By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:42 am:

We tend to focus on the late Dan Urbanski's gift of keen eye and ability to capture the moment. But he also had the gift of being able to put words to his photographs to help make them come even more to life (if that's possible!) In the early days of the Pasty Cam, Dan would often send a picture to Charlie with a description of what and where the scene was about, leaving Charlie just a quick cut and paste to complete the day's Cam. The Northern Lights image was taken in the wee hours of the morning, 3:00 a.m. to be exact, while Dan was the 'Artist in Residence' at Isle Royale in 1992. The beauty of the Keweenaw in all it's splendor right outside his cabin door. Yes, Dan sure knew how to live!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:51 am:

We now have a collection of Dan's Urbanski's WOW's for selection in the 2005 Pasty Cam Memorial Calendar, a project suggested by Cam visitors. If you have just tuned in this week, we were saddened to hear of Dan's passing last Friday, and many friends have left messages in his memory the past few days. We have devoted the remainder of the week to revisiting some of his wonderful images of the U.P.

weather pictures are the best!

By JBM .CenterLine Mi on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:56 am:

The top picture is always been one of my favorite. But the third is the most powerful. Both have my vote

By smf in troll land on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:57 am:

Beautiful pictures! Good morning

By Ellen,Sunrise Side,Mi on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:57 am:

Sorry to hear of Dan's passing. Today's photos are outstanding and it is hard to pick a wallpaper. We really look forward to each picture every morning. Enjoy our beautiful country and take notice of the little things that make the world go round.

By anita, mi on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:02 am:

morning all. WOW great pictures. awesome. you can feel the power through the pics.

By j. hammond on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:05 am:

Dan had an outstanding eye for taking that "right" photograph. He will be missed.

His shot of the northern lights reminds me of my younger days as a kid in Midland, MI. On certain magical summer nights we could see the northern lights glowing on the horizon.

By Jeff K, Gaylord on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:22 am:

that's WILD - I have a FRAMED print of the top picture in my living room ! I got the print on Isle Royale after a week long hiking trip - I think Dan took the picture while he was the "artist in residence" there on the isle...

By elm on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:23 am:

There are none of Dans' beautiful fall pictures of the colored leaves selected to vote on for the calendar. He had some beautiful ones.

By Deb - Michigan on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:30 am:

These pictures are absolutely gorgeous. Dan truly captured Mother Nature doing her finest work in God's Country. Capturing either one of these events on film is a difficult task, but Dan Urbanski made it look easy. How about adding Northern Aurora and Lightning to the choices for the calendar? I will order two calendars, one to count the days of the month, the other to frame the pics.

By BT,TC on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:35 am:

WOW...Dan's pic's are nothing short of spectacular..he will be missed!

By ywb/yooperwannabe/richmond on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:39 am:

Check out the frozen berry photo. The one people like for December. Look very close into the large frozen drop. You will see Dan looking back. My favorite fall shot is not included. I love the swirling leaves. Charlie and gang, what a beautiful tribute to a one of a kind man.

By maijaMI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 08:39 am:

NONE of those pictures can lose. It will be an awesome calendar.

By Cindy in Iowa on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:09 am:

Good Morning,
Yesterday, someone had mentioned getting a 365 day, desk-top calendar of Dan's work. If this becomes available or is need of support--you have my vote! His pictures show his love of topic. I am sure he will be deeply missed.
Take care,
Cindy

By Tom, Colorado on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:09 am:

Dan truly captures the beauty and power of the UP. He had a keen eye for God's creation.

By Candy, CA on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:45 am:

You wouldn't think it would be so difficult to choose 12 pictures for a calendar, but they're all so wonderful! Any of these selections will be fantastic! Dan had such a gift, and this is a great way to honor him and help support a cause he loved.

By Ron Syria, MI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:55 am:

Most of the wallpaper I have used on my computers has been a product of Dan's good eye, and a feel for the right shot. I didn't know him personally, but if he was anything like his work, he will surely be missed.

By Patti, TN on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:01 am:

Could we get a fall color choice for the memorial calendar? There are a few beautiful ones in his guest album.

By Tom on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:02 am:

These two lines from Gordon Lightfoot's song "Old Dan's Records" seem to fit the "all Dan" calendar effort -

High above the fireplace, there's a smile on old Dan's face
If old Dan could see us now, I know he'd be so proud

By deni,mqt on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:05 am:

Wonderful photos :)

I agree with Cindy in Iowa about the 365 day calendar but I would like to see it a perpetual calendar to use year after year.

By JM, WA on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:15 am:

I too, love the 365 day calendar idea. I think it'd be a big seller.

By Connie, Ft. Belvoir VA on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:22 am:

WOW! Amazing pictures! Yes, the 365 day calendar would be great! It's too hard to pick only 12 of Dan's photos.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:31 am:

Looking at the choices for the 2005 calendar, its so hard to pick only 12. Lets just add a few months and include them all!

What about the 3 here on today? Can we squeeze those in too?

If we want to send Mrs. Urbanski a card, where can we send it to?

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:36 am:

Today's 4 artist's eye photos are extraordinary!
Please include them in the calendar!

By JIM NICHOLAS, CLIO, MI. on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:39 am:

Actually, I would like to see the top picture on todays post, be one of the picks for the Memorial Calendar. His work is all so GREAT it is hard to choose just twelve. HE WILL BE MISSED.

By Chris K, Lombard, IL on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:40 am:

I, too, would like to see the autumn leaves photo. He took several. I think there are too many winter scenes in the photo selection.

We have a LOT of winter in these parts :o)

Seriously, we have one little technical problem we don't have the higher resolution of most autumn pictures, which would be necessary for printing. We'll work on it.

