Crowd at Hungarian Falls    ...scroll down to share comments

By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 05:41 am:

There have been a number of photos of the Hungarian Falls in Tamarack City, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a side shot of it like this one from Jeff Kalember. If you look closely at the people in the shot, it looks like each one is either taking or has just finished taking a picture of the steep falls, just out of the frame. Anyone who has visited those falls in person can vouch for the fact that it is a very picturesque cascade indeed. With all the bright new greenery abounding and the rocks warmed by the sun, it looks like a great place to "set a spell" and conjure up some dreams!

Speaking of dreams... you can make your Pasty dream come true on July 4th, and if you're one of the first 400 to attend the upcoming Pasty Fest 2004, you'll receive your dream pasty free... only 18 more days to go!

Pistons win – Governator invited to Pasty Fest 2004

(Calumet) – Governor Jennifer Granholm’s winning bet with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger assures that the Governator will be treated to a Michigan pasty and Vernors while wearing a Piston’s jersey. The good natured challenge between the two state executives would have meant a meal of In-N-Out burger for Granholm, if the Lakers had come out on top.

Main Street Calumet and Pasty Central have issued an invitation to Schwarzenegger’s office for the Governor to serve on the panel of judges at PASTY FEST 2004. The goal of the competition – held in Calumet on the Fourth of July - is to find the U.P.’s most delicious pasty. Reports indicate that the former movie star developed a taste for the regional favorite during his days as a student at UW-Superior.

No word yet from Sacramento regarding the Governors schedule on July 4th.

For more information about PASTY FEST 2004 see www.mainstreetcalumet.com or phone Main Street Calumet at 906-337-MAIN (337-6246).

By Kate, CA on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 09:36 am:

I'm a die hard Laker fan (Phil Jackson fan, actually)- not trying to sully the posts here, honest....But the Pistons completely outplayed them. They looked great on the court, so athletic and sharp. Congratulations to the team and their fans. I'm glad they finally got a coach who could spur them to victory. Maybe Pasty.net can team up with the Pistons. Can see the ads now. "Detroit Pistons - Pasty Powered"

(Don't forget the Toivo and Eino Sauce for Aaaaaaahhhhhhnold.)

By ed c on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 10:33 am:

Cant beat the memory of hand fishing for speckies in the Hungarian and stuffing them in a BUNNY BREAD wrapper...Kenny, Mac, Walley, Rock and Hookie can attest to this......

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 10:55 am:

Hey, I had some of that Toivo and Eino sauce the other day on my pasty, it was GREAT. Tastes great on burgers too....

By Connie, F.t Belvoir VA on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 11:25 am:

Yes, how do you get to the falls?
I heard that Mt. Baldy is private now and off limits, any truth to that??
16 days and counting....
Thanks

By cheryl mi on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 11:33 am:

I remember going to the falls when I was a little girl.It was beautiful then as it is now. Up above the falls lived a hermit. We used to like to go to his property line to peek at him. His dogs would start barking and the we'd run like the dickens. He'd come to town to get his groceries and carry them in a sack. He never bothered anyone but there was a mystic about him to us little kids. I can't remember his name off hand, does anyone else remember him?

By Troll, Lower MI on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 12:02 pm:

Ahhhh, my old swimming hole back in the early 60's.... what a refreshing dip especially when it was in the 80's and 90's. You got in and out real fast!!!

Cheryl, when were you a little girl?

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 12:36 pm:

Did our guys deliver last night or what?? Teamwork is a basic winning principal that the 2 Laker players needed to learn last night! Take note O'neil and Kobe!!!!

By the way, good morning from stormy Houston!

Roger---- a guy isn't supposed to ask a lady her age (LOL) but let's say it's many moons ago. Hint---I was in High School when President Kennedy was shot. How bout you Rog, what's your age? Hey, but my memory came back to me! The hermit's name was Runtamati.

By Jim, Arlington, tx. on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 04:46 pm:

"The Bluff" is what we called this part of Hungarian. Spent many days at Hungarian Falls in the mid 60's to 70's. It sure was a refreshing swim in the bluff or in the dam up stream after hiking up from the main falls down stream. The bluff was a little more secluded, and great to skinny dip when you didn't have your swim suit.

By maijaMI on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 04:57 pm:

So sorry to hear the Shoreline left Eagle Harbor. Is it for sale?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

To our Pasty Central regulars, you'll be happy to know this afternoon, at Governor Granholm's request, we shipped a half-dozen fresh frozen pasties to The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California. Included in the package was a bottle of Toivo & Eino's Really Secret Pasty Sauce, some Fudgy Pasties, a Pasty Pillow, a double extra large "I Love Pasties" T-shirt, a "Calumet Copper Country Metropolis " book, and a 2004 Pasty Cam Calendar. Also we inserted a formal invitation from Main Street Calumet asking the Governor if he'd be willing to serve as a Judge at "Pasty Fest 2004" in Calumet on July 4th.

