By
Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 05:40 am:

Here in the U.P. the northernmost county is Keweenaw, and for those of you unfamiliar with the area, this county reaches almost to the shores of Canada. Of course I'm talking about Isle Royale National Park, which is part of Keweenaw County, but about 42 miles out in Lake Superior (if you leave from Eagle Harbor that is!). Dan VanWasshenova snapped a shot looking out towards distant Thunder Bay, which is actually about 18 miles from the Island. Looks like Dan and friend took an early trip to the Park, to enjoy hiking and camping before the busy summer season starts. Not too much longer and I'll be over there capturing a few scenic sights myself... can't wait!

Morning all! What a gorgeous picture.

By Bob Fartas, MI on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 06:22 am:

I'm leaving for Copper Harbor saturday morning to go to Isle Royale. Ninety five percent of the time people will ask me "where's Isle Royale?" These are Michigan people, mind you. At first I will be amazed by their lack of knowledge of their own state geography, but then I suddenly come to my senses and realize that it's the widespread lack of awareness of Isle Royale that makes it the least visited National Park. In other words, it is nice.

Copper Harbor
Well, Here's the Harbor the day before our rains started. Looks like we have a good week ahead of us weatherwise, Sure would be nice!! Here's a view from the 'Lookout', I spent many hours here during my 2 summers tending bar at the old "Last Frontier Bar". Wonder if Dan and his friend left for Isle Royale from here, the Isle Royale Queen is moored at the dock.

By Andytofu Sedar Bay on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 07:21 am:

As a very recent transplant to the UP (Sedar Bay), I'm slowly beginning to forget the "City Lights" and "ANY TIME" shopping hours; and am especially enjoying magnificent sunsets over Lake Superior. I look forward to all interesting/fun stuff the Keweenaw has to offer, including the four seasons which I have yet to experience. It's fun to view UP photos on Pasty.net as well as comments by Yoopers (current, displaced, and wannabees). To all, best wishes and welcome to the UP whenever you can make it up here! We welcome you all. Just watch out for the drivers who don't signal and turn right in front of you and then drive 20 miles an hour! EEK!

"its borders" and "its northern" are possessive and do not take an apostrophe.

To Andytofu: when you live here long enough, you won't need turn signals either. In a small town, everyone knows where you're going!

Maybe someone from IRNP can verify this, but I believe that the Park, FOR ITS SIZE, has the most visitors of all the National Parks. Read that somewhere--maybe in the park's Management Plan.

I love the beautiful pics this morning....oh how I wish I was there. I'm thinking a trip to the CC this summer may have to be in the cards. Even if I can only make it for a night or two. Thanks for posting these today!

By UP_gal on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 09:01 am:

Manners count also, if you "read me"

By rob in dc on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 09:20 am:

Brent, I looked it up in my Webster's. The word you want is "pedantic". As I am an editor by trade and inclination, you can't insult me by hurling either word in my direction. Do permit me to suggest, however, that any criticism of Mary and the other Pasty Camers be delivered directly to them, and not via this board. Manners matter.

By Bob on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 09:28 am:

2 summers ago we camped around Lake superior

One of our best days was at sleeping giant
in Canada, we biked 6 k to the head, climbed
2 k up and back down and then 6 k bike back.

And I swear the 6k bike ride was uphill both ways!

I think that is sleeping giant in the background
of the picture.

Bob

I agree Dave- Part of the joy of this site is the friendly discussions, I'd hate to worry that every little thing I type is being critiqued. I know there are alot of people out there that are ten times smarter than me for sure!

To rob in dc:
Brent is correct.
PedŽant
n. 1. A schoolmaster; a pedagogue.
A pedant that keeps a school i'th' church.
2. One who puts on an air of learning; one who makes a vain display of learning; a pretender to superior knowledge.
A scholar, yet surely no pedant, was he.

You can't always address the person because they do not leave an e-mail address.

By ts on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 10:31 am:

the only time people speed up between calumet and hancock is when they get on the 4 lanes so you cant pass them unless you go 80--then they slow down again when its back to 2 lanes

By UP_gal on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 10:36 am:

I think there are only about 6 people in the CC who use turn signals and they never make that turn they are signaling for. It just blinks mile after mile. I guess you have to remember if "Eino" is going to "Rudy's" farm up da road. The beauty of it is...no-body ever gets a ticket for it.

By Roudy on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 10:36 am:

Heikki and Uno use to work at the old smelter in Hubbell. Neither could tell time ,but Heikki had a watch. At least once a day Uno would ask "Wat is da dime". Heikki would pull out that ol' pocket watch, open it up with great flare and he and Uno would look at it. Heikki would say "Der se iss";Uno would say "Dang if se ain't"
Then one day they notice it's not running,so they took the back off. Inside there was a dead bug. Heikki said "Well no wonner iss not running da eingonear iss deat"!
Hope the language passes inspection.Tank you please.

To Bob Fartas, re: 'where's Isle Royale' from Michigan(d)ers...I remember hearing about some comment made about my adoptive state of Illinois that some were unaware that the Mississippi River borders the state's west edge! For some one who's hobby is maps and geography in general, I cringe to hear such ignorance!

