Over the last 2,306 days of the Pasty Cam, this little creature has played an important role: awakening your webmaster to publish a daily shot from the U.P. Even when other staffers prepare the picture of the day, it's still my priviledge to click the final button to make it visible. And for most of those days, Casey got me up and sat right here by my chair.
Last night we laid Casey to rest on our hillside in Eagle River above the dunes overlooking Lake Superior. Such a flood of memories - good times exploring the woods and shoreline - playing in the snow - jogging down Five Mile Point Road - a warm, furry companion who seemed to enjoy the sunsets as much as we do. Over the eight years of this website (more than half of her liftime) Casey didn't appear much in the pictures, but was mentioned often in the dialogue, like a familiar fixture. (For example, in Keewenaw Moon). Such an agreeable pup, she even made it to another first day of summer. Casey passed on as a result of an apparent stroke at age 15, which is about a century of dog years.
To all who have said goodbye to a favorite pet, you can appreciate our mixture of thankfulness and sorrow this morning. Our lives in the U.P. have been filled with more blessings than we can count. And among them, we count Casey.
Your weekday hostess Mary Drew will return tomorrow morning.
