yes, I know I spelled "beautiful" wrong. Sorry about that.

By Troll Diva, Ferndale on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:17 am:

In about 5 minutes we will be on the road to head to da UP! YEA!! We hear the call of the pastie, and we must answer it. :)

By Troll Diva, Ferndale on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:18 am:

Sorry, that would be Pasty-LOL

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:20 am:

Carole: Just went back and checked Sharons journal, thanks. I've seen a Heron in the sky but not up close. Didn't realize they were so big.

By Karen... on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:21 am:

It's getting cloudy outside...Frances is on her way. Good luck to all you folks on the East coast and Orlando way. It looks like we will get it over here in Tampa when she makes her exit. Not sure we will be enjoying books this weekend, but envy those who will be.

By Traprock,MI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:24 am:

Yesterday was interesting to read everyones views about all the air traffic over our area. What we are seeing are definetly bombers, not commercial jets. Yesterday we heard some but couldn't see them in a blue, cloudless sky and we SAW quite a few. We've never before seen this much activity in the sky. Makes you wonder what it's all about.

By Anita from the U.P. on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:52 am:

What a peaceful picture.....it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George's father kept yelling..."SERENITY NOW!"

By Bill Bier, St. Clair, MI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:23 am:

Looks like a black crowned night heron.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:24 am:

Just went to Toivo and Eino's Pasty Sauce site & see you can now buy the sauce at Meijer's all over Michigan. That kinda takes the fun out of it! I'm still buying mine in the U.P., even tho' Meijer's is 15 minutes away!

By Dennis, Florida on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:31 am:

Power is still on here in Okeechobee,FL but the conditions are getting worse by the minute, over 4 inches of rain this morning already.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:37 am:

to Tom: I think the sticker on the mower says it all, "KLOTZ" that is what the kid is!

Mornin' from West Texas. Cloudy! Liked the bird on the porch. I would love the camp chair, coffee and a book I could choose to read or not.

By Ms. Katie on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:40 am:

How does one find Sharon's journal to read?

By Rose on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:50 am:

I have noticed that as we get older, reading often involves a short nap....Also pleasant in a peaceful setting. Lovely late summer's day in the UP.

By Karen... on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:52 am:

Dennis, keep us posted. We've got things tied down best we can. My son is in Daytona. He's been cleaning up for three weeks from Charley..now this. Ivan's on his way. We must have been bad, huh? We laughed at all the snow they got up north last winter....Shame on us!!

By Mary Ann, WY on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:56 am:

What a nice place to be sitting reading a good book and having a cup of coffee. Then at noon time it would be great to be able to have a pasty for lunch. Sometimes it is even nice just to watch the water. Wish I were there. People that have grown up out west don't realize how nice it is to have a place on the water.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 11:14 am:

Ms. Katie, Click on bridge cam and then the Copper Harbor Sharon Smith web cam and the Journel.

By John M, Kalamazoo on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 11:18 am:

Marsha,Genesee
I agree witcha about it not bein da same to buy Eino and Toivo's Special Secret Pasty Sauce at da Meijer's. On da udder hand, it's a long trip from Kalamazoo to get a replacement. Dey say dat German beer tastes better in Germany - maybe its da same wit da special secret pasty sauce.

By Theresa Colorado on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 11:21 am:

Mary Ann Wy.How true about these westerns, We have been in Colorado 20 years and I still miss the water in the U.P. and our friends here don't get it.. Spent a month in the Upper this summer and spent as much time as I could near WATER... Miss it soooooooooooomuch.. Someday again I will have a home on a lake...........

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 11:53 am:

Mary Ann, WY & Theresa Colorado: Anything west of the Mississippi just doesn't get it. When we say Lake, we don't mean some three acre pond or plia lake; we mean LAKE--you know SUPERIOR!!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 01:27 pm:

It looks like a turkey! (ROFL).

Hey! That picture up there looks EXACTLY like a place my dad and I went to. I'm sure it isn't, but if I didn't know better...

By Dave Hiltunen- Corryton TN. on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 01:27 pm:

I belive you are correct Bill in St.Clair Shores saying it's a B.C.N.H.I have seen them for years at Michigan Harbor Marina on Jefferson Ave.S.of 10 mile Rd.The Heron must be enjoying the last few minutes of nightness,as they are more active in the dark.Russ Emmons would know for sure,as he is a.k.a. The Birdman. No body misses a Lake More then me!I grew up in Dollar Bay,MI.Spent alot of time on Lake St.Clair, and The River.Trust me I haven't seen anything I would call a lake around here.Being a Pisces makes large lakes even more missed by me.
Well I belive my daughter is going to stick it out in FL.on the Gulf side.No takers on my camper offer.I got things to do, as the Mrs. has her Oliver family reunion up in the Mountains tomorrow.

By Theresa Colorado on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 01:35 pm:

Margaret, Amarillo We have Reservoirs here(my Husband built one) and they buy boats and think this great... I grew up on Superior and lived on Lake Michigan for awhile... Those are Lakes....right???

