Can't look at this young poika without breaking into a grin :o) Capturing the sprightliness of youth is not something easily done, but it was by Michael Keranen (a good Finn name). According to Michael, this frisky fella forgot his tackle and his fishing rod. But on the shores of Lake Superior that doesn't matter. There are so many things to do - - just look at all those rocks to pick, skip or just plain throw in the lake, if only to see how far your arm can pitch it. Then of course with those wet socks and shoes you'll have to lie down on the sun-warmed rocks and check out the clouds in the sky. I could go on and on, but I'll give some other Pastycammers a chance to list favorite Lake Superior past-times.

Remember, only 8 more days until Pasty Fest 2004 makes its debut, with a free pasty for the first 400 to attend. Wait a minute, there's another past-time - - eating U.P. pasties by the Big Lake!

Long-neck bottles ground into the sand to keep cool in the water, fire and Vollwerth's, an innertube to bounce around on the waves, ripe wild blueberries to pick at Bete Gris with the wind off the lake to keep the flies down and the waves rolling.

RLL; It's been a while since I had more laughter in the morning than coffee! THAT was GREAT! Thank you! I REALLY needed that. I don't always find things to laugh about in the Morning, especially when it barely hits fifty degees in the house.

Love the big lake rock beach. Our cabin made it easy to go and pick thimbel berry's and blueberrys along the road. My favoriet was walking along the beach picking up driftwood so that night we could make a huge bon fire and roast potatos and corn on the cob right there in the firs. Then sometimes we would ge brave and go for a quick swim in the calm waters. The mesquitos is what I hated about it. I thought that the picture looked like it was taken by the inn there. The Jam Pot?

I used to see this Breath-taking view of Great Sand Bay, heading south on Lakeshore Drive, from the Harbor. Such a wonderful panoramic view of the shoreline and Bay... Maybe that is the Monastery you're wanting to know the name of? The Jam Pot, I think, is the name of it. Just a guess.

Good morn' from northwestern Il. This weekend down here is a-buzz with the Grand Excursion along the Mississippi. Steamboarts, reinactments, steam engine train, food and fun, music. If I can't live in the U.P. this is a great second!One of my favorite memories is sitting on the beach at Grand Marais, Mi. sketching and writing a poem of my love of The Lake.

That's the mouth of Eagle River I am pretty sure.
Natural casing hot dogs, cooked on a fire with a stick that your dad had to whittle to a pointand I am pretty sure the sand was considered a condiment back then. Stopping at Phoenix store for Orange Crush. Bonfires at Eagle River, my Aunt Doris making all of us kids smores as we did our best not to put someones eye out. Agate picking with my mom for hours. That wonderful shiver of exhaustion and cold as you lay down on your beach towel or blanket after you had swam as much as any fish, to try and stop shaking as the sun warmed you back up enough to go back in again. Beating everyone with the longest rock skip in history, you were quite sure. Seeing those Ore boats waaaaay out there on the horizon, can you see it? Then watching the most beautiful sunsets that came on that same horizon, knowing that surely this is gods country.
Finally, watching and enjoying all of these things with my own children now, and making those same memories with them. What parent can't smile softly when you hear them say "Let's go say hi to the Lake now mom."

The Big Lake.."Superior", is just that!!..none can compare, however, a close second is beautiful, Lake Michigan....rarely has a storm...just gentle breezes....no blackflies ( I don't know why)....here in Escanaba we have a great Yooper lifestyle but no thimbleberries..... Ya'all come on down south, ya hear??

What a fabulous picture! People around me rave about the Jersey shore, and Florida, and the Caribbean, and Hawaii, but somehow they don't impress me. Why sit on a boring expanse of sand and swim in salty water full of jellyfish? To me, a beach is a place to collect buckets full of beautifully tumbled Superior rocks, with a cool breeze blowing as you wade in even cooler water!

IS the Gay parade on the 3rd or 4th? And when are the fireworks at Cooper Harbor?

I moved away from the Keweenaw three months ago and now live on Lake Michigan. It's way too cold to even do that here! That kid is crazy. I hope his momma had a nice fire going for him. Is that the shoreline in Eagle River? Those red rocks look familiar.

Great picture today. It reminds me of our two daughters frolicking in the Hurricane River where it joins the big lake. We went there a lot in the 1970's, and two years ago returned with one daughter and two of our grandsons. The new generation is now equally in love with the lake and Grand Marais. Next year we plan to have the whole family there. It's wonderful, being able to show kids raised in New Jersey that there is actually a beautiful, quiet place that is not overrun with crowds of people.