By Pat Mich on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 10:55 am:

This is a "fun" site. I don't think the grammar and spelling corrections are too much. We all have the opportunity to learn from them. Just don't get too "picky".

By UP_gal on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 10:57 am:

It is suprising how many folks do not even know that the UP is part of Michigan. I have dealt with merchants and suppliers who are adamant that the UP is part of Canada or Wisconsin. I have even seen maps, online, which round off the UP entirely. You just want to ask them if they have ever seen Wisconsin's Lake Superior shoreline ?

Watch out for the 6 foot tall mosquitos now featured on the copperharbor.org cam. That should scare the tourists.

By Wishful English Teacher on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

If Brent wanted to be correct, he should have said "Don't be 'a' pedant". Pedant is a noun, requiring the use of 'a' or 'the'. I am now being 'pedantic', which is a descriptive adjective, as Rob in DC knew the correct usage of, and the way Brent used it whether he intended to/knew it or not.

Pendantic - adj - Characterized by a narrow, often ostentatious concern for book learning and formal rules: a pedantic attention to details.

Neither a Pedant person nor Pedantic qualities are necessary on this site.

I drive to Hancock every A.M.--I know what you mean by people speeding up in the 4 lane so you can't pass and you have to go 80 miles per hour and the cops are parked on the side hiding out to catch those of us going 80 mph. I also know about the people who pull out in front of you and then go 20 mph and the people who pull out in front of you and turn 20 seconds later and the people who drive in the fog w/ no headlights on and the people who drive for 8 miles w/ a blinker light on so you never know when they are actually going to turn and I could go on and on!!:)

By PK, Wisconsin on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

As long as we're discussing grammar, punctuation, etc
today: please note that the spelling for the Copper Harbor
cam site is incorrect. It should be copperharbor.org, not
copperharber.org. This is one case where spelling is very
important.

Note taken...spelling corrected, but only because it's a link!

Regarding crazy drivers. I find it hilarious that you can be driving down a freeway (those of you "up north" will have to get to one to test this out) and someone will be in the fast lane going slower than you would like to. If tailgating to get them to move over isn't your thing then you may decide to pass on the right. Once they see you are passing on the right they will immediately locate the accelerator and go as fast or faster than you. Amazing... :) (Note: I don't endorse tailgating.)

Traffic problems? Try Houston. I live about 13 miles from where I work, and it takes me over 45 minutes to get there! No-one uses blinkers, they pass on the right, or left, run red lights, tailgate, cut you off without warning, its usually bumper to bumper all the way. 20mph is fast compared to the crawling we do.

One thing I want to do when I come home in a couple of weeks is drive Route 2 on the way to Manistique. It is such a pretty drive, even if you do have to wait forever to pass Granpa Jones in his Rv hauling his boat!!!! :)

Here's what I tell my third graders about those confounded apostrophes--use them in possessives (except its--not it's) and use them in contractions. There are exceptions to this, of course, but it is a basic rule, and prevents the apostrophization (my own word for you pedants out there) of all plurals that is so common on those outdoor message boards.

So we gotta say good-bye....for the summer.

What the heck is everyone talking about today? I do not know what a predimone or whatever they said (2 lazy to go back and ck proper spelling) even is. I do like proper grammar though and cannot stand all the double negatives that people speak with around here. Nice pics today. Thanks.

Love that evening light seen this time of day on the
Bridge Cam. Is there a Midsummer Fest in the UP?
You'd think so... baseball at midnight, bonfires, jolly little
tompten....

Too far away, no mere clay or royal ceremony, a war afoot.

It was easy to decipher our top poet today, Mr. Wheatman.

This all must have something to do with the fact that there will be a full moon tomorrow! By the way Dan, nice shot! Was this taken on Mount Ojibway?

The sad thing about today's banter is that I have to double-check each message to see if it's a palindrome!

I realize it's late, and most everyone will have turned in for the night, but I must comment on the photo for today. When I saw it, before reading the post I thought it certainly looked like Isle Royale. Sure enough, it is. My son Jeff and I hiked the length of it on the Minong Trail last year. That was on my list of things to do before I turn 50 (everyone should have a list like that). In every shelter we stayed at, I carved something in the rafters. Yes, I defaced government property. Dav S of Madison WI, go and see it, go hike it! It is wonderful, grueling, but wonderful!
I thought I knew who Wheatman was, and if I ever bump into who I suspect he is, I'll ask him, but the South End has me confused. South End of the UP or the Copper Country? Inquiring minds want to know. Others want to know, too. If indeed it is who I think, I danced with him at last years hunters ball.....

Dave S - Same problem here. I pop a Zantac, or one of its relatives, a hour, or so, beforehand. Better living through chemistry.

To Pat Mich,

We know a Pat Mich in Kenosha. That wouldn't happen to be you, would it?

Well, it's only 8:30 here, but I'm sure everyone has already closed their computer for the night in the best place on earth. Cliffdweller-- if you are awake, email me. It was a beautiful day here in the East Bay.

After reading, remembered this (for the german yoopers whose existence I assume with "Haus", "Fest" etc. around): Ein Neger mit Gazelle zagt im Regen nie!
