Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 07:10 am:

Forging a new friendship in the Keweenaw, as well as anywhere else, usually involves some type of food. This photo from Brian Rendel, illustrates that point quite well. It does make me wonder though, who's the braver subject, the feeder or the feedee? Myself, I'd probably be a bit nervous that this little fellow might take a nip out of my hand, instead of just nibbling on what I'm holding! Speaking of forging friendships with food, don't forget to plan on attending Pasty Fest 2004, on July 4th. If you're one of the first 400 attending, you'll get a free Pasty Central Pasty!

Good Morning from Ferndale, Michigan. Another great, dry (!) and sunny morning.

By James-Il on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 08:11 am:

Good morning. I had a friend, Tom Mueller, who use to feed a chipmunk at his house in Calumet. He had it trained to go into his shirt pocket for food. Tom's gone now and I miss him alot. I suppose the chipmunk does as well.

I finely completed my move from Los Gatos, Ca to Joliet, Il. I am looking forward to getting back to the U.P. for a visit after 23 years. We have missed our home in Eagle River and often think of the good times we had there. I'm sure many things have changed in the area but it will be good to see it again. I have enjoyed this site as well as others with U.P. information. I really like looking at the photos in the guest gallery as well. I hope to get some new photos in mine now that I am closer. All of mine are from the 70's & 80's. Maybe I'll even get to meet some of the folks that I see on this site every day and share a cup of coffee. Thanks for the great site and photos everyone.

By tc, mich on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 08:19 am:

Used to have a squirrel in the neighborhood who, when I was on hands and knees pulling weeds, would run up my back onto my shoulder and beg for a handout. He was about twice the size of other squirrels, so I assume he had been someone's pet and with good feeding had achieved maximum squirrel potential. I miss those semi-tame creatures down in the city. Here they are more shy of approaching.

By Gerry..Mi on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 08:42 am:

Chipmunks...cute little creatures! However I'm constantly chasing them away from the Orioles oranges.
Have a Great day and safe Memorial weekend.

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 08:48 am:

I lost the battle to chipmunks last year. They ate all my tomatoes. Will plant flowers this year instead.

By J.P. on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

Chipmunks have decent table manners too. At the bird feeder they a seed at a time and dont stay too long. Unlike their larger cousins.

By Yooper, MI on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

My grandparents who live in Osceola used to have a pet chippie that used to run up to the top of their porch steps to eat peanuts that they placed their every morning, but one morning little chippie never visited, come to find out they had a pail of water near their steps, little chippie had fallen in the pail and drowned, it was really devastating for them to find little chippie had drowned.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

What's your plans for Memorial Weekend? Don't forget to take a moment or more to pray for the men and women in the military, and thier families. It just takes a moment to bow your head, and ask for protection. While we are making choices and plans, they are serving.

By Ray H Martin on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 02:39 pm:

Hey Kokomo Ind. $Bay.....That was a tremdous website on Hockey history. Loved it. Especially because $Bay was so prominent through out. I didnt come from there , but my Dad Ray Martin was born there in 1905, and was raised in the good old coppeer country. If you have any more history of the area.Let me know. My Dads sister lived there until in the 1960tys. Her name was Inga and she had a big family of boys and girls . Her married name was Inga Clements. Her husbands name was Sy. Most of her kids are in there sixties or seventies as I am . Take Care Ray.

By Denny Illinois on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 02:54 pm:

Just got back from Ottawa National Forest. Rain Rain Rain - 6 days straight. The little black flies are out but no mosquitos yet. Weather has been to cool - 30's at night and 50's during the day.

By $Bay, Kokomo, IN on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

Ray H Martin, the Home Page for Pasty Net has a link or two for History (i.e. Copper Range Railroad) that you may find interesting....Best Regards, Glad you enjoyed it.

By Uno, Bruce's Crossing on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

Hey Wisconsin Bachelor, is the bar/res/party store open? Maybe CJ will take you to the Gay bar, have one for us! Is CJ still with Jane?

By Judy Chesaning MI on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 04:27 pm:

Theresa in Colorado... not sure how many Judy's there are here from MI, but I am one of them. Rivers are still flooding, farm fields are filled with ponds, but the level of the Great Lakes is going up! More rain predicted.

By Wannabe Yooper on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 04:37 pm:

As a child, I used to feed a "pet" chippie during summer vacation at my grandparents' home in Eagle River, MI....

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 04:39 pm:

To Dave, In Laurium... I had thought about doing that, but also thought people would think I was nuts. Did you really have one for breakfast, and do people do that? I could eat these things until the cows come home!

P.S. We don't have cows! :)

Hey Fran... We're waitin' on ya!

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 04:57 pm:

Alex T. ..A meal is a meal, who's to say you 'have ' to eat bacon and eggs for breakfast, I didn't feel bad about eating the pasty that early, only because it blew my diet for the day. If you feel guilty about eating it for breakfast, just call it 'brunch'....works for me!! Oh, weatherman says frost tonight, cover what needs to be covered... weekend looks pretty good, could be a bit warmer but at least the sun will be out!! sm

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 05:00 pm:

Ray Martin,I knew your sisters' family. You wrote a message on here previously and I didn't remember any Martins so I asked my oldest brother and he said he did.I came from a large family and all of us went to school with one or the other of Ingas'kids.Inga used to make bread and my husband used to buy it from her. He was single at the time.I always loved that house. When it was made into apartments I babysat there a few times. It had alot of nice details. My sister lives right across from it. I think my Dad and Sy used to work together at one time.

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 05:07 pm:

Alex, shoot I can eat pasties anytime -cold or hot!!!

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 05:44 pm:

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 07:42 pm:

To Andrew, Il - your posting on May 26
Looking back thru my rearview mirror, I saw a place of refuge.. This is the Copper Country. From far away places, people have come, bringing with them a diversity of mores. They have blended into a unique community of friendship and goodwill. This is indeed a blessed spot, a haven of nurturing for the body as well as a repose for the spirit. Truly a place apart. If one can enjoy such a piece of heaven on earth, this woould be the Coopper Country.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

Sorry! this would be the Copper Country. (I really do know how to spell)

By Dave, Laurium on Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 08:15 pm:

Haven't had a Heikki and Toivo joke for a while so here one is:
Toivo was applying for a job as a switch operator at the railroad.
The chief engineer conducting the interview says, "OK, Heikki, what would you do if the Northern Express carrying explosives was heading north on Track 1 and the Southern Central carrying gasoline was heading south on Track 1 and they were going to meet in 5 minutes?"
Toivo quickly answered, "I'd call my friend Heikki."
The chief engineer says. "Oh, do you think your friend Heikki would be able to help you?"
Toivo says, "No, my friend Heikki really likes explosions!!" sm

Big glass of cold Buttermilk and hot Pasty was the way the Oldtimers used to do it.Pasty in the morning better then a hash omelet.

By up on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 08:54 am:

This doesn't really pertain to Mary Drew, but as the song says "Oh lazy Mary will you get up, will you get up today!"
We certainly know that Mary D. is not lazy!

By Charlie Hopper, whoops on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 08:54 am:

Good morning from the Houghton County Airport, where I left my laptop last night in a locked office, and thus not able to upload the daily update. Mary had everything ready to go, the delay is entirely your webmaster's fault.

Stay tuned. Friday will officially get under way in about 20 minutes.

By Patti on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 09:35 am:

db - please don't upload anything to entertain us. It isn't necessary. It would distract from the original intention and purpose of this site. Beautiful pictures, and snapshots of life in the UP. That's all that's needed here....no cutsie jokes, cartoons, etc. Just pure UP life. :) Thanks,
