Finally some wet conditions across the U.P. this morning, after quite a dry spell...

A rainbow is a fascinating sight. The kind that makes you stop whatever you're doing and gaze skyward, pondering if there really could be a 'pot of gold at the end of the rainbow'! Bob Gilreath and family, recently took a U.P. vacation and were treated to this double array. What makes up a rainbow, you might ask, so I've supplied a link for 'everything you've always wanted to know about rainbows, but were afraid to ask!' For a mini-U.P. vacation, click on Bob's name above and you'll be treated to a peek at his... maybe that's the 'pot of gold'! :->

The pot of gold is the Keweenaw. Doubt it? Just go there.

By maijaMI on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 07:48 am:

kosk: thanks for the compliment yesterday for supportive parents. As a newly retired middle-school counselor, I certainly know what you mean and whole heartedly agree. However, I also think that educators can never be praised enough. Because they do it every day, have their training and experience, they tend to underestimate their talents, abilities and impacts. I always believed that but learned it most vividly when due to cutbacks I was given a classroom teaching position after not having taught for 20+ years. (thank goodness for the kids a new counseling position opened!) Education now is so challenging--no one who hasn't done it can possibly understand. My greatest hope is that the current "it's the school's fault" thinking will turn around to true respect for teachers. (and I say that as a parent!)

Maija, Seattle: I was always called Maija from birth. When I went to kindergarten I had to learn that I was Mary. Have only recently been going back to Maija, so only family and a very few close friends are calling me that. I too really like being called Maija, and am so happy I chose that for my pasty name. I also had an uncle Eino!

re: beware of RAINBOW PICTURES

Our first trip to the Keweenaw we saw, and photographed, a double rainbow during prime colors week in October. Kept the picture up in the kitchen seeing it daily all winter, only to purchase land there the following spring.

The house is now completed and we're moving up lock, stock, and toto.

Thanks Dorothy.

Count me in with a few bucks for the Pasty.com lighthouse. It looks like a really nice one. I've never been to it personally but stop at every one I get a chance to, to take a picture.

If we keep the contributions in the $100 range, it will only take 5000 of us. That's about 1.75 hours per year as a timeshare!! Count me in. Any chance one of the beancounters could set this up as a 501c3 so we can deduct it? :)

Speaking of gold, yesterday's picture on the Gazette website was beautiful. Wasn't that Ernie K. floating off into the sunset? I wonder if he ever thinks of us back here in WA while he's up there building his retirement dreamhome? I heard they did some shuffling at the office Ernie - I think your desk is in the broom closet now.

Hey! that was Ernie K. floating off in the sunset! We here in Washington have been wondering about his whereabouts! He must be waiting for his rainbow pot-o-gold to come in! Yes, that desk did turn to a broom closet! We sold all his UP memorabilia (got a great price from an ol'yooper - I even saw a few tears dropping on his beaming smile when he left with the goods!)

What high school do you attend if you live in Bruce's Crossing? I'm trying to find Marilyn Pietila she graduated in 1987 and we lost tough after going through Air Force basic training together. If I know the name of her school, that may help.
Thanks!

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

Bill - If I thought I could sell the entire state of Colorado on Ebay for enough to buy the lighthouse i'd be worth half a pasty... But as thats not a sure thing, I'll keep my half!! :-)

However, I do like the 501c3, there were a couple of bean counters from yesterday weren't there! Then we could have it as a Pasty.com Lighthouse Preserve! Now that would be cool. I bet there aren't many web pages that own a lighthouse!

I was just in YAHOO and the Finance Question of the Day was:

WHAT IS THE LEAST CORRUPT COUNTRY IN THE WORLD?

THE ANSWER WAS..... FINLAND!!!!!!

IT DOESNT SURPRISE ME ONE BIT. VERY KIND PEOPLE!!!

By JustME on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

There are some other interesting facts about Finland that I've heard (not verified):

1. Most wired country in the world. Virtually 100% of the population has access to broadband internet connections.

2. One of a small number (<5) countries that has a 100% literacy rate (US is 97%).

3. This may have changed, but at one time it had the highest percentage of a single religion (Lutheran) of any country in the world. The quote I heard was "Finland has a higher percentage of Lutherans than Saudi Arabia does of Muslims".

By Maija in Seattle on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 02:42 pm:

JustME - I cannot corroborate your facts, but I would not be surprised if they are all correct.

Here's another interesting fact about Finland (which speaks well of its people): Finland is the ONLY country to have fully paid its post-World War I debt to the United States. And, as Yogi Berra said, "You can look it up" -- which I did.