By yooper at college, ND on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 01:52 pm:

All this bomber action could be interesting, someone with a good zoom lens should get some shots of them passing over and post them...

By joanne of White Lk on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 01:53 pm:

the house and Lake look like something i'd like to buy. what Lake is that?

By P., IL on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

Off topic: I can't seem to access the Mining

but no matter what method I try, it always takes
me to the front page for Aug. 30. Thanks!

By RCW on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

I sure havn't seen any bombers lately.Usually watching when we see contrails and most of them are NWA passengers jets from DTW heading over to the Orient. They head up over here, then over ThunderBay ,then over Alaska then to the Orient!!

By Dewey, Jupiter, FL on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 03:12 pm:

It's 3:00PM FRANCES is still blowing however, the eye is just off the coast. Here in Jupiter we have several trees down, one light tower down at Roger Dean Stadium, the others are straining to remain upright. My oak trees have been stripped of their leaves, the house across the street has lost it's roof, the wind gusts have slowed down to 35 MPH (the calm before the backside of FRANCES comes ashore)Here I sit in my office which I am sharing with 4 Florida Panthers, 2 Otters, 3 Bald Eagles, and a cage full of various snakes. Semms my building was the only one secure enough to keep the critters safe. I must say it has been an experience. I hope all you YOOPERS are enjoying the holiday week-end. This troll from down below bridge sure wishes that I were there.

By ert, GA on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 03:17 pm:

There seems to be something new in the bridge picture. A very large rectangle (w/ a 7 on it?) below the bridge on the right. Or am I crazy?

By Dewey- Jupiter, FL on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 03:25 pm:

I see my previous message has been deleted. Did I say something wrong? I just thought I would update the outside world of the conditions here at the wildlife center in Jupiter.
I just wish the weather was as serene as today's picture.

By Rose on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 03:27 pm:

Dewey: I can see your 2 posts. Please keep us posted. And keep safe !

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:05 pm:

Keep the shiny side up, Dewey. God Bless.

Theresa Colorado: Yes ma'am. Born and raised a little on Superior then migrated and finished growing up, getting educated, married and first kid on Michigan. What are they thinking down here?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

Hey, who is that at the airport?

By kosk in Toronto on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

Dewey,

What kind of office do you work in that
someone would think to send you such
marvellous creatures?

Keep safe.

By ert, GA on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:14 pm:

From earlier views, I think Sharon's bird is a Great Blue Heron. Its head looks small because it has its neck down level w/ its body and is looking straight at us. In reality it has a long neck, a reasonable sized head and a long beak. Very strange to have one hanging around one's house.

By Brent, Jus' been mowin' da lawn, near Rochester, NY on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

Hey Dennis in Okeechobee -
Thanks for the update. My mom lives there & I was wondering. I'm not one of those people who clogs up phone lines during an emergency. Besides, she'd think it was a waste of worry.
Keep us posted. My sister in Miami just emailed me. Said it's just raining real good there. They aren't too bent out of shape about this one.

By sue-sue, loveland, oh on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:31 pm:

I am so jealous of anyone fortunate enough to live on the UP but to live on the lake WOW. Love to check your pictures every day or so. I wanna be a yooper but since my health insurance is here, here is where I will stay.

By Danielle Mahoney, Ft. Myers, FL [usually Brighton, MI] on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:38 pm:

Am visiting friends of ours down here in Ft. Myers. We were planning on evacuating by driving 8-10 hours north to GA, but Frances is weakening, will track north of us, and is expected to bring prolonged rain and Tropical Storm force winds to this area. So between that and the hard to find gasoline, we've all decided to ride this one out. Right now the wind is increasing pretty steadily, probably around 25 mph, but it's very black out to the north and east. (If you want to see the view here in Ft. Myers, check out http://www.caloosacam.com.) Lots of people boarded up and headed out early, too many fresh memories of Charly I guess. Hope everyone on the east side of the state makes it through this one okay.

By NKR Mishawaka on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

Danielle Mahoney, Ft Myers - Hope you and everyone else stays safe. Have a sister and family in Dunnellon north of Tampa.

By Dennis, Florida on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 05:07 pm:

Still have power here in Okeechobee, FL I think the worst is still to come but so far we are in good shape. I understand Ft. Pierce is in really bad shape we are 35 miles west of there.
Wish I was sitting at Gulliver Lake like I was 3 weeks ago.

By Gus LL on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 05:31 pm:

Beautiful Shot Brita. Looks like Winkys home on the Big Traverse River. Winky has gone fishing on Lake Superior well past his 90th, birthday.

By Karen... on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 05:58 pm:

It's spitting rain and the skies are cloudy, dark and moving right along. I sure hope the darn thing doesn't stall while over land like it's doing right now out in the Atlantic. The East coast (Broward County) is pretty much without power right now. It's a dark day in the South, that's for sure. Dennis keep us in Tampa Bay posted if you can.

Wish we had some of those Pasties from the UP, YAH! Hello to downstate don.

