By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:18 am:

Two of our Guest Gallery photographers team up for today's glimpse of life from the U.P.. In the top shot Z-Man, gives the Pasty Cam a look at English riders being given the 'once over' by the judge. Both riders and mounts seem to be standing at attention for this big event. In the second photo, Donn de Yampert takes us through the zig-zagging of a race around the course. With the determined look of concentration on this rider, you can visually see how the horse and rider become one, so as to be at their best in competition. Ride 'em Amber! :->

ATTENTION CAM-WATCHERS: You are invited to help compile the 2005 Pasty Cam Color Calendar, which will become available next month. The theme for next year's calendar will be "A Special Place", with your favorite U.P. scenes, as featured on the Pasty Cam. Along with your nomination, you are invited to give a caption to the picture.

HERE'S HOW YOUR CALENDAR NOMINATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED: First, find a picture you would like to see in the 2005 calendar. A good place to begin is on the Search Page, where you can browse by month through the Pasty Cam archives. When you find a shot you want to nominate, create an email addressed to 2005@pasty.com, with the subject being the date which the picture appeared on the Pasty Cam. Then, in the body of your email, write a short caption.

I asked Toivo to follow these directions, and here are a couple that he emailed:

TO: 2005@pasty.com
SUBJECT: June 18, 2004
----------------------
A real 'fixer upper'

TO: 2005@pasty.com
SUBJECT: January 24, 2004
----------------------
Sledding Cliff Drive

You may submit up to 12 pictures for the calendar, one for each month of the year in 2005. It is not necessary to 'attach' the photo to your email, just put the date on the subject line, and your caption in the body.

Get browsing for your favorite shots, and email 2005@pasty.com today!

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:33 am:

Mary, I'm a little confused about choosing pictures for the calendar. Do we choose from all of the photos from the archives or just from August 2003 since the last calendar pics were chosen?

By Phyllis M IL on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:33 am:

Good Morning - six more days and we'll be there:>

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:36 am:

I tried to be first, but didn't post last! Mornin'

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:41 am:

You may choose any pictures for the calendar, but we try to avoid duplication from previous years, so picking from the past 12 months would be best.

By the way, here's how Toivo's choices would appear in the calendar, if the ones he submitted above were chosen for the 2005 edition:

June 18
A real 'Fixer Upper'

June 18
Sledding Cliff Drive

Did anyone else get some sort of email from mdrew@pasty.com....saying something about a government warning? I don't want to open it in case it's a virus

Note from Mary Drew: The only email you would receive from me (unless you're someone I normally correspond with or know me personally), would be something pertaining to Pasty.com and I always refer to either pasty.com or your Pasty Guest Gallery in the subject line. If you receive anything you are supicious about, feel free to email me and ask if I've sent you something before you open it up.
P.S. to BT, TC~~Don't open it, I didn't send that one!

By Tim, Gr Rapids on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:52 am:

Does anyone know of similar posting sites with photos from other regions?

By Dan & Linda IL on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:56 am:

GOOD MORNING! 3 more days and we'll be there all the way from Chicago. The big water has been calling us for the past 6 years (UP, N. shore MN, Canada) and we are going to the Keneenaw for the first time. I by myself have been to Houghton to fly to the Isle. Just wanted to know though, we are camping at sunset bay and wanted to know if there are any bears in that area? When we stayed in the "porkies" we had a night time vistor almost every night.

By L-O-V-E Pastycam! on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 09:23 am:

To Tim, GrRapids-
As far as I've been able to search, Pasty.com is UNIQUE as a web site. As an armchair/web traveler, I, too, would be interested in any personalized type site with photos of local areas around the US and the World. Always enjoy beauty and humor!

As in these beautiful young riders and horses!
Lucky young Yoopers!

LOO LOO MAE
I HEAR YOU GET ONE DAY OF HOT SUNSHINE AND YOU GO OUT AND GET A GOOD SUN BURN. IS THAT TRUE? YOU WOULD BE IN A LOT OF TROUBLE OUT HERE.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 10:35 am:

I am so thrilled about the calendar!!! I can't wait to search the pictures and make choices!

Y'all have a great day!

By LOO LOO MAE on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 10:37 am:

YOOPER IN VEGAS - YES THAT IS TRUE, THE SUN DON'T LIKE ME TOO MUCH! YES I WOULD BE IN LOTS OF TROUBLE IF I LIVED OUT THERE! THATS WHY I GO TO VEGAS IN MARCH WHEN IT AIN'T TOO HOT THERE AND YOU COME HERE WHEN IT IS STILL COLD HERE!

Yooper in Vegas and Loo Loo Mae:

What's with using these pages for your personal messages, don't you two have regular e-mail?