By Chris K, IL on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 10:45 am:

To me, this is Dan's most exquisite autumn photo.

I agree a 365 day calendar would be great and would be willing to buy! All of the pictures are keepers.

By SAN, CO on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 12:01 pm:

Loved the fall color photo with disappearing road mentioned above, please include.
Would love the long-suffering Still Waters staff to consider a 365 day calendar as well. Lots of folks efforts could be shown and allow the rest of us flung around the globe to enjoy "home sweet home"....please!!

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 12:25 pm:

Hi- How can we get some cards to Mrs. Urbanski?

By K, MD on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Agree - please add a shot with fall leaves for the calendar selection.

Last night I spent hours looking thru Dan's photo's,comments etc. They are all so beautiful and they also gave you a picture of him as a person. I agree with putting out a 365 day calender and it would be great if it could be a perpetual one. The pics today are so beautiful!!Dan we'll miss you.

Dan's "Red Maples" is my favorite fall pic...

By elm on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 02:30 pm:

Fall colors on the Flintsteel is my favorite.

By Anita from the U.P. on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 02:55 pm:

There are so many beautiful scenes that Dan captured on film.....I just voted for my favorites and then I seen the beautiful fall colors on this page! No matter which pictures are chosen for the memorial calendar....it will be an amazing calendar......in memory of an amazing man.

By kc, mn on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

Beautiful picture!! That one should be used for October.

By Bee-Fl on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 03:34 pm:

Bee-Sarasota, Fl HOPEFULLY, Rainbow, would be the cover of the calendar and even and inside month picture...It is not only beautiful, but dictates the beauty of the rainbow promise by God. Also the fantastic autumn picture , loved by everyone and what an introduction to your wonderful fall and Indian summer and the lightning picture is extra special. Have seen many of those spectatular electric shows over Superior but never was able tocatch a photo of the lightning...it is so fast. Great for July or August. Thanks to the vision of Dan.

By M&M. San Jose on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:08 pm:

One of the sights from the UP that I miss the most is the changing of the colors during the fall season. Please include Dan's photos displaying this event on the calendar choices.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

All of Dan's pictures are beautiful beyond words. This one is one of my favorites:

By maijaMI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

I also had the thought about fall color pictures, but I trust that the pasty cam people know what they are doing. If none of these glorious pictures can be in the calendar, they will remain in your computer to access! None of the many, many choices can go wrong.

By maijaMI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:17 pm:

Audrey San Jose: Oh, yes. thanks.

By Chris K, Lombard, IL on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:29 pm:

Hi, again,
While I do like the red maples photo, because he gave it "a softening effect" I get kinda dizzy looking at it.

Any of Dan's autumn shots would be beautiful. There is also the swirling leaves one that is fab, actually taken 8/31/03, I believe.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:43 pm:

Where is that swirling leaves one? Is it the one in the creek? I saw another one that was on a road, and I think it may have been someone else's?? Anyone know what I'm talking about? Maybe Z-Man's?

By shelly on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:47 pm:

I found the one I was looking for, it was Z-mans. Sorry to take up space asking a question I myself answered. Duh! :)

By Mary, Ohio on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:47 pm:

What awesome pictures! I was not familiar with Dan's work in the past. He was truly a very gifted artist and he will live on in his works.

By Ed Belhumer, Escanaba, MI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 04:55 pm:

I just now learned of Dan's passing. Words cannot describe how I feel. Growing up in White Pine in the 70's and 80's with him there to take Senior pics and seeeing all his work grow over the years has been quite the experiance. I have learned so much from Dan in just the few tips he has given me. All the way back to my H.S. days he was always willing to give a few suggestions and/or pointers.. Bless you Dan.. You will be sadly missed by so many!

By Kewe on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:05 pm:

I have been going thru Dan's pictures while listening to the song Keweenaw Light a.k.a.Banks of Cold Water ..Gee I wish I was there on the south shore tonight!
Thank you Dan!

By Steve,Laurium on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 07:16 pm:

does anyone out there have any connections in the St. Pete,Florida? Steve

By Melissa, Lansing, MI on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:13 pm:

I'd really like to see the top 3 pics from today and the fall one posted in the middle of this thread on the calendar. Please consider adding them to the choices. Thank you!

By JIM NICHOLAS, CLIO, MI. on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 09:38 pm:

Think I'll make a second pick. Autumn Road gets my vote for one of the fall months.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 11:06 pm:

Man, this guy was good! These pix he's taken are just unique. Awesome is an understatement!

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 11:53 pm:

I just voted and they are all so beautiful. Wouldn't they make a wonderful coffee table book?

By Susie, Fl on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 12:34 am:

Steve, Laurium....
I live in Clearwater..just a few miles north of St Pete....am there frequently....anythig I can help with?

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 02:42 am:

Ooooo... Fran! Nice idea!

By Susie, Fl on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 03:12 am:

All wonderful ideas....perpetual 365 calendar and coffee table book are two I'd buy for sure! Probably others as well, but those two seem the best so far...

By Carole on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 09:06 am:

I am glad that Fran mentioned the coffee table book. I was thinking the same thing last evening after I signed off for the night and was going to mention it today.

By jjm oregon on Friday, August 20, 2004 - 08:14 pm:

What a gifted photographer. You had a natural eye for capturing the shot as it was to the naked eye..... God bless you and your family. I'm thinking you're taking the wonderful, beautiful and peaceful photos in heaven now. Keep up the good work. Life goes on....we don't end here.

By LE, MI on Saturday, August 21, 2004 - 10:50 pm:

Twelve of Dan's pictures on a calendar aren't nearly enough. I agree that a coffee table book would be a best seller.