By Dewey, Jupiter, FL on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 05:58 pm:

5:40 PM Just took a walk outside..the awnings are missing from the building, trees are down everywhere here on our 200 acre site. wind gusts are up to 81 MPH with 115 MPH projected.. The eye is shrinking which means that the storm is strengthening. The cats are restless.. they are not litterbox trained..we will sedate them and the otters for a few hours rest. Neighbor kids are outside playing in the storm, where are their parents?? We are fortunate to have a standby generator system so we have power..but Direct TV doesn't work well in a storm.. so we have to rely on the radio and the internet to track the storm. All in all I am grateful that the storm has downgraded to a cat 2 possible cat 3 soon, rather than the cat 4 that was originaly headed our way. Can you believe that we have had looters already, we managed to catch 3 of them.... I guess they were after our chainsaws and portable generators..So far everyone staying here and their families are safe and sound.. so we will just wait it out and the start the cleanup.

By Birdman on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 06:27 pm:

The bird looks like a turkey buzzard but I think its a Gilly Galoo Bird. The Gilly Galoo is a cross between a Bald Eagle and a Cormorant, Introduced by the DNR, To help control the Alewifes, which were brought in from the Atlantic Ocean in the ballast tanks of the salties. The trouble is, The Gilly Galoo doesnt know how to fly, and the DNR is in the process of teaching it. It could be a long drawn out process.

By Dave on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 07:34 pm:

Inflammatory remarks removed

By Judy Chesaning MI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 07:37 pm:

I thought the Gilly Galoo was introduced by the DNR to eat all those stinky little imitation lady bugs that they introduced to eat something else. Kind of like "There was an old woman that swallowed a fly".

By Brent, in an unusually talkative mood, Rochester, NY on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 07:41 pm:

Dave, Here's a question:
Is this the right place for religious discussion?
There are probably a million messageboards where it would be more appreciated.
Sure, there's talk of politics on occasion and you will read a mention of God or someone requesting prayers. Although most visitors here seem to be intelligent and probably have their own deep convictions/beliefs, Pasty.net just never struck me as the place for that kind of debate.

I'm just sayin'.

By Fishman on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 07:52 pm:

The DNR also introduced a hybrid fish called a Cowallski. It was a cross between a Coho Salmon and a Walleye. They had to teach it how to swim.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:04 pm:

Dewey: Where is Jupiter, FL? I have a daughter in Orlando who evacuated to Clearwater. Another daughter lives in Jacksonville. Keep safe! I'm reading your reports with interest.

By Rose on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:25 pm:

Dewey; I am hearing reports of severe effects in Jupiter. Hope they left you there with a good amount of supplies. Try not to take any more of those walks outside for now! We're watching reports closely in the UP.Stay safe and let us know how you are doing.

By maijaMI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:37 pm:

340 reported dead in the Russian school take over, half of them children.

By Rose on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

Devastating news out of Russia, isn't it? Hard to believe any human being can be that cruel.
Also upseting to see how poorly the Russian govenment is prepared for such situations. No real special forces, no equipment.
My heart goes out to the families who have suffered.

By Peace be with YOU! on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

I guess praying gives one peace of mind. One can run, but one can't hide so what's the use of moving from one place only to find the next place isn't as good as the first one. Yes, it will be the way GOD wants it, but sometimes we would like HIS blessings. Dave, you got a lot to learn. Bless you and yours.

By Patti, TN on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:09 pm:

Bit off from every one else's subject matter for today , but...Congrats, Brita, on the beautiful picture. Blue is my favorite color.

By Ms. Katie on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:12 pm:

As an aside to the hurricane notes...to the girls from Tx.,Wy., and Colo....I Know what you mean. I was raised in Milwaukee and we often went for a ride on Sundays. To either the lakefront or some smaller lakes around the country side. And when I first moved to Illinois as a young bride, I couldn't believe what was called "a lake" around here! A Quarry!? And now when we travel along the water front in Corpus Christie as a Winter Texan" I'm always saying "the lake front" LOL Of course it's the ocean front.

By Karen... on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:17 pm:

Marsha, Jupiter is on the east coast, just north of Palm Beach. They are taking a beating with the storm sitting out in the water. We, in Clearwater, are getting some rain bands, but not too bad yet. Jacksonville should be getting some wind and rain, but that's about it for now.

By Therese, MI on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:29 pm:

I have some older relatives in Miami and Sarasota; and yes, I pray God will keep them safe, although I wish also they had evacuated. They've been through a lot of hurricanes in their time.

Today in the white light and heat I helped a neighbor move 8 yds top soil for a garden, then finished sealing my asphalt driveway. And -- returning to the original subject of this morning -- I have earned a Sunday spent in the shade in my hammock, sipping ice tea and watching the birds. After church, of course.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 09:41 pm:

Thanks, Karen! Hope to hear from you tomorrow with an update! Hang in there.

It is a beautiful area but my wife's family is going to sell off their vacant Norland Trust property on the harbor about 150 yards down from the Copper Harbor lighthouse. Once that is gone, we won't be visiting very often any more. However the Jampot still calls me...