I second that the pic looks like the mouth of the Gratiot. One of my very favorite places ever!

It is the mouth of the Gratiot. Copper Country Trout Unlimited nets there to survey for Coaster Brook Trout. They are volunteers for a Tech project. They are a great group of guys who have done stream inprovement projects on the Pilgrim River, etc, etc.

To UP_gal: Coming from Calumet, Sarkela Road is exactly one mile past the Tamarack Waterworks/Sedar Bay Y. Following Sedar Bay Road to the + Road where the road to the right (East) is called Cedar Hill which goes to Allouez/Bumbletown. Turning left (West) is Sarkela Road which then continues 1/8 mile (toward the Lake) to the Private Road, at which point Sarkela Road continues North (right) while Birch Lane goes South (left). Armour Sarkela's address--were he still with us--and for whom the road is no doubt named would, ironically, have a Birch Lane address.

There are a couple of recently named roads North off Sarkela Road leading to cottages/homes before you get to the Private Road designation noted above.

And of special interest, shortly after turning on Sarkela Road off Sedar Bay Road, you will see that the beavers have harvested numerous trees for their large beaver house on the left. What an amazing feat to haul all those trees across the road and across the pond to build their home!

Been a long time since I played in the Big Lake guess I've been away from up there too long. It Looks cold to me. Its a balmy 76 here in central Mossuri today. One thing no Blackflies or No-seeums or Deerflies and we have very few Mosquitos this year. You all enjoy the North County and I'll just sit here and enjoy all the wonderful pictures and remember what it was like when I was a Kid and lived up there.

Oh: Also forgot to mention my tomatoes are starting to ripen allready.

I see that all the Californian-Yoopers signed in yesterday...hello Kevin and Candy. I have missed signing in to Pasty central on a daily basis as the old computer is in the computer hospital hopefully getting healthy. I hadn't realized that the UP was having cold weather until yesterday when I spoke on the phone to a friend in Minneapolis. She said her son was vacationing on a houseboat somewhere in N. Minnesota and probably freezing. It hasn't been all that warm out here either.

The pictures and all the wonderful comments, great information is what makes this site great! I appreciated the info on the Finnish language yesterday too! I am always amazed at the knowledge that everyone shares.

I sell at a swapmeet here in Ventura. Often have people speaking a variety of languages. Although Spanish is prevalent, today I had a chance to use some German. A couple of weeks ago, tested a few Polish and Russian words. I sure wish I had learned Finn from my folks. They used Finnish to talk to each other when they didn't want us kids to know what they were talking about. You pick up a few words here and there, but certainly not enough to feel like you could speak the language in a meaningful way.

We used to do the CNE every year for vacation when we were Michiganders...(and I still am, no matter what my address) and loved it. But it has been many years. I think the last time was Expo 67! I can't believe I'm that old! And that was when I was in college! My, my. How time flies. ANYWAYS.....
Festival is always the first full weekend in October (Fri, Sat and Sun). 20 - 25 storytellers. They have Ghost stories on Saturday night and two cabarets, one Fri and one Sat from 10:30 - 12:00. These are over and above the price of the festival. I have an extra flyer with all tellers listed. If you want, I can put it in snail mail for you. Jonesborough is a little jewel of a town...nestled in the mountains of NE Tennessee. Around 2000 folks except for that weekend in October when it swells by about 8-10 thousand. Huge circus tents, terrific sound system, lots of room outside of tents for folks in lawn chairs and on blankets. You don't need tickets if you want to stay outside tents. But, good as the sound is, I would rather spring for the tickets, get really good seats and support the tellers. Anyways, I can't find enough good things to say about this. If I am lucky enough to be able to move back to Michigan and the UP, this is the one time of year I will surely go "down south"! Wonderful mix of people from all over, everyone friendly and pleasant. (kind of like a festival of Yoopers!) Let me know if you want me to send you the flyer. Otherwise just tell me what questions you need answered and I'll do my best. Have a great day. (anyone else interested, of course, the same applies, although the flyer may have to be just a copy.)

Being from Ahmeek, we spent many a summer day at the mouth of the Gratiot River !!! What great memories. May have to make a trek there next week when I'm up there for the 4th of July !!