By Erja, Central Ostrobothnia, Finland on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 03:54 pm:

Just came back home from Lapland. It's such a beautiful place to spend vacations, and actually it reminds me a little bit of UP. Nature is pretty much same kind of than UP's, except that we don't have those magnificent Great Lakes, only smaller one "great lakes" =)

I noticed that for the past few days here has been nice topics under discussion, like, what people are by their professions (I'm a student major in entrepreneurship and production economy) and ofcourse conversations about Finnish language (and how easy??? it's to learn) are always very interesting reading.

YooperFinn: Hei! I think it was on Sunday you asked about "sweetrolls", "pulla", "nisu", "nisupulla" and "nisuleipä". I’m not quite sure what "sweetroll" means, because my dictionary doesn’t know that word. Is that just a general term for different kinds of buns or is that proper noun for specific bun? But let see if I can help on this.

"pulla" = bun
"pitko" (sometimes called also as "pullapitko") = long wheat loaf, bun loaf
"korvapuusti" = one kind of rolled bun within butter, sugar and cinnamon (maybe same than sweetroll???), ("korvapuusti" also means "slap in the face")

"Pulla" is also a general term for different kinds of buns, so we can use word "pulla" if we talk about "pitko" or "korvapuusti". And "nisu" is synonym for "pulla", and sometimes (very rarely) people put those words together ("nisupulla"), but the meaning is still the same, "nisu" or "pulla".

However, "nisu" is very oldfashioned word and usually only older people use that, but in general hardly no one use that in these days Finland. For example, if we ask what is "nisu" from teenagers it is a pretty safe bet that they won’t know. And in a way, I think that’s sad, because also many other old words are vanishing from Finnish language and new slang words become more common.

"nisu" is made from wheat, but it doesn’t mean wheat
"vehnä" = wheat
"vehnänen" = someting "eatable" made from wheat, wheat bread, can also mean "nisu" and "pulla"
"leipä" = bread
"nisuleipä" = never heard anyone using that, but it’s understandable word, meaning bread made from wheat (oldfashioned)

I hope you figure out what I wrote (my English is not perfect so there could be some mistakes) and hope this will help you even a little bit, or maybe it just confuces you more...

And by the way, gorgeous pic today!

Angelflight is free air transportation in small aircraft for people who live in small towns and need treatment in large urban areas. It is free, based on your doctors info and need, and everything related to the transportation is donated by the pilot with his/her aircraft or access to aircraft. It makes for a real mission. As an aside, you meet nice people. We have one gal with a two year old blind daughter from Branson who I flew once and dropped off at a local airport, drove her to her apt adjacanet to the hospital as she was here for five days. I went home and told my wife about these two "camping" near the hospital and my wife made me go back and bring them to our home. They now stay with us twice a year regardless of who flies them. Kind of like Yooper hospitality. Nice people who need help should get it........and I get to fly real missions. Everybody wins. If you are a pilot who wants to help or a patient who needs a ride from Escanaba or whereever to Detroit or wherever, check out Angelflight.com

There is a company in Trenary that makes the Finnish squeaky cheese. Can't remember their name. The name starts with "I". We have bought it in Ishpeming and Negaunee and at Elmer's in Esky, but not lately down here in Esky. Never heard of pulla 'til the last few years. In the CC it was always nisu. Seems to me I read that there is a NOKIA plant in New Mexico that assembles the cell phones. When I was a kid, the Indian paintbrushes were also called the Devil's paintbrushes. Got home from AIRVENTURE 2004 last night. Love to see all those 'planes, old or new.
Very hot there, bright sunshine, but the spf 25 was up to the job. :>) Didn't get burned.

Can you imagine being able to have an AMBASSADOR pizza AND Vollwerth's sausage delivered all the way to California?? How great is this? ...brilliant!

For the best value online, order directly from
Vollwerth's, one of the longest running sponsors of Pasty Central, who helps to make this website possible.

My New York City Finnish born mother-in-law taught me to bake Pulla (pronounced: bulla) 22 years ago...We were very confused when we came to the UP and ate Nisu!

Where is the best now that Thurners is gone?

Juustoleipa means Bread Cheese. It is a buttery flavored baked cheese that has been produced in Finland and Sweden for over 200 years. The baking process forms a tasty crust similar to bread. To warm, place in microwave for 10-20 seconds. Serve with honey or jam, as a dessert, or with coffee.

American Spoon Foods in Petoskey (with shops elsewhere) sometimes sells squeaky cheese. Put a piece of it at the bottom of a hot cup of coffee, and when you reach the cheese and chew it it squeaks. You may be able to mail order it from them.

To: Erja, Central Ostrobothnia, Finland...
Your English is excellent. You write better English than most of us here do.

I read that schools in Finland teach English (among other languages)and the majority of Finnish people can speak English. Is this true?

A friend of mine gave me a quiz. She said "Which country has the lowest crime rate-- South Africa, Switzerland, Finland, Japan. She said it was Finland.

My hubby who is a WWII buff said Finland was the only country to pay back their war dept to the U.S. Doesn't surprise me at all!