I know the bet between the 2 Chief Executives was based on which basketball team won, but it looks to me like the real winner was the Governor himself!!

By sandstone princess on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 05:25 pm:

I am not a basketball fan, however I started to watch The Game about half way into the 3rd period. WOW Those Pistons were really great. I am truly glad that they won. You do not need big money and big names to have a great team. Looks like they worked hard together. I am now a Piston fan;-)

By Kim near Lansing on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 05:57 pm:

Wish I was the Governor, the day that package arrives!!

By CC Gal on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

Will there be any condiments for the pasties at Pasty Fest?

After 400 are given away, will there be more for purchasing?

Will Toivo be attending this event?

Do you need any volunteers?

By Roger -- Ishpeming on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 06:31 pm:

Thank you, Cheryl -- since I was in college [Wheaton College -- Illinois] during President Kennedy's shooting, it's okay -- I'm working on the decade following six [ref, my birthday greeting to Lois Hart on Monday].

I'd like to know more about this hermit -- I've often aspired to become one myself ... but my wife won't let me. Ha!

By Troll in Eagle Harbor on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 07:51 pm:

MARY LOU...The motel on the E.H.beach is the SHORELINE...I haven't heard when they will be opening for the season.I heard that a sale on the place is pending...I hope you enjoy your cruise and I'm sorry I can't be of much help.

By Charlie Edwards, Saginaw on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 08:20 pm:

Your picture of the "Hungarian Falls" posted on June 16 is up stream approx. 100 yards or so from the true Hungarian Falls. Although it could be considered part of the Hungarian Falls system it was typically known as the "Bluff" when I was growing up in Tamarack Mills and swimming there as a teen in the 50's. I still visit there every summer and enjoy it as much as ever.

By HN from St. Johns on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 09:07 pm:

Shelly from Texas:
You asked me a week or so ago if Uncle John's Cider MIll was open yet. We went by there today on our way back from the Copper Country, and yes it is.

By Patt - Mid - Michigan on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 09:21 pm:

Hey Charlie!! Was wondering if we can cheat and get in line twice for those pasties at Pasty Fest?(snicker, snicker)

I just got the word from work that we will be closed the Monday after the 4th so this troll wanna-be is heading up that weekend to visit the son who is taking some field classes at Tech this summer. Get to kill 2 birds with one stone that way. Mom gets to see the son she misses AND get the wonderful pasties you guys make.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 09:24 pm:

To Just Wondering: I am sorry if I ruffled your feathers. I was just having a little fun. Sometimes it feels good to wake up on the right side of the bed!

But then again who cares, Yes I did dance an Irish Jig!

I KNEW BILL RANTAMAKI & WAS SURPRISED YOU CONSIDERED HIM A HERMIT BECAUSE I BELIEVE HE WAS VERY SOCIABLE. HE WAS QUITE THE CONVERSATIONALIST & I REMEMBER THIS STORY HE TOLD, I DON,T KNOW HOW TRUE IT IS , I PASS IT ON FOR YOUR INFO. HE CLAIMS ,ONE OF THE LOCAL MINING CO. DROPPED OFF A MINER, WHO GOT KILLED IN THE MINE, PLACING HIM IN THE SHED OF THE WIDOW.!!!

By UPfriend on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 10:41 pm:

Charlie, will you keep us posted on Arnold's response
to the Michigan pasty package?

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 11:19 pm:

Hei, Charlie Edwards, it is a looonng time since we swam at the Hungarian Dam and the Bluff. Aren't these falls the ones we called the Mama Falls? Was in May of '56 or '57, Don Michelson (from Elo.) and I were crossing that big rock that angles down to the water. (There was ice around the edges yet.) He fell in and I've never seen anyone swim SO fast across that pool. :>) 'Course, not to be out done, I had to jump in, too. Man, it was COLD.

Yes, we use to call it the Bluff when we were kids. I lived a house away from your family and your sister Joyce was a good friend of mine while we lived in Tamarack/Hubbell. Good memories. Now I'm a troll!

By rwa, Keller TX on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 12:28 pm:

Ahh, the Bluff...brings back many memories..spent hours playing in that area as a kid growing up on Tamarack Hill...Dad always told a story about nearly drowning there as a kid. Only 6 days to go before we get back to our log cabin in Freda...can't wait!

By Charles Edwards on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 09:15 pm:

Hello sdc. Can't figure out who you are. Joyce lives in Marquette now. Is married and one daughter.

I don't think you'd remember us as you were not living at home the time we lived there. We moved back to Detroit in 1965. I did hook up briefly with Joyce on this site after almost 40 years, gulp, I feel oooollllddd....