By Bushman on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 11:43 am:

Dan & Linda, There are bears in most places in the U.P. If you keep your food inside and dont feed them they shouldent be a problem. They will come into town to feed out of the dumpsters. Just stay clear of them and they wont bother you.

By Ray E Gr, Mi on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 11:49 am:

Hi again. In yesterday's picture, Charlie mentioned that the hump that is Mt. Horace Greeley was barely visible. Where is it in the picture. Also is the hump to the left where the ski runs are? Also is there a hill called Mount Gratiot and where is it in relation to the picture. Hope to be up there yet this year with some "down southerners" and I'd better know what I'm talking about.

By rhlndr.wi on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 12:15 pm:

There are days when the cloud formations as seen by the Airport Webcam are just awesome. Today is one of those days.

By me on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 12:31 pm:

to thad... I agree

By AnotherMe on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

I have a feeling that 'YOOPER IN VEGAS' and 'LOO LOO MAE' may be the same physical person. There might be an AM/PM personality split, but its the same caps-locked keyboard!

By Dan & Linda IL on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

Thanks Bushman. just wanted to be sure, they where a problem in the "porkies" when we where there in 95. but when we stayed just outside of Marquette (Gitchee Gumee RV park)there where no bears at all (at least that we have seen or heard of) so I guess that means we will have to keep all food locked up tight.

By Kathy, Lansing on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:29 pm:

My thanks to everyone who took the time yesterday to read my long post . . . Do I get a prize for longest post of the day?

Thanks also for the news on Mel and Pastor Hart. I'm glad to know Pastor is still alive and well if not kicking (knees you know).

My daughter is very seriously considering college on the UP, and I know for a fact that once she gets up there as a student, it'll be nigh onto impossible to drag her home again for holidays. She's a Yooper at heart, I think, just like her Mom, though I think her first winter up there will be telling. If she's still hooked on the UP after that, she's da real ting Yooper fer shure, ya?

By Bill, CO on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:35 pm:

Somebody please help me! I wanna go to the UP so bad I can't stand it much longer! I'll tell ya what, If nobody will buy the whole state of Colorado for half a pasty, I'll give it to you for free if I can go on annual leave sooner!

When the people here ask about the UP, I tell them it was probably like Colorado in the fifties, before it was spoiled...

Three and a half more days to go. I feel like Steve McQueen in "the Great Escape" boucing my ball against the cooler wall!

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:38 pm:

Kathy,

I went to school at NMU in Marquette and just loved being there. Being so close to the wilderness, Presque Isle, all the things to do in Marquette. It was an awsome time I would recomend anyone take a serious look at Northern. Tech if they have a program for you also, but at NMU it's a large school with a small school feel. About 8000 students or so. Drop me an email if you want more info.

By Ms.Quilt/LP on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 01:39 pm:

What events do you all have going on the week of the 15th of August? Where do I get the best Pasty? Is there a place for visitors to dine in at Still Waters? What can you tell me regarding the Casinos at Baraga?

By LOO LOO MAE on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:08 pm:

ANOTHER ME - NO WE ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON, YOOPER IN VEGAS IS IN VEGAS OF COARSE AND I AM HERE IN CALUMET! I WOULD RATHER BE HERE ANYDAY OF THE YEAR!

By jim_greenville_mi on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:20 pm:

in agreement with your opinions. IT IS IRRITATING TO USE/READ CAPITAL LETTERS AND CONSIDERED TO BE SHOUTING LOUDLY THE STATEMENTS.

***hope we all continue to enjoy the other serious pasty cam related comments and da beautiful photos each c.c. day. :)

By YOOPER BEEN TO VEGAS on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

STOP THE PRESSES. HOPEFULLY, IT ISN'T TOO LATE TO GET A NEWS FLASH TO THE GAZETTE. "IT'S HOT IN LAS VEGAS IN AUGUST".

By a friend on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:47 pm:

Lighten up, folks.. .this is a site where we comment on
the daily photo and subject, meet people, learn about
the UP and its history, reminisce, and sometimes stay in
touch with those we love and miss.

By Suzanne/Tampa on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 02:50 pm:

The traffic has been awesome at the airport today. One has to wonder where everyone is coming and going. NW just left a bit ago with a number of people and there have been many small planes in and out too.

The photos are great. I'm new to the site so I did go back into the previous months and years. I've really enjoyed everyone's experiences.

God Bless Our Troops and bring them home soon. Let's work together to make a better place for our children and grandchildren to live.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

Did anyone take time out yet to vote for pictures for the 2005 calendar? It just might make your day!

By Bill, CO on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 03:13 pm:

Can you give me a "bug" update as to how bad they are?

By joeyooper on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

To Thad, me, another me, and Jim:
I agree 100%
Bill, the bugs depend on the weather. And you know how changeable the weather is in the U.P. Impossible to give a bug update.

By partime yooper on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 04:50 pm:

Bill...just don't let em bug ya!

By me too on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 05:14 pm:

Vicks should scare the bugs off. Get OFF with Deet!

By Yooper Willie on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 05:28 pm:

CRITTER CONDITIONS:

The "Do Nothing Right" claims one bear per square mile in the Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties. We too have been hit well inland in the Porkies, in spite of the packs being well up a tree ... Just too many careless campers before you.

Minimal skeeter's, just at morn and dawn, but the ankle biting flys were bad all yesterday afternoon in spite of the breeze.

Pack your woolies - predicting 53 for a low tomorrow.

By JJ MI on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 05:31 pm:

Garlic Pills - or lots of garlic will keep bugs away...

By Don Downstate on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 06:48 pm:

Try putting a sheet of Bounce softner in all of
your pockets. That will help keep some of the bugs
from bugging you while your trying to enjoy your
time off.

By pf on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:33 pm:

what are woolies, Yooper Willie?
(sorry, hope I didn't offend some folks for talking to
another person on here)

By Yooper Willie on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:51 pm:

pf

Woolies, long Johns, Doctor Dentons. We may have an early "colors" season - It's been a strange summer all over the mid-west.

By Marcy/Arizona on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:53 pm:

Hi everyone! I just would like to say I love this site, I have been checking in for awhile now and really love the photos and postings. It feels like one big family.I wrote in one time and I read the postings almost everyday. I consider myself a yooper, I have family in Eagle Harbor(the Koop`s and Black`s)and I spent every summer working at the Shoreline Resort, which was owned by my aunt and uncle(the Koop`s). They sold the resort a few years back but still live in the harbor and my father lives in the harbor as well.I would love to live in the UP but am in Arizona at the present time ( which I do not like)but, I really enjoy getting my UP fix! it helps me get through when I`m having a bad day. I sure envy everyone heading up that way! I also would like to comment on the photo today, I LOVE it! I am an equestrian and own horses here in Arizona and never thought I would see a photo of a horse show as the photo of the day. thank you! Have a good evening everyone.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:56 pm:

I see Jim Dreyer is pitting himself against Superior again. I heard on NPR that the lake temperature is 63 degrees. That's pretty toasty! I'm rootin' for Superior. Tonight's paper said he is 17 miles into his trip.

By been there/done that on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:57 pm:

A fashion note...for August in the UP...you bring shorts, t-shirts, sandals, sneakers, socks(not anklets), jeans, sweats (tops and bottoms), and a really warm jacket....or as the old saying used to be.....you should have been here yesterday, it
was summer!

Also, plan to change clothes as the weather changes by the hour...layering might work.

By Troll Diva, Ferndale on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:57 pm:

Mary Drew, last week I got an email from Don DaYampert, although it was from his email I had a gut feeling that it wasent really from him. I asked and sure enough he didnt send it. Seems that Pasty. com has had some email addys stolen.
:(

Good idea Troll Diva, if you aren't expecting an email from someone, it's best not to open it. Checking with the sender is another good idea. These nasty little worms and viruses have a way of getting into people's email boxes and stealing the addresses, then using them to pose as the sender and are a source to find recipient addresses too.
All Pasty.net users have the option of being protected by Pasty.net Spamstop. Since I've been using it, I haven't had one nasty virus or worm enter my inbox! Great protection...shameless plug!!

WHOOPS--- I forgot the DEET!

By Therese from just below the bridge on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 09:45 pm:

Beautiful photos! This is how I have to admire horses: remotely. I am terribly allergic to them and end up in hospital with asthma. No Mackinac island for me! I remember as a kid riding through a field in August on the back of a palomino quarter horse, the tall dry grass and wildflowers. maybe in Heaven I can ride again.

Say, "Toy Boat" five times as fast as you can!

By !,MI on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 11:29 pm:

This was a crazy tongue twister as a youngster.."Hoof hearted. Ice melted"

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 12:20 am:

We used to try to say, "One smart fella, he felt smart." "Two smart fellas, they felt smart." and so on and so on. How far can you get before it falls apart? :>) (Mimi never heard this one before. She only got to 3.) My apologies. ;>) TOY BOAT was a hard one. LEMON LINAMENT, too. SHE SELLS SEASHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE. Good Luck!

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 12:24 am:

Just thought of another old one:
"A skunk sat on a stump,
The stump thought that the skunk stunk,
The skunk thought that the stump stunk,
Who stunk? The skunk or the stump?"

Have fun with this one!
